Why German Shepherd Dogs Are Easy To Train

Their temper and learning ability make German Shepherd dogs the perfect police dog.

Moreover, GSDs are kind of an overachiever.

It all started a long time ago, specifically in the late 19th century.

As I said, theyre bred as herding dogs. That used to be their job at that time.

They patrolled their guardians cattle and livestock.

And to do so, they must remain watchful. If there are any peculiarities, they have to be agile and ready.

So, theyre trained to listen, watch, and act quickly. And, they didnt disappoint with that at all.

Oh, how well GSDs have done their previous work

And they did that job for a lot of years.

A lot of time has passed before they become the domesticated and smart dogs that humans know and love

Regardless of the long history, German Shepherd dogs keep that personality.

Now, humans take advantage of a GSDs need and tendency to excel.

Thats why GSDs are mostly involved in the police and search and rescue groups.

Moreover, dog parents dont have a lot of trouble with training their GSDs.

Thats because they do well in reward-based training

So, add treats into the equation, and you can watch your GSD work for it.

How Sociable Are German Shepherds

15 Dogs That Look Like German Shepherds

Are they friendly with strangers?

Most German Shepherds are reserved with strangers. As the breeds national club says, a good German Shepherd has:

a certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. The dog must be approachable, quietly standing its ground and showing confidence and willingness to meet overtures without itself making them.

As you might imagine, this can be a fine line to walk. Without proper guidance from the owner, a German Shepherds natural aloofness can morph over the line to suspiciousness, distrust, and even aggression or fearfulness.

When you own an aloof breed, you need to socialize the dog thoroughly. This means a careful program of teaching him to pay attention to you and mind you in the presence of other people and other dogs. He doesnt have to like them, but he must accept them.

One thing I should mention: many German Shepherds who bark and lunge at strangers or other dogs arent being either protective or aggressive. Rather, this kind of reactivity can be the dogs attempt to hide his own insecurities behind a blustering facade.

There are also legal liabilities to consider when you acquire a German Shepherd. For example, your homeowner insurance policy might be cancelled or the rates hiked, because people are often quicker to sue if a guard dog breed does anything even remotely questionable.

Are German Shepherds Easy To Train

Some are easy to train, while others are more moderate.

As we’ve seen, different lines have different temperaments. German Shepherds from working lines are typically more assertive and stronger-willed. A “tougher” German Shepherd will be more challenging to train unless you pay closer attention to building the right Leader-Follower relationship with the dog.

That doesn’t mean “softer” German Shepherds are automatically easy to train. Some dogs with soft temperaments are skittish or shy, making them just as challenging as a strong-tempered dog.

In general, though, a sound-tempered German Shepherd who is a good fit for family life should be easy to train. Just establish the right Leader-Follower relationship and the dog will be happy to work with you.

The ancestry of the King Shepherd is not yet very clear but just one look at these dogs and youll know that theyre undeniably bred from German Shepherds. Many speculate that they also have a mix of Alaskan Malamute and Great Pyrenees in their blood.

Given the combination of gentle giants in their pedigree, it shouldnt be any surprise that the King Shepherd grows up to 31 inches tall and can weigh as much as 150 pounds.

They also share the GSDs saddled black & tan coat but are distinctively longhaired.

Shiloh Shepherd

The Shiloh Shepherd was developed fairly recently by a canine enthusiast who wanted a larger version of the GSD but with a gentler nature. She accomplished this through several crosses but predominantly included the Alaskan Malamute.

Although the Shiloh Shepherd looks very much like the GSD, it is considerably larger thanks to its Malamute ancestry.

They stand between 28 and 30 inches and could be anywhere from 80 to 130 pounds. Its coat is also notably different as it is longer and plusher.

East European Shepherd

East European Shepherds were bred from German Shepherds, which is why the two have a striking resemblance. GSDs were selectively bred with native Russian and Ukrainian dogs to develop this breed. The resulting dog is not only more powerful but also has stronger protective instincts.

