For the first few steps, don’t press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.
Step 1: Draw two small ovals for the cartoon German shepherd puppy’s eyes. Sketch lightly at first to get the shapes right. Space out the eyes. Don’t draw them too close together. Shade in the ovals but leave a couple of circles blank inside each oval to represent glare. The eye on the right should be a tiny bit smaller than the eye on the left.
Step 2: Below the eye on the right, draw a small sideways oval for the nose. Make the bottom edge of the nose a bit pointy instead of curved. Shade in the dog’s nose but leave a thin strip blank at the top for shine.
Step 3: Draw a curved line on the right side for the muzzle. The German shepherd’s muzzle starts to the right of the nose, then curves down and to the left. Draw a short, curved line for the mouth near the bottom of the muzzle.

How To Draw A Dog Barking Video & Step
Step 15: Lightly sketch a line from the lower canine to the right as a guide for the placement of the German shepherd’s molars. Draw a series of small hill-like shapes on top of the sketched line for the molars. The molars should get bigger the farther to the right they are. Draw the molars on the left side the same way. Start with a lightly sketched line. Now add the molars on top of the sketched line. The molar farthest back should have two bumps at the top.
Step 16: Starting at the molar on the left, lightly sketch a line that curves to the top, left side. Now draw a couple of small, curved shapes for the top molars. Darken the sketched line for the gums. Notice how the top molars slope to the lower right. Inside the mouth, on the lower half, draw the tongue using a couple of curved lines.
Step 17: Use the oval at the top as a guide to draw the rest of the German shepherd’s muzzle. Follow the path of the oval and connect the nose to the top, left canine to close the shape of the dog’s muzzle. Draw a series of short, curved lines along the path of the oval for the wrinkles on the snarling muzzle.
Step 18: Draw a series of short strokes along the curved guide at the bottom to create the German shepherd dog’s furry chin. Add a curved line made up of short strokes on the right for loose skin.

How To Draw A Cartoon German Shepherd
In this tutorial, Im going to teach you how to draw a cartoon German Shepherd
I grew up in South Africa and these dogs were EVERYYYWHERE! It seemed every family owned a German Shepherd, except ours but thats okay because these dudes poop like champions.
This tutorial is broken up into three parts:
- the Pencil Sketch laying down our foundation of basic shapes
- the Inking Stage drawing in dark lines for the main shape of our doggy and thin lines for the details
- the Colouring Stage bringing our doggy to life with pencils! You can colour in one layer if you want to, but I encourage you to go over your character with two or three layers, as this will make the colours more vivid and richer.
Anyway! Before we start drawing, lets think about what makes German Shepherds unique from other doggos.
Traits:
The main things that I focus on when drawing a German Shepherd are their big noses, their eyes and the shape of their ears
Most of their coats can be simplified down to two main colours golden brown and a very daaaark brown/black
As for their posture, Im sure there are lots of lazy German Shepherds out there, but in my mind, these doggies always look alert and prepared for guard dog duty .
