Be Careful Where You Buy A Black German Shepherd From

Kraftwerk K9 German Shepherd Black & Red Gentle Giant!

Unfortunately, many black German Shepherd breeders are just in it for the money since they can charge so much for them.

This means that they put less care into raising them and do not pay as much attention to the dogs health.

This is why you should make sure that you are buying from a reputable breeder since health issues later in the dogs life can be expensive or more expensive than the dog themselves.

To make sure you have found a reputable breeder, be sure to ask for the puppies parentage and family history.

This will ensure the pup will be healthy and has been cared for properly.

Another easy way to find a good breeder is to look at breeders registered with the American Kennel Club.

West German Working Line German Shepherds

The West German Working line rarely has saddle markings. These Shepherds come in a black sable color scheme. This color has black areas, while some areas may have a hint of white and grey.

The grey and white markings will usually be around the muzzle, legs, chest, and tail area.

West German Working line German Shepherds are also available in black and tan or black and bi-colors. However, these colors are rare in this bloodline.

What Colors Do German Shepherds Come In

The most common colors are black and tan, black and red, black and cream, or black and silver. These colors cover the dog in one of these three patterns:

  • Saddleback the black overlays the dog’s back and sides . The rest of the dog is tan, red, cream, or silver. Usually there’s some black on the face, as well.
  • Blanketback the black extends further down the shoulders and hips.
  • Bicolor like a Doberman or Rottweiler, which is mostly black with small tan/red/cream markings specifically confined to the head, chest, and legs. Honestly I don’t know why this pattern is called bicolor, which simply means two colors. As we’ve just seen, the other two patterns also have just two colors.

Another common color is sable, which is an overall shade of gray, golden, or red, with black-tipped hairs that create a “dusted with black” effect.

A less common, but perfectly acceptable, color is solid black.

“Faulty” colors

Then there are two controversial colors: blue and liver:

  • Blue German Shepherds have inherited a color-modifying gene that changes their black pigment to smoky gray. Many blue dogs look as though they’ve been dusted with flour.
  • Liver German Shepherds have inherited a color-modifying gene that changes their black pigment to brown .

Blue and liver are considered serious faults by the official German Shepherd clubs and breeders who show their dogs in the conformation ring. But you can still register these dogs and compete with them in activities such as obedience and agility.

Red Sable German Shepherd

Puppy German Shepherd 8 Weeks

The red sable German Shepherd color is another variation on their sable coat which is due to the dominant agouti gene.

These genes however are not diluted like in the gray Shepherd, in this coat, a deep reddish-brown replaces the usual tan in the sable pattern.

This coat coloration has intermingling of red and black over most areas of their body.

Red German Shepherds are robust and healthy dogs that are energetic and active. They are highly intelligent, which makes them easy to train, and they form strong bonds with their families. While they are devoted and affectionate with their owners, they can be wary of other dogs and strangers.

Red German Shepherds are on the expensive side, so you can expect to pay about $2,500 to $4,000 or more from a breeder. If you decide to get a puppy from a breeder, be sure they are responsible by meeting them and asking questions. You can also ask to speak to previous puppy owners for their thoughts on the breeder and their Red German Shepherds.

Adoption can be another option that you could consider. But keep in mind that trying to find a Red German Shepherd might be more of a challenge, particularly if you have your heart set on a puppy.

However, German Shepherds are common dogs, and if you find one through your local shelter or animal rescue group, youll be paying a fraction of the price of a breeder , and youll be giving a dog a second chance at a happier and better life.

Are German Shepherd Coat Colors Seasonal

A German Shepherds permanent coat coloring and markings happen on average around the age of two.

A German Shepherds color isnt seasonal, but their coats are.

German Shepherds shed their coat multiple times per year on average. Dogs that live outdoors blow their coat at least twice per year.

German Shepherds that mostly live indoors may only shed their coat once a year. However, indoor Shepherds may shed moderately all year round.

Theres a difference between a summer and winter coat. In the winter, your Shepherd will shed their summer coat and grow thicker and darker fur.

In the summer, your Shepherds coat will become lighter and shorter. This change will be even more prominent for German Shepherds that live outdoors.

