How To Train The German Shepherd Wolf Mix

GERMAN SHEPHERD! 5 Reasons Why YOU SHOULD GET a German Shepherd!

The breed is extremely intelligent and trainable but can be stubborn when it comes to following commands. This is because they sometimes lack the motivation to obey.

Like GSDs, this hybrid needs to learn bite inhibition and socialization from a young age. This is very important because of their wolf-like nature which makes them even more weary of strangers. A good rule of thumb is to introduce them to at least 100 people by the age of three months.

Positive reinforcement training is the best method. Reward them for good behaviors or when they discontinue any bad behaviors. Because of their strong will, a confident, consistent and firm owner has the best results.

Prepare for lots of chewing, digging and howling as this breed loves to do all three. Keep their minds busy with games and use chew toys to help alleviate some of their more aggressive behaviors.

Petsafe Wireless Dog Fence

Most electric dog fence systems aren’t actually invisible. They require you to bury up to 2,000 feet of wire around your yard, digging trenches, and then covering them up — while hoping that the grass doesnt die above the wire.

The PetSafe Wireless Dog Fence changes the game completely. There are no wires that you have to bury, and the fence is easily detected by your dogs to ensure they always know where the boundary is located.

Pros

Cons

  • Operating Range May Be Impeded: If you install the device near other electronic components you may find out that you have issues trying to run proper testing, and when you are trying to set the boundary during your initial installation. Tech support recommends that you keep the sending unit at least 5 feet away from other electronic components.
  • May Interfere With Wireless Security System: Some customers have reported that their wireless security system would interfere with the boundary, causing inconsistent testing, and sometimes failure to properly operate. If you have a wireless security system in your home, verify the frequency range it uses, and then compare to the wireless containment system.

Final Words

While a bit pricey, the best invisible dog fence you can buy is PetSafe Wireless Dog Fence. It is perfect if you want to keep your GSD in the yard, without having to dig your yard up in the process. There is no dealing with wiring that can become tattered or frayed, requiring constant maintenance.

Will My Dog Jump Over My Fence

Some dogs jump fences, but most actually climb them, using some part of the fence to push off from. A dog may also dig under the fence, chew through the fence, learn to open a gate or use any combination of these methods to get out of the yard. Knowing how your dog gets out will help you to modify your yard.

Make That Fence Impossible To Climb

No matter how high your fence is, a clever dog will still try to get over it somehow. Even if he cant actually jump it, he may be able to climb. When choosing a fence, its crucial to make sure the design of the fence itself is totally climb-proof. Chain link fences are a bad idea for climbersthey provide your dog with easy footholds! A solid panel fence, on the other hand, has a flat surface without anywhere for your dog to stick his paws.

Once you have your climb-proof fence, make sure theres nothing your dog can use to give himself a boost. Dont place a planter or a birdbath or anything else your dog can climb onto alongside the fence.

A Fence Is Like A Rule So Dont Break The Rules

How Much Does A German Shepherd Weigh On Average Dog ...

I wanted to share an experience we had here not too long ago. I was outside one day and my backyard neighbor called me over to our fence. He wanted me to know that while I was sleeping the day before, the kids who live across the yards were outside playing kick ball. One of the kids has a pretty darn good kicker because he managed to kick the ball into our yard which youll just have to trust me on this, is one heck of a kick! His brother decided to go get the ball which meant he had to climb our fence to get it. Our neighbor happened to catch the boy scaling the fence and very quickly and sternly told this boy in no uncertain terms that for his own safety he should never climb this fence.

Our fence is a chain link fence about 6 feet tall with really sharp chain link points on the top. We saved money on the fencing by purchasing it second hand and it doesnt have the finished top on it like most chain link fences do. My eyeballs about popped out of my head when my neighbor told me this. Visions of me not seeing this kid in our yard retrieving his ball and me unknowingly letting the dogs out was a pretty scary picture. It would be so easy for me to do this because I cant see all corners of our yard unless I physically go outside. I also pretty much assume that our fence means nobody would be in our yard. I dont know how this kid managed to get over our fence without hurting himself!

How Can I Prevent My Dog From Leaping Over The Fence

There are a few ways to prevent your dog from leaping over the fence. You can construct it so that its high enough to deter the dog, or built out of material that is slippery, like vinyl. You should also not leave your dog home alone too often. Bored dogs will find creative ways to get over the fence.

How To Train Your Gsd To Not Jump

If you have an issue where your German Shepherd likes to jump on you or your friends, theres a way that you can train them to stop this behavior.

Here is one method you could try:

  • Have a family member, trainer, or friend standing 6-7 feet away with your German Shepherd on a short leash.
  • With a handful of treats, approach your German Shepherd slowly. Make sure they know you have treats by showing them or letting them smell them beforehand.
  • If your German Shepherd jumps as you approach, take a step away and say No in a calm, but firm voice. If you are able to keep moving forward without your dog jumping, give them a treat and some attention .
  • At some point, you should change to rewarding them with just your attention so they dont become motivated by food rewards.
  • Keep up with this training and repeat until you form a habit.

