How Much Exercise Do German Shepherds Need

What does the playing German Shepherd and a Kitten look like

German Shepherd puppies and adolescents should have moderate exercise only multiple walks, fetch games, or playing with another dog.

But the growing bones and ligaments in a young dog can be irreparably damaged by too much exercise or the wrong kind of exercise. At this age, there should be no forced running . Restrict jumping as much as possible.

Once the dog is mature, the amount of exercise needed will vary according to the dog’s energy level. But all German Shepherds, to maintain fitness, need brisk walking every day and all-out running in a safe, enclosed area as often as possible.

Dogs from working lines typically want a lot more exercise.

Mental exercise is even more important for German Shepherds. Mental exercise means the dog gets to participate in interesting activities that keep his intelligent mind stimulated.

This might be a dog sport such as agility, rally obedience, musical freestyle, tracking, flyball, herding, or schutzhund. It might be interactive dog toys, or a homemade obstacle course, or learning tricks, or playing games such as Hide ‘n Seek.

Some of these activities are included in my training book, Teach Your Dog 100 English Words.

The Black Color Has No Negative Effect On The Dog

Heres where that negative stigma comes in; people can sometimes fear this dog due to its striking black color. The color of this dog does not affect its temperament. The Black German Shepherd is just as loyal, alert, activeand intelligent as the standard variety and is not predisposed to aggression. She is often aloof at first, but once you bond with her, she will be your companion for life.

Black German Shepherds are also incredibly trainable and are used as police and military dogs, disability aid dogs, and obedience dogs.

Look how obedient this 11-month old Black Shepherd puppy is:

Just like any German Shepherd, their protective instinct can be strong. These are dogs that were used to herd and protect livestock, and they will do the same with their human pack! In the case of your family coming into danger, have no doubt this dog will defend you.

As a companion dog, however, you want her to recognize that not all people are a threat. Make sure you socialize her from a young age so that she gets on well with people in adulthood.

Black German Shepherd Puppies Are Born Black

All German Shepherd puppies are either born black, gray or white and can change color as they grow. Their true coat color can usually be determined at about 8 weeks of age. Black German Shepherd puppies are born black and will stay black through adulthood.

So, if you are looking for a solid Black German Shepherd puppy, you will want to get her at this age, and not before, in order to be sure she is indeed a solid black color.

How To Identify A Pure Breed German Shepherd: 4 Ways You Can Check

The good news is that identifying a pure breed German Shepherd is not difficult. There are a few things you can do and look for, which we have listed for you in this guide.

Weve also mentioned how you might be able to tell if your German Shepherd is mixed if that is of interest to you.

Lets get into it

Get A Genetics/dna Test From Your Vet

Pure Bred German Shepherds – A Great Family Dog

Ask your vet about doing a DNA test for your dog to determine what breeds they have in them.

A DNA test is usually very simple the vet takes a blood sample from your dog, and it gets examined to see what dog breeds, types and varieties are in the blood sample.

Not only can you tell which breeds for sure are in your dog, but it can be a way of pre-screening your dog to determine what the chances/risks are that they develop breed related genetic diseases hip and elbow dysplasia is a common one for German Shepherds.

DNA testing along with purebred papers are probably the strongest indicator your German Shepherd puppy is purebred.

Is Panda German Shepherd An Easy Keeper

Yes! Their grooming care needs are similar to any other German shepherd dog:

They have a thick and dense coat that heavily sheds during the season. To maintain the beauty of their fur, the owner needs to brush the coat daily or at least every other day of the week.

They also need regular cleaning of paws, trimming of nails, checking of ears and eyes. However, they need to be bathed only when the fur seems dirty, or it may cause skin irritation.

What Does A Dwarf German Shepherd Look Like

Except for their stature, dwarf German Shepherds look very similar to regular German Shepherds.

This is especially true when you compare the coat color, muzzle shape, and ear shape of a dwarf GSD to a regular GSD. However, there are still many clear physical signs that distinguish one from the other.

Pituitary dwarfism in German Shepherds is accompanied by some peculiar health issues. These health issues develop at different stages of the dogâs life. As a result, as these dogs grow older, physical differences become more pronounced.

Letâs examine how pituitary dwarfism affects the physical appearance of dwarf GSDs at different stages in their life.

How Sociable Are German Shepherds

Are they friendly with strangers?

Most German Shepherds are reserved with strangers. As the breed’s national club says, a good German Shepherd has:

“a certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. The dog must be approachable, quietly standing its ground and showing confidence and willingness to meet overtures without itself making them.”

As you might imagine, this can be a fine line to walk. Without proper guidance from the owner, a German Shepherd’s natural aloofness can morph over the line to suspiciousness, distrust, and even aggression or fearfulness.

When you own an aloof breed, you need to socialize the dog thoroughly. This means a careful program of teaching him to pay attention to you and mind you in the presence of other people and other dogs. He doesn’t have to like them, but he must accept them.

One thing I should mention: many German Shepherds who bark and lunge at strangers or other dogs aren’t being either protective or aggressive. Rather, this kind of reactivity can be the dog’s attempt to hide his own insecurities behind a blustering facade.

There are also legal liabilities to consider when you acquire a German Shepherd. For example, your homeowner insurance policy might be cancelled or the rates hiked, because people are often quicker to sue if a “guard dog breed” does anything even remotely questionable.

Prevent Your Gsd From Tail Chasing Or Biting

Does my new puppy look purebred?

Tail chasing or tail biting can lead to hair loss, sensitive skin, wounds, infections, and more, so its a very good idea to curb this behavior the moment you see it happening.

