When standing, you should make sure that your dog is between seven and eight inches tall, and that your dogs back and front legs are parallel to the ground. Make sure that your dog has a good grip on the leash, and that it is slack. Now, it is time to learn how to draw a realistic German shepherd.

The next step on how to draw a realistic German shepherd is learning how to sit. The ideal sitting posture for your dog should be upright with its head and tail high and low, looking straight ahead. Your dog should be able to move its buttocks up and down freely without any stiffness in its back or hindquarters. To make sure that your dog can sit calmly in its spot, give it a treat when it does sit calmly. If your dog tries to jump into the air while your training is going on, stop and return him to his sitting position immediately.

Step 2: Draw a long, curved, horizontal line across the circle for a construction line. Draw this line slightly higher than the middle. Add a curved, vertical line on the top, left side. These lines will help you place the German shepherd dog’s facial features later.

Step 5: Draw another big triangle- like arc on the top, left side of the head as a guide for the dog’s other ear.

German Shepherds tilt their heads when they become interested in something different. They use the position of their head, and more specifically, their ears to learn the direction of the new sound. They also tilt their head when trying to understand what youre saying and to increase visual cues.

How To Draw A German Shepherd Sitting Down

This one is going to be slightly trickier as there were no full videos on how to draw a German Shepherd sitting down.

Youll have to use some creativity!

Here is a video by YouTube channel Art ala Carte, showing you how to draw a wolf sitting down.

She gives a great breakdown at the beginning of the video how to draw the legs, hindquarters, back, neck and outline of the head.

You can follow those instructions, and then use the advice from the other German Shepherd drawing videos to finish of the head as a German Shepherd head.

Why Do German Shepherds Lay Down To Eat

Some people will say fatigue, aging, pain, and injury are reasons for this German Shepherd behavior. While these are valid, there is one reason that seems to be a more logical explanation of why your GSD lays down to eat.

In their wild nature, before we domesticated them, dogs had to hunt their food and protect it from intruders. This meant that keeping sight of their prey from the hunting stage to when the prey was ready to eat was important. Hence, dogs lie down to eat so they can see who is approaching from the front while they enjoy the fruit of their labor.

Below is a photo of my German Shepherd displaying this dog behavior.

What is most interesting is that a dogs natural laying position while eating is better for his health.

Feeding your German Shepherd from his usual bowl can affect your dogs oral and spinal health. This is because eating involves not only a dogs teeth but also other bones and muscles.

Eating the unnatural way can cause misalignments in these bones and muscles and disrupt the bodys acidic pH, which explains the health risks to the spine and the tartar, gingivitis, and loose teeth.

Next time your German Shepherd eats lying down, just smile and say, Well, my dog is being natural today!

How To Raise A Baby German Shepherd

I thought Id share some tips & tricks to raising a German Shepherd since they are pretty hard to take care of.

Food And Water: The thing you will need to most is food and water bowls. This is so they dont get dehydrated or hungry.

Toys: Trust me you will need lots of toys because they will just chew through them all. when they are really little they teethe and normally they bite you because of it, so toys are very necessary.

A Crate/Bed. I would recommend a crate since they will not be potty trained and it is Nice for them to be crate trained, you will still have to take them out to go to the bathroom at night either way. My 1 year old German Shepherd still sleeps in a crate and actually enjoys it since they can sleep better in a crate, she is also potty trained now so we dont have to take her outside at night anymore and usually it take 4-5 months for them to be potty trained but it depends on the dog.

A Leash: Youre always going to need a leash for walking them and many other things that it will come in handy for. On our house there is a long leash so that we can just put her on the leash outside and she cant run away but she can still enjoy outdoors.

Potty Pads: when they are little your going to need some potty pads in their crate because sometimes you might not be able to take them out from their crate and you dont want them going to the bathroom in their crate.

Assess Their Laying Spot

It seems that your German Shepherd doesnt trust the safety of his bed or lying spot. It will also circle the spot to ensure there are no vermin or harmful objects that will make your pets rest uncomfortable.

There is little scientific data to prove the above 3 examples except for the idea that dogs circle before lying down to make a nest. This small study of 62 dogs implied that dogs are more likely to circle before lying down when given a soft, uneven surface to make a temporary nest to sleep in.

How To Draw A Dog Video & Step

Please PAUSE the “How to Draw a German Shepherd Dog” video after each step to draw at your own pace.

For the first few steps, don’t press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw two circles as guides for the German shepherd dog’s body. The circles don’t have to be perfect. They’re just guides. The circle on the left should be about two-thirds the size of the first one. It should be a little lower too. And don’t place it too far away, otherwise your German shepherd dog will end up too long.

Step 2: Draw a smaller circle on the top right side as a guide for the German shepherd dog’s head. This circle should be about half the size of the original, and their edges should touch.

Step 3: Draw two intersecting lines inside the German shepherd dog’s head to help you place the facial features later on.

Step 4: Draw a small circle on the lower part of the head as a guide for the German shepherd dog’s muzzle.

Step 5: Draw two triangle-like lines on top of the German shepherd dog’s head as guides for the ears.
