5 things to know before getting a female German Shepherd

For a female German Shepherd puppy, the weight range in adulthood typically varies between 50 pounds and 80 pounds. Puppies will be between 22 to 24 inches tall on average.

This growth chart timeline is again courtesy of Von Geliebten Haus GSD breeders. It uses an average female German Shepherd that weighs 64 pounds at one year of age.

What Is The Size Of A Full

An adult male German Shepherd is typically 24 to 26 inches tall, while adult female German Shepherds are 22 to 24 inches tall, according to the American Kennel Club German Shepherd Standard.

The estimated full-size varies significantly between sexes. In terms of weight, an adult male German Shepherd weighs anywhere from 75 to 90 pounds. A female German Shepherd weighs notably less at 55 to 70 pounds.

Please keep in mind that these numbers are only estimates to give you an idea of how much bigger a German Shepherd puppy may get. Some dogs will be both smaller and larger than these weight ranges when fully grown due to a variety of genetic and environmental factors.

Other Juvenile Period Physical And Behavioral Developments

During the juvenile or ranking period, German Shepherd puppies start to understand and learn about dominance and submission within a pack.

They can begin proper obedience training towards the end of this period, but you need to bear in mind that your puppys attention span is still quite short.

At around 4 months, they also go through a chewing phase as they start to lose their baby teeth, and they can enter another fear phase.

White German Shepherd Dogs

Although white German Shepherd puppies are occasionally found in litters, the FCI standard has regarded white as a non-colour since 1933. In 1968 the Shepherd Dog Club of America, which is responsible for the standard of the American Kennel Club, finally followed suit.

An exception is today only the Canadian Kennel Club, which still accepts white shepherd dogs in its stud book. Since 2011, the FCI leads the White Shepherd Dog as an independent dog breed under the name Berger Blanc Suisse .

However, white shepherd puppies may not be mated with Swiss dogs and therefore cannot be registered as such.

The German Shepherd Personality And Temperament

German Shepherd Breed Target Height and Weight

Your GSD of either gender is very intelligent. This is one of the most intelligent of all dog breeds! Your German shepherd has an incredibly strong work ethic with tremendous drive and focus while on the job.

Your GSD will bond strongly with at least one and perhaps several family members. To your GSD, you are your dogs life!

Your GSD is far too intelligent and sensitive to tolerate anything but positive training methods that focus on delivering praise, playtime, pets, and treats in response to well-learned tasks and commands. Negative training will likely increase this breeds tendency towards aggression or hostility when poorly handled.

German shepherd: is BIGGER the better? The full adult size of your GSD will depend in large part on the genetic background of its parents. Adult males should range between 24-26″ at the shoulder blade, females from 22-24″. Males within the standard may weigh anywhere from 75-90 lbs. depending on their bloodlines. Females may weigh anywhere from 55-75 lbs. Although your pup will reach close to adult height by 10-18 months, he will continue to fill out until up to 3 years old.

Beware of breeders who emphasize “oversize”, “huge”, “big-boned” breeding stock or puppies.

Bigger is not better in German Shepherds.

The German Shepherd is not built to have a skeletal and muscular structure of an oversize breed. An inch or so out of standard may be acceptable providing the general line is not consistently out of standard. A responsible breeder will offset an oversize dog by breeding with a line that is a bit smaller in order to maintain the standards as closely as possible.

Working Dogs Versus Show Dogs

Something that may determine your German Shepherds overall body conformation is whether they were bred to be a show dog or a working dog. Years of line breeding has produced several distinct types of Shepherds.

Show dogs are known for a sloped back in which the back legs are shorter than the front. This unnatural formation can cause back and hip problems along with an abnormal gait. German Shepherds bred for show will also be thinner than their hardworking cousins.

As you can see in this picture, this is a show-bred German Shepherd with an obvious curved back and short back legs.

Working dogs, on the other hand, are bred for a sturdy, straight back so they can work long hours without getting sore. They tend to be thicker than show dogs and will, therefore, weigh more, even at the same height.

As you can see in this picture, this dog has a straighter back and longer back legs, so it has been bred for working.

Something else I wanted to mention here is that, according to some sources, Black German Shepherds are larger than their bi-colored cousins, despite being otherwise the same. Its hard to prove for sure, but its possible that their recessive genes that carry the black gene may also contribute to a larger size.

White German Shepherds, on the other hand, arent known for being any different in size than other dogs. So, if you have one of these rare and beautiful creatures, you can follow the same charts that were listed above.

German Shepherd dogs will no longer grow in height after 36 months of age, or three years.

You should know theres about a 25 percent weight difference between males and females.

Just remember that the numbers weve given in this article are averages. Your dog may be under or over, and its fine if thats the case!

Dont feel the need to be exact. Dog individuals vary, just like human individuals do.

You can ask your vet for a weigh in and a check up to discuss any concerns.

Are Male/female German Shepherds Better With Children

How much does a German Shepherd puppy weigh?

Generally, female GSDs interact better with children due to their maternal, less dominant nature.

The GSD is a large breed dog. And both males and females are powerful dogs with lots of energy.

And male GSDs tend to be larger and more muscular by nature. They may become too powerful and knock down your kids easily if not well trained.

In genreal, female GSDs are easier to handle around small kids.

Variations Of German Shepherds

It is worth noting that these charts do not apply to the different variations of Shepherds, except possibly White German Shepherds .

East-European Shepherds, King Shepherds, and Shiloh Shepherds are bigger than standard German Shepherds. Miniature German Shepherds are much smaller and have completely different development requirements and problems.