Redirection training will likely be your best bet, but this will take time and consistency on your part to ensure you redirect your GSD on to something else, every single time he tries biting his tail.

Tail chasing/biting could be an indication that your GSD is nervous, anxious, bored under-stimulated , or is suffering from anal furunculosis . Try making improvements in certain areas of your GSDs daily routine to see if this reduces the tail chasing.

Additionally, be sure to have a quick inspection of the bum area. Anal Furunculosis is another potential cause of tail biting. This is a chronic, progressive inflammatory disease and will need veterinary attention. Youll likely see a swelling or general irritation around the anus if this is the case.

Do German Shepherd Puppies Have Curly Tails

When it comes to GSD puppies, tail position and curliness vary even more than in adults. Many owners make the similarity between how a GSDs ears will dance around up and down before settling into their adult position.

Some puppies will hold their tails in a different position to what they will have when theyre an adult Its certainly possible that your GSD puppy has a curly tail, and holds it higher than usual, but that doesnt necessarily mean thats how it will end up when hes older. This is very important to keep in mind.

Additionally, tail positions change depending on their current mood, feelings, and temperament. Puppies that are excited and playful will almost always have a raised tail, but this might drop down when they are either calm, resting, nervous, fearful, or anxious.

On the other hand, if your GSD puppy has an extremely curled tail that sits high over his back, this does point towards mixed genetics.

Wipe The Tail Regularly

Tails vary in length and fluffiness, but if your GSDs tail sweeps along the floor, be sure to regularly wipe the tail with some dog-friendly grooming wipes, or if you dont have those, good old baby wipes are fine.

This is essentially a mini bath, without the hassle, and without risking those essential oils. A quick baby wipe of the tail will help keep muck, dirt, and bacteria from building up.

Do Miniature German Shepherds Have Health Problems

Purebred German Shepherds are at risk for a variety of health problems, many of them genetic.;

Because miniature German Shepherd dogs arent purebred German Shepherds, they may be spared from the disorders that can affect their purebred mom but that isnt a guarantee. As a general rule, though, purebred dogs are;far more likely to suffer from certain disorders;than mixed breeds.;

Your mini German Shepherd may still develop one or more conditions that tend to be common in German Shepherds. Its a good idea to watch for the following conditions that require treatment.;

What Is A Miniature German Shepherd Anyway

What does love look like a Puppy German Shepherd and a Kitten

German Shepherds have a lot of appeals. Theyre loyal, easy to train, yet love to play. Their size can put off many potential owners, however. A full-size German Shepherd needs a lot of room to play and run something a lot of people just dont have.;

Thats where the miniature German Shepherd comes in: all of the beauty, loyalty, and intelligence but in a smaller size.;

Before you start searching for miniature German Shepherd puppies, however, make sure you know what youre getting.;

There is no such thing as a purebred miniature German Shepherd.

A mini German Shepherd is usually the result of crossbreeding a German Shepherd with a smaller dog breed.;

The German Shepherds dominant genes usually come out in the form of their coat colors and patterns as well as some physical characteristics like the ears. This is why mini German Shepherds often look just like small versions of their purebred mom or dad.

The type of small dog bred with the German Shepherd will impact what a miniature German Shepherd will look like.;

German Shepherd Signs Of Labor

A dog in labor will generally appear agitated and will pace back and forth as it moves through the first and second stages of labor.

Provide your dog with a private space, either a kennel, box or small room, and lay down blankets or newspapers as your dog will want to nest.

When the dogs temperature drops to below 99 degrees, he will birth pups within 24 hours of this temperature drop.

Hip & Elbow Dysplasia

German Shepherds are among many breeds prone to elbow and hip dysplasia. Dysplasia happens when the joint is malformed and unstable. These abnormalities can happen in the socket, ball, or both. Either one of these conditions can cause premature osteoarthritis as well as laxity in the joint. About;20% of German Shepherds;eventually develop hip and/or elbow dysplasia.;

Hip or elbow dysplasia can be moderate to severe and it tends to be an expensive problem to treat. Anti-inflammatories, a special diet, and a heated bed may help a dog with dysplasia. Sometimes surgery is necessary which may involve hip replacement.

German Shepherd Lab Mix Health

The good news is that dogs joints and eyes can be screened before they breed, so that individuals who suffer from joint dysplasia or poor eyesight can be removed from breeding lines. Furthermore, conditions like obesity are within our control as pet owners and can be prevented.

And its possible that by breeding a Labrador cross German Shepherd, the relatively robust health of the Lab will balance out the misfortunes of the German Shepherd and improve the health of their puppies. However there hasnt been any clinical research to prove or quantify that yet.

In the meantime, the best thing you can do for your future German Shepherd Lab mix puppy is ask as many questions as possible about the health and medical history of their parents, and request certificates of health screening. So what impact do these health concerns have on the life expectancy of this breed?

Other Unique Shepherd Colors

Does my new puppy look purebred?

Although rare, pure white, solid blue, fawn color, pure red and spotted black and white are also found. However, neither of these colors are accepted when it comes to competitions as these colors will only be found due to severe genetic mutations, or they simply dont match the breed standards for the show. A breeds color doesnt necessarily come with health issues, and neither of these do.

To know if your German Shepherd is genuinely black, you need to make sure there are no patches or stripes of another color. Black Shepherds have unique features that are associated with the color, including a straighter back. Youll notice that the average German Shepherd has a slanted back with short legs.

Although black Shepherds still have short legs, they stand taller, making them appear bigger and stronger. There are black varients with spots, creme, silver or tanned patches or combined with a red coat, but these variants look like the average Shepherd and are hard to mix up with the black version.