Can Dwarfism In German Shepherds Be Treated

Dogs born with pituitary dwarfism suffer from malfunctioning pituitary glands. As a result, dwarf dogs do not produce enough hormones that are needed for their growth.

A well-known solution to this is by supplementing a dwarf dog with hormones from external sources. However, the result of such treatment is not guaranteed. It will oftentimes lessen the severe symptoms, but it will rarely cure the root of the problem.

According to a study from Utrecht University, supplementing a dwarf German Shepherd with synthetic thyroid hormones yielded positive results. The process was able to lessen symptoms. Moreover, dwarf GSDs in the experiment were able to grow their adult teeth and coat.

That said, this kind of treatment is not perfect. The most common side effects of synthetic hormone provision are skin conditions such as cysts and hot spots.

The Bohemian Shepherd: Is He An Ancestor Dog

The status of Bohemian shepherds was at stake for many years. Just recently, the FCI recognized this dog breed as a breed on its own.

Some scientists even claim the Bohemian Shepherd is an old breed that might even be the GSDs ancestor!

Despite this claim, the Bohemian Shepherd is quite distinguished from its German brother. This dog is shorter than the GSD, has a longer and thicker coat colored black and red.

Like other shepherds, this active dog requires plenty of exercises to lose accumulated energy.

Although some might think this is a dangerous breed because of its looks, it must be emphasized that the Bohemian Shepherd is one of the worlds calmest shepherds!

Coat Color And Grooming

That

Malinois have short, straight hair that feels hard to the touch. The hard topcoat and dense undercoat provide weather resistance for a dog who was bred to work outdoors in all conditions. The hair is slightly longer around the neck, forming a sort of mini-mane.

The coat is typically fawn- to mahogany-colored with a black mask on the face, black ears, and black tips on the hairs. Fawn-colored Malinois sometimes have a tiny bit of white on the tips of their toes or a small white spot on the chest.

The short, smooth coat of the Malinois is easy to groom. Brush it weekly with a firm bristle brush, and bathe only when necessary. Malinois shed year-round, more heavily in the spring and fall.

Brush your Malinois’ teeth at least two or three times a week to remove tartar buildup and the bacteria that lurk inside it. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath.

Trim nails regularly if your dog doesn’t wear them down naturally. If you can hear them clicking on the floor, they’re too long. Short, neatly trimmed nails keep the dog’s feet in good condition and keep your legs from getting scratched when your Malinois enthusiastically jumps up to greet you.

As you groom, check for sores, rashes, or signs of infection such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation on the skin, in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and on the feet. Eyes should be clear, with no redness or discharge. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early.

Belgian Malinois German Shepherd Breeds Under Spotlight As Possible War Hero Dogs

Military dogs have a long and storied history of fighting alongside soldiers , but the reliance on mans best friend has increased as the enemy has increased its reliance on improvised explosive devices. Dogs have a far better track record of quickly finding bombs, the New York Times reports.

The military has kept mum on the breed of the dog, but the military usually has relied on Belgian Malinois, German Shepherds and Labradors in previous missions. The Belgian Malinois is a breed not as well known as the German Shepherd or the Labrador, but it is also trained to herd sheep. All three breeds possess the speed, agility and sense of smell needed in war zones.

In 2010, David Zucchino wrote for the L.A. Times: The military considers them just pieces of equipment they even have service numbers tattooed inside their ears.

The Daily reports: Their razor-sharp teeth are made from titanium, their body armor can withstand clouds of hot shrapnel, and theyve been trained to wear oxygen masks for high-altitude skydives into enemy territory.

Gardiner Harris at the New York Times writes: Suzanne Belger, president of the American Belgian Malinois Club, said she was hoping the dog was one of her breed and that it did its job and came home safe. But Laura Gilbert, corresponding secretary for the German Shepherd Dog Club of America, said she was sure the dog was her breed because were the best!
