Mowat was born May 12, 1921 in Belleville, Ontario and grew up in Richmond Hill, Ontario. They sold their collections to the Royal Ontario Museum to finance their trip.:219 Before enlisting Banfield published his field notes in the Canadian Field-Naturalist.
