Audience Reviews For I Am Legend

  • Mar 10, 2016I Am Legend is suspenseful, has nice cinematography and visuals as well as having a good performance by Will Smith. The negatives I have are the CGI as well as the ending. The CGI looked very noticeable especially on the mutants and the ending I feel could’ve been handled differently. Other than that I Am Legend is a solid post-apocalypse film.Mr NSuper Reviewer
  • Dec 26, 2013You can either love it or hate it, but Will Smith’s powerful acting is something you can never deny.Maymay ASuper Reviewer
  • Nov 18, 2013Although the pacing in many parts can be a bit slow, and parts of the script don’t work, I Am Legend succeeds mainly due to its eerie tone and excellent performance from Will Smith. It is an intense and satisfying film that will thrill viewers.Joey TSuper Reviewer
  • May 13, 2013This post-apocalyptic zombie-based film is strong thanks to in part the special effect/CGI work as well as the strong lead of Will Smith. I Am Legend is graphic in the realms of loneliness and isolation and makes a solid film for audiences to enjoy. 4/5

I Am Legend may have been one of several films that helped Will Smith prove his salt as a dramatic actor in the mid to late-2000s , but we all know it was someone else who became the true star of the apocalyptic sci-fi flick.

That’s right, the dog.

The scenes between Robert Neville and his beloved German Shepherd, Sam – who was given to him by his daughter as a puppy before she died in a helicopter crash – truly were the strongest of the film. They were often poignant, sometimes funny, and, at one point, absolutely heartbreaking.

But before you plunge into sorrow remembering how that story panned out for Sam , it might be worth knowing that the real life story is much, much happier.

It turns out that Abbey, the dog who played Sam, is actually alive and well, despite the film’s release being well over 10 years ago.

Better still, she’s still living with the family of her trainer, Steve Berens – who revealed to LADbible that the 13-year-old pooch is now enjoying retirement with his daughter and her kids.

“She’s older now and she doesn’t hear hardly anything,” he told us.

“But she’s still kicking, she still likes a ball and likes a bone.”

Berens, who runs animal training company Animals of Distinction, said that Abbey has ‘always been part of the family’ since film bosses asked him to find and train a female German Shepherd for the role of Sam.

Many actors take their jobs very seriously and thats why they are the best. However, even dogs can become great actors.

Have you ever seen I Am Legend starring Will Smith? If you have seen it, you know that its a great movie. But if you havent seen it yet, I recommend it because one of Smiths co-stars is a German shepherd named Abbey. She plays a dog named Sam in the movie and belongs to Smiths character, Dr. Robert Neville. The movie has a developing plot and Abbey helps drive it home.

Recently, it was the 10th anniversary of the movie, so Abbeys owner Steve Berens announced that her 13th birthday was around the corner. Even though she is older now, shes still the best friend that anyone can hope for. Abbeys performance in the movie was so excellent, it even earned her honors from critics and fans.

Her performance is so good and the interaction between her and Smith is what drives most of the action in the movie. Their teamwork is really enjoyable to watch.

Abbey took to acting in films relatively quickly, according to Berens. His company acquired her in July in anticipation of her role in the film, I Am Legend, and by September she was ready to go, but not without frustration.

The Canine Star Of ”i Am Legend”

    • Movie

In the dog-eat-dog world of Hollywood, some aspiring starlets will do whatever it takes to get to the top. Then theres Abbey. The 3-year-old German shepherd, who plays Will Smiths best friend in the sci-fi epic I Am Legend, took an old-fashioned road to fame: She got discovered. Plucked from a California kennel by Steve Berens, a trainer with 28 years of industry experience, Abbey was exactly the kind of light-colored shepherd that Legend director Francis Lawrence had been looking for. The film, set five years in the future, tells the story of a scientist who struggles to survive in a postapocalyptic New York City with only his four-legged pal, Sam , for company. It was a demanding part, and Berens knew it would take more than a few Method classes to get his new protégé ready for the camera. We were pretty much starting from scratch, he recalls. She didnt even know her own name.

Three weeks of intensive coaching followed before Abbey was ready to meet her costar. Sparks flew instantly: Will came walking up, and Abbey barked at him, recalls Berens. But Smith patiently earned Abbeys respect, and the two headed to New York City for a grueling six-month shoot for the film, which is based on a 1954 vampire novel of the same name.

The book ends with a dying Neville realizing that, to the vampires, he is the bogeyman, the stuff of nightmares, as vampires themselves were once to humans. He will become a legend, not because hes a great man, but because in his extinction he will be a cautionary tale and a mythical figure to a newly formed society.