Average Female German Shepherd Height And Weight

An average female weighs between 48 and 70 pounds, or 22 and 32 kilogramsa little less than the average male. At the shoulder, the average female German Shepherd is 22 to 24 inches, or 55 to 60 centimeters tall.

While your dog might appear to be fully grown at one-year-old, the truth is that he or she will still be an adolescent dog at this point, and you might start to experience behavioral problems that you never saw when your dog was a puppy. Dont let your dogs size fool youat a year old, they are still fairly young and need discipline and structure in order to grow into well-adjusted adult dogs.

Parasites Or Worm Infection

Some GSD dogs may experience stunted growth due to parasites. For example, dogs with hookworms or roundworms will have a poor coat or diarrhea, but once you get them on a dewormer, they should perk right up.

The dangers lie in accelerated growth caused by overfeeding and spaying or neutering at an early age.

Growing too quickly can put pressure on your GSD dogs joints and increase the risk of hip dysplasia, especially in breeds with a predisposition to weak joints.;

How Much Should A German Shepherd Weigh

Since each dog is going to be different, you need to look at their overall body condition rather than a weight range. Fortunately, there are body conditioning charts that you can use to figure out if your German Shepherd is at their ideal weight.

As you can see, its easy to determine if your German Shepherd is at the proper weight. Just look at them from the side and from above, feeling for ribs and pelvic bones when necessary.

While German Shepherds are generally thinner compared to other dogs of their size, you still shouldnt be able to see or easily feel their ribs. Younger dogs will also typically be on the thin side before they fully fill out as adults.

Socialization Period: 3 Weeks 12 Weeks

Now that puppies can interact with the world and creatures around them, they begin to do so. Its vital to begin socializing puppies at this point to become accustomed to humans.

Puppies should remain with their mother during this entire period even if theyre already weaned. There are dog social skills that the mother teaches her puppies during this stage. If they are taken from their mother too early, they may have trouble interacting with other dogs later in life.

Here are some of the milestones of this period:

  • Walking well
  • Begin playing with littermates and humans
  • Have most if not all of their teeth
  • Demonstrate adult behaviors including mounting and greeting by sniffing tails
  • Fear response
  • Can begin housebreaking
  • Ears begin to stand upright

Average Male German Shepherd Height And Weight

An adult male weighs, on average, between 66 and 88 pounds, or 30 and 40 kilograms. To measure a shepherds height, measure to the top of their withers or right at their shoulders. Males are typically between 24 and 26 inches, or 60 and 65 centimeters tall.

For the average person, a male German Shepherd will come up to at least their hip. If one of these dogs were to jump up, they would be at least as tall as the average person. They are not so large that they cannot also be fast. Their size supports their bite strength and gives them enough speed to effectively chase down criminals or fend off wolves and other predators.

German shepherds usually grow in stages, depending on their age. How To Get My 4 Month Old German Shepherd To Stop Biting

Dont hit your dog! This will only teach them that when theyre in trouble, its okay to bite. What you should do is give a firm no and then remove the object or take their mouth off of what they are biting. If this doesnt work, try distracting them by giving them another toy to play with. Below are some more tips you can try to stop your puppy to stop biting

  • Teach your dog to obey the no bite command. This will give you more control over them when they are doing anything that involves their mouth, including biting and chewing on toys or objects. When you catch him trying to bite things he shouldnt be eating, say no firmly and then follow it up with a command like drop it or leave it. Praise him when he obeys your command. If you dont catch them in the act, try setting out some items that are okay for him to play with and others that arent such as toys vs socks. This will let them know which they can chew on and what isnt okay to play with.
  • You can also try using a spray bottle to stop them from biting. Fill it with water and then give the command no bite. When he tries to do it again, squirt him in the nose. This will teach your dog that when theyre doing something you dont like such as chewing on an object.
  • These are some effective ways that you can train your four month old shepherd to stop biting. Follow these tips and tricks, and they should be able to break the habit in no time!

How Does A German Shepherd Grow

In contrast to humans, German Shepherds have only about 1 year time for their growth.

It is therefore very important to avoid rearing and feeding mistakes during this phase, as there is hardly any time left for a correction of the diet or the joint problem.

Skeletal defects, on the other hand, usually handicap a dog throughout its life.

What makes a female German Shepherd Dog different from a male German Shepherd Dog? As you will soon discover, there are many ways to examine and attempt to answer this important question!

For some people, aside from simple size, weight, and height considerations, there really is no important or measurable difference between a male and a female German shepherd. But for other people, even the subtle differences between a male and a female German shepherd can be sufficiently important to make one gender a preferable choice to the other in certain specific situations.

    Symbol Of German Virtues

The goal of the breeder von Stephanitz was clearly defined.

He was interested in a versatile working dog, about whose character and working characteristics the breeder had exact ideas.

A German Shepherd dog possessed the virtues courage, loyalty, obedience, endurance and robustness, which made him world famous and in many countries one of the most popular service dog breeds of authorities such as police and military.

At the time of the First and Second World War these characteristics were stylized to German virtues.

The German Shepherd Dog became a symbol of National Socialist sentiment.

As a result of anti-German resentment abroad, the British Kennel Club changed the breed name to Alsatian Wolf Dog or later simply to Alsatian Dog in order to avoid the attribute German in the name.

Only in 1977 this change of name was reversed.

Nevertheless, a German Shepherd Dog was not only on the German side, but also on the side of the Allies a much sought-after war dog.

He attained sad fame, however, above all by his employment in concentration camps and as a faithful companion of Adolf Hitler.

Numerous photos of Nazi propaganda show Hitler with his German shepherd dog Blondi.

Despite this instrumentalisation and a strong decimation by the Second World War, the breed was able to assert itself after the end of the war and soon became one of the most sought-after utility dog breeds in the world again.