Training Goal #: Begin Obedience Training

The German Shepherd Dogs work ethic is legendary, and you can encourage your dogs best working traits with early and ongoing training. GSDs excel at obedience, so begin teaching your puppy basic commands like sit, down, and stay, as well as loose-leash walking, from an early age. Enrolling in a puppy obedience class can be extremely helpful both for teaching these commands as well as socialization, and its not too early to begin thinking about CGC training as well.

Are German Shepherds Easy To Train

Kraftwerk K9 German Shepherd dog Very Large, black & red with a tremendous head!

Some are easy to train, while others are more moderate.

As we’ve seen, different lines have different temperaments. German Shepherds from working lines are typically more assertive and stronger-willed. A “tougher” German Shepherd will be more challenging to train unless you pay closer attention to building the right Leader-Follower relationship with the dog.

That doesn’t mean “softer” German Shepherds are automatically easy to train. Some dogs with soft temperaments are skittish or shy, making them just as challenging as a strong-tempered dog.

In general, though, a sound-tempered German Shepherd who is a good fit for family life should be easy to train. Just establish the right Leader-Follower relationship and the dog will be happy to work with you.

This is taught in my puppy training book, Respect Training For Puppies .

Training Goal #: Socialization

Puppies of all breeds have a critical socialization window that closes at 12 to 16 weeks of life, and your GSD puppy is no exception. In fact, for GSDs, who by nature are protective guardians, socialization is extra important so that your puppy learns which strangers are friendly and not a threat.

GSDs are very observant, and your puppy will pick up on your cues and reactions around new people and new situations. During this critical period, having exposure to many different kinds of people in non-threatening situations will help your puppy be confident among friendly strangers rather than fearful or aggressive. And even during times of social and physical distancing, you can still socialize your puppy safely.

Proper socialization cannot be overemphasized for this breed as Adams notes, The foundation for most training is confidence. It is critical that the GSD puppy is well socialized from an early age onward. Safely exposing the puppy to new sights, sounds, and smells is absolutely critical for development. Good socialization translates to confidence.

Certified dog trainer and CGC evaluator Jacqui Foster, CPDT-KA, echoes this sentiment: I tend to lean more towards developing self-confidence in the puppy. For this I recommend short, fun, three-minute games that engage the puppy with the owner as well as in noises, weird and uneven surfaces, family members, etc., throughout the day. A confident puppy is a happy puppy.

Children And Other Pets

If they’re well-trained and have had plenty of exposure to kids, especially as a puppy, a German Shepherd is a great companion for children. In fact, some say they’re a cross between a babysitter and a cop, both gentle with, and protective of, the children in their family.

This is a big dog, though, capable of mistakenly bumping a toddler or small child. True to their reserved nature, they’re not tail-wagging friendly with kids they don’t know, but they’re generally trustworthy.

The German Shepherd can also live peacefully with other dogs and pets, as long as they’re taught to do so from puppyhood. Introducing an adult German Shepherd to a household with other pets can be more difficult if the dog isn’t used to getting along with other dogs or cats. You may need to hire a professional trainer to help, or get advice from the rescue organization if that’s where you acquired the adult German Shepherd.

How Much Exercise Do German Shepherds Need

German Shepherd puppies and adolescents should have moderate exercise only multiple walks, fetch games, or playing with another dog.

But the growing bones and ligaments in a young dog can be irreparably damaged by too much exercise or the wrong kind of exercise. At this age, there should be no forced running . Restrict jumping as much as possible.

Once the dog is mature, the amount of exercise needed will vary according to the dog’s energy level. But all German Shepherds, to maintain fitness, need brisk walking every day and all-out running in a safe, enclosed area as often as possible.

Dogs from working lines typically want a lot more exercise.

Mental exercise is even more important for German Shepherds. Mental exercise means the dog gets to participate in interesting activities that keep his intelligent mind stimulated.

This might be a dog sport such as agility, rally obedience, musical freestyle, tracking, flyball, herding, or schutzhund. It might be interactive dog toys, or a homemade obstacle course, or learning tricks, or playing games such as Hide ‘n Seek.

Some of these activities are included in my training book, Teach Your Dog 100 English Words.

