How To Stack A German Shepherd Dog

The German Shepherd dog is one of the most recognizable dog breeds in existence today. Large and powerful with a distinctive tan coat and black saddle, the German Shepherd dog has a long history. Originally developed in the late 1800s as a sheep herding dog, the breed has been used as military service dogs, guide dogs for the blind, and as popular show dogs. The German Shepherd dog is a unique breed in the show ring, as they are stacked far different from any other breed. The stack, or the way the dog stands, is an essential factor in showing off the dogs build. Stacking is not a difficult process, although perfecting it does take a little time and practice.

Instructions

The Pastoral Breed Group

The Pastoral Group consists of herding dogs that are associated with working cattle, sheep, reindeer and other cloven footed animals.

Usually this type of dog has a weatherproof double coat to protect it from the elements when working in severe conditions. Breeds such as the Collie family, Old English Sheepdogs and Samoyeds who have been herding reindeer for centuries are but a few included in this group.

How To Play The Game:

Take the healthy treats and squeeze them between your hands so that their potent scent is transferred to you. Next, place the treats to the side and call your GSD, announcing Sherlock Bones or Treat Trail.

Place them on their leash or behind the dog gate temporarily so they cant follow you around. Ask them to sit and offer them one piece of the treats as temptation. Now, place the first few treats on the floor in easy-to-find spots nearby.

Do this while he watches since hes new to the game and might need a bit of help.

Place the treats about every 5 to 10 steps apart.

Choose a spot thats easy to find for some of the treats and sometimes place the treat behind a table leg or object. After hes successful in the game, make the trail harder and hide the treats in more difficult places.

Now, release your dog from behind the dog gate or let him off his leash and tell him to FIND.

This is one of the easiest games for German Shepherd puppies since you can make a straight trail right in front of them as they learn.

Its A Team Effort: Your Handler And You

New Stack

There is constant communication between you and your handler in the ring. Pay close attention to your handler as they circle around as they are able to read the dog. Usually the handler will cue to you to call by raising their hand. At this time, call your dog using their name or your desired call sound.

You cannot handle your own dog. If you try, your dog and you will not be successful in the ring. Unless your dog is trained to run ahead of you with great power, your run in the ring will be ineffective.

We at Haus Amberg Shepherds practice double handling with our shepherds in the show ring. In the German show ring, the dog moves at somewhat of a fast pace and allows the judge to see the powerful movement behind the dog. ;You will need a Show Collar and a Show Leash. Sometimes your handler will have a preferred one that they will bring, but it is best to have your own for practice with your dog.

Hi Everyone,

Today, I am going to attempt to tell you the correct way to stack a German Shepherd Dog.; The more correct structurally your German Shepherd Dog is the easier they will be to stack.; For example if your German Shepherd Dogs feet turn out and are not parallel to the body lines this is called east/west, and to get the feet in the correct position, you will have to screw them into the ground.; This is very difficult to do while making your German Shepherd Dog comfortable enough to stand still for three or four minutes in a correct stack.

Grabbing the Left Elbow to Place the Left Foot

The basic stack starts always at the front feet.; Throw the leash to the side out of the way of the stack. Grab the German Shepherd Dogs right side scruff and the side of their cheek with your right hand.; With the left hand reach over the shepherd and grab the left elbow and place the left foot directly under the German Shepherd Dog with the left foot pointing straight relative to the body line of the shepherd switch hands now grabbing the left scruff and cheek with the left hand.; Take your right hand and grab the right elbow and place the right foot in perfect alignment with the left foot about five to six apart.; Switch hands again and take your left hand and gently run it down the left side of your German Shepherd Dog down the left leg to the hock.

Sincerely,

Want A Smarter Dog Try Target Training

An easy way to add to your German Shepherds repertoire of tricks or commands is to teach her how to target objects.

Targeting means your dog pays attention to, and then performs an action based on, a particular stimulus . A dog putting his paw on an object on command, or bumping your hand with his nose upon request, is targeting. Targeting is a super-quick behavior to teach and has a variety of uses.

Go to your mat is one handy result of target training. We first teach the dog to target his mat, add the cue Go to your mat, and then place in a location of our choosing. Agility trainers use targeting quite often to teach their dogs not to skip contact zones while climbing or dismounting obstacles. Service dog trainers use targeting to teach German Shepherds to open doors, turn lights on and off, and more. Target training is useful in the show ring to teach dogs how to gait and stack.

    What To Do:

Start with 3 small dishes to place your dogs dinner portion in for this fun game.

This is one of the best dinner games for intelligent dogs to increase their mental stimulation and reduce boredom.

After youve placed their dinner into the dishes, leash your dog or place them behind a dog gate to keep them away while you go outside to hide their dinner. But put them in an area where they can watch you hide the food dishes.

You can also hide the dishes indoors if youre looking for inside games for dogs.

Hide the dishes under unused pots or boxes, behind bushes, or in other locations that are safe for your dog.

The first time you play, set one of the dishes right in the middle of the yard or room so that its easy to find. This is an easy brain game for a German Shepherd puppy to keep them busy.

Now, release your dog and say FIND.

You may have to help your dog find the hiding places in the beginning. Give them plenty of congratulations when they find their food!

You can increase the difficulty of the game by hiding the food in more challenging places or not letting your dog watch where you place the dishes.
