Whining can be good, if not important, in certain circumstances. But constant whining can drive any person nuts.

If you want your German Shepherd to tone down his whining, there are some things that you can do to minimize it.

Whining Can Be A Sign Of Injuries

If a German Shepherd starts to whine, it may be sick or injured. It could be that your pet has had a stomach infection or has been whining a lot recently. German Shepherds Are A Lot Of Work

Why does my German Shepherd whine or cry when I leave ...

You can get a Shepherd, theyre quite a unique and rewarding breed. Ive never owned a dog this loyal and affectionate. But you need to be prepared for the terrors that occur when you dont keep them busy. These are dogs that have been bred specifically to work for us and theyre amazing at it.

Did I mention the mouthiness? My dog Laika doesnt play too rough anymore but it was quite a process to get her to not bite everything at every given moment. If I yelped as a signal to her that it hurt it would just make her bite harder. It wasnt just biting, she would tackle me. If I pushed her away she would make what I now refer to as the death howl and come back twice as hard. She was quite a challenging puppy. Apparently this is a common behavior among Shepherds, so start with the bite inhibition training early.

If you want a German Shepherd by all means go get one. Theyre amazing creatures, they really are. Older ones especially. Just be prepared if youre getting a puppy Ive never had to deal with anything quite as insane as a Shepherd puppy in my life. Youll also have the added benefit of receiving a loyal bodyguard for life.

Maybe my dog is part Dingo and so I shouldnt be blaming bad behavior on the Shepherd breed. I dont think thats very likely though.

Why Do German Shepherds Pee When Excited

Excitement urination in dogs is especially associated with puppies, and its expected that they will grow out of this behavior with age.

When you scratch your GSDs belly, arrive home from work, or a visitor greets them, all these can cause them extreme excitement, and your puppy may pee small amounts of urine. Of course, this is a problem if your pup is on the carpet or lying on your new couch!

According to UCDavis Veterinary Medicine, excitement urination in dogs may also be triggered by a few other causes:

  • Accidental reinforcement this means that you sympathize with and excuse your German Shepherds inability to always hold their urine, and they begin to use it as a way to find sympathy from you.
  • Bladder sphincter this is a bladder dysfunction that comes with decreased bladder control.
  • Genetic predisposition your dogs parents were predisposed or had the condition.

Excitement urination should be differentiated from urine-marking which is a behavior problem. Dogs will spray to mark their territory or communicate their belonging to you. You can learn how to deal with German Shepherd spraying here.

Why Do German Shepherds Tilt Their Heads

There is nothing cuter than a German Shepherd head-tilt and you will find tons of pictures and videos of dogs tilting their heads on all social media platforms. Many owners will make plenty of strange sounds just to see their pup perform an adorable head tilt. So, why do German Shepherds tilt their heads?

German Shepherds tilt their heads when they become interested in something different. They use the position of their head, and more specifically, their ears to learn the direction of the new sound. They also tilt their head when trying to understand what youre saying and to increase visual cues.

There are a lot of other behaviors that German Shepherd Dogs portray. You can read about problematic behaviors in this breed and their solutions from my article on German Shepherd Behavior Problems.

Bonus: Female Dogs Whine When Theyre In Heat

Its the time of the year again.

Male dogs, yet again, come up to your house.

Sniffing. Searching. Wondering where the prettiest female dog lives.

As the males look for their mate, the owner of a female German Shepherd gets sleepless nights.

Their dog whines non-stop. She pleads, hoping she can come outside to meet her Dog Charming.

They want to mate.

This goes on for about two weeks. 12 nights of constant barking and whining.

Good grief.

Twice a year, female dogs go through the heat cycle . When this occurs, female dogs can get pregnant if they are not spayed.

Invest In A Good Training Program

If you havent trained your german shepherd properly, then this is the perfect time to start. Whatever bad behavior your shepherd has, whether theyre constantly whining, barking, or even growling and biting, using the right training program is the key to having an obedient and happy pup.

The training program I love and highly recommend is Train Pet Dog.

With Train Pet Dog, youll save yourself a ton of time and effort. Instead of banging your head against the wall trying to figure out why your dog wont listen, youll follow a path that has been tried, tested, and most importantly, thats given proven results. Not to mention the fact, youll be able to fit the course around your schedule, not fit your schedule around a trainer or obedience class.

So instead of worrying about whether theyre going to be well-behaved or not, youll only have to worry about how much fun youll have with them!

And in most cases its still going to be:

  • Cheaper than hiring a professional.
  • Cheaper than replacing everything they might break.
  • And definitely cheaper than a lawsuit against you, if they decide to bite someone.

Just imagine how great it will feel to finally be able to have peace and quiet in your house, and also know your shepherd has never been happier! Instead, youll have the peace of mind that you have a well-behaved pup, and the boundaries you set for them, will always be there, EVEN IF YOURE NOT.

Why Do German Shepherds Lick Themselves

Have you ever seen German Shepherd behavior where your dog licks his mouth just after looking at someone? If yes, check the person for an angry face.

Researchers in animal behavior in the UK and Brazil have discovered that dogs will lick their mouths in response to angry human faces. So, dont think your dog likes your angry face if he licks his mouth. He is just trying to communicate with you!

But dogs will also lick themselves for medical reasons, especially pruritus. You should, therefore, seek the intervention of your dogs vet if you notice the first signs of excessive itching in your dog.

Some of the medical conditions that will cause your German Shepherd to lick his paws and other parts of his body include:

  • Allergies
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Sarcoptic mange and bacterial/fungal/parasite infections
  • Injury and arthritis pain
  • Some prescription drugs
  • Hormonal imbalance

Note, however, that dogs will often lick their paws as part of self-grooming, and those who are obsessive groomers may do so a bit exaggeratedly.

This is no cause for alarm.

But a GSD pup that is constantly whining could have an underlying health issue.

Your German Shepherd Is Happy

Why does my German Shepherd whine a lot?

Because the German Shepherd is such a vocal dog breed, you can expect your dog to vocalize in all kinds of situations.

Where another dog might simply relax while being petted, your GSD is as likely to groan or moan as a sign of pleasure.

Unfortunately, you may not have any way of knowing this is why your dog is groaning when you first bring your puppy home.

It can take time before you start to notice that every time you rub your dogs belly, they groan, and then you make that connection.