Black German Shepherds Have Some Physical Differences

Black German Shepherds can often be larger than the standard variety.

They also can have a straighter back.

Lastly, they usually have a thicker coat, especially at the back of the neck, between the front and back legs, and near the ears and tail.

Despite these physical differences, they also have lots of similarities to the standard species.

Some similarities include a strong build, erect ears, a fluffy tail, a double coat, and lastly, they are both heavy shedders.

What Colors Would The Parents Have To Be To Produce A Black German Shepherd

If you are hoping for a black German Shepherd or just curious, it is important to know what color the parents have to be to birth a black puppy that grows up with the same color.

The most likely combination is to have both of the parents be a solid black.

This will give you the highest chance of having an all-black German Shepherd.

One other way to get a black German Shepherd is for both parents to be black and tan or have one parent black and the other black and tan.

While these two are less likely to result in a black puppy, there is still a chance.

If both parents have a solid black color recessive gene, then your pup will be born black and stay black.

Black & Tan German Shepherd

This color combination is the bread and butter, so to speak, of the German Shepherd. For most people, when they picture this breed, its with this color. But even with this common color, there is plenty of room for variation.

The tan fur can range from deeper hues to a shade that almost approaches silver along the edges. The black color usually appears as a saddle-like pattern along the back and can vary quite a bit in size.

Something to keep in mind is that GSDs born with this pattern usually begin life darker and slowly lighten as they mature. The best way to get an idea of how a pups coat will develop in adulthood is to meet the parents .

Darker, especially black, coloration is recessive in the German Shepherd. So if both the parents display the black and tan coloring, then the pup is more likely to as well.

The black and silver German Shepherd is another common color combination. Even though they look more exotic than your average GSD, breeders still breed them, as theyve been growing in popularity.

Most of the time, color distribution may vary from dog to dog. However, they will typically have a silver base on the bottom of their body and black on the top half on their body.

The hue of black can range from a dark gray to a deep black. In some instances, the German Shepherd may have silver with multiple shades of black on the coat.

These dogs are truly spectacular in terms of appearance, and its not difficult to see why theyve been more prevalent among families in the United States .

German Shepherds Come In A Variety Of Colors

Like many other breeds, German Shepherd dogs come in a wide variety of coats and colors. However, some colors are not accepted by major kennel clubs and are thus considered faults. Many prospective owners prefer a nice coat and unique color on their dog. While selecting a puppy, however, one should also know which coat colors are accepted by major kennels and which meet the breed standards.

German Shepherd dogs are intelligent, courageous, and devoted. This is what makes them one of the most highly sought after breeds in the world.

Black And Tan German Shepherd

The most common coat color of German Shepherds is definitely black and tan.

Although this is true, the black and tan coloration is actually one of the recessive genes when it comes to coloration.

The black color usually appears on their back as a saddle, they also have black printed across their face like a mask.

Tan coloration is usually located on their chest, sides, underbellies, and on their necks.

The tan color may vary in light or dark tints across different puppies generally, the depth of the tan is based on the parents and gene inheritance.

As puppies, this coat color appears more black than tan, however as they mature their coat lightens to more of a tan coloration.

Famous German Shepherds with this coat coloration include Rin Tin Tin, and is the best coat for show competitions.

How Big Are German Shepherds

Males stand about 24-26 inches at the shoulder and weigh 75-110 pounds.

Females stand about 22-24 inches and weigh 65-90 pounds.

Some German Shepherds are considerably larger than that, but shouldn’t be. This breed is supposed to be athletic and agile, not giant-sized and ponderous. Larger dogs can have more joint problems and a shorter lifespan.

How Long Do German Shepherds Live Are They A Healthy Breed

Black and Red German Shepherd Dog for sale

German Shepherds typically live 10-12 years. Some do live to 13 or 14, but usually with chronic health issues such as arthritis.

And sadly, many don’t even make it to age 10.

As a long-time German Shepherd owner, I know first-hand how many health problems this breed suffers from. Crippling joint diseases, autoimmune diseases, digestive diseases, skin diseases, heart and eye diseases…. truly a breed with serious health problems.