GSDs are opportunistic. This means that if they can do something to get what they want, they will. If that behavior is reinforced, they will be more likely to do it again.

If this has been the case with jumping, and you want them to stop, then you can make this habit stop by not rewarding them when they do this.

Sportdog Brand Contain + Train System

Another system with buried wires, the SportDOG Contain + Train system can be more difficult to install than wireless fences, but this model comes with an included vibration setting and remote control so you can manually train your dog.

The kit comes with 1 collar for your German Shepherd, but you can expand the system for unlimited dogs if you purchase extra collars.

The SportDOG kit comes with enough wiring to cover 1 1/3rd acre, which is disappointing when compared to some other collars on our list, but it can be expanded with more wiring to cover 100 acres!

As far as waterproofing, the collar is submersible up to 25ft underwater.

The most reported issue with the collar is the tendency for the battery to run out quickly, but this particular kit has rechargeable batteries that are more reliable than the lower level kit that uses 9v batteries.

  • Installation

Installation is similar to other in-ground invisible fences, consisting of burying the wires and marking the boundaries with flags.

  • Multiple Dogs

The system claims to support an unlimited amount of dogs, but the kit only comes with one collar, so for multiple dog households, youll have to purchase extras.

  • Area Coverage

Included in the kit are enough supplies to cover 1 1/3rd acre, but it can be expanded up to 100 acres.

  • Remote Control

Yes! The SportDOG Contain + Train system comes with a remote collar so you can train your dog manually as well.

How Long Does German Shepherd Puppy Biting Last

DIY Electric fence install and setup for a German Shepherd

Generally, German Shepherd puppies start teething at 16 weeks of age. This period lasts up to until they are about 24 to 32 weeks-old. The nipping, biting, and chewing is very normal during this stage. However, if your German Shepherd puppy retains the habit after that period, it can be a big problem.

How Much Physical Exercise Do German Shepherds Need

The noble German Shepherd was bred as a herding dog and typically assisted with watching sheep and other livestock. German Shepherds, therefore, need a lot of physical activity.

Without meeting their need for physical and mental stimulation, they grow bored, display destructive behavior such as chewing or digging and act out through barking or whining.

It is generally accepted that German Shepherds need at least two hours of physical activity every day, and that doesnt mean just leash walking!

Check out this 2-minute video on how to keep a dog happy and healthy in an apartment or smaller space. Number one on the list is to make sure your dog gets lots of exercise:

What To Consider When Buying A Fence

If your german shepherd is jumping the fence, you may just plan on buying a new one. Getting a new one can be an effective way of keeping your german shepherd in, but there are a few things to remember.

Make Sure Its At LEAST 6 Foot

As previously mentioned, the average german shepherd can jump up to 6 feet high. However, some can jump even higher.

When picking a fence to keep your german shepherd in, make sure you pick one thats going to be high enough.

6 foot is a good place to start, however, the bigger the better.

Dont Use Chain Link

A chain-link fence is going to be terrible for two reasons. First of all, your german shepherd is going to be able to see out of it. This means whatever catches their eye is going to encourage them to jump out,

Secondly, chain-link fences are a lot easier to climb. If your german shepherd gets close enough to the top, theyll be able to use the holes in the chain link to climb the last bit of the way.

Avoid Sharpe Edges

Make sure you dont pick a fence that is sharp at the top or has sharp parts on it. German shepherds are smart in a lot of ways, but when it comes to their own personal safety, they lack brains a little bit.

Generally, a plain, wooden fence is your best bet.

How High Can A German Shepherd Jump

Without any run up, a German Shepherd can jump a height of 4 to 6 feet. With a run-up, a German Shepherd can clear even higher fences.

Some have reported their German Shepherds making it over fences that are 10 feet high! If you have a large and healthy German Shepherd, you may be amazed at the heights they can reach.

Alongside this big jumping ability, German Shepherds are smart enough to climb. Give them a few places to put their paws, and they can make their way over very large fences.

A 6-foot fence is the minimum height requirement. This should be enough to prevent a normal German Shepherd from making an easy jump.

However, if you have a big yard , you probably want to add at least an extra foot.

German Shepherd Jumping Over The Fence How Do I Stop

How High Can a German Shepherd Jump? Can They Clear the Fence?

The dogs love jumping and may even try to hop over out of a mere fun of doing so. To make sure they never hop over, make sure the fence is 6 or 7 inches high. Alternatively, you can use opaque fences that keep your dog from fully accessing the outer world.

Another way of preventing the jumping is removing any escape aid. Remove anything that helps the dog to scale the fence, like benches.

Obedience training can also work as it eliminates unwanted behavior in your furry friend. The training maintains a dogs acceptable behavior, and the dog slowly learns to portray the behavior.

A dog owner can also choose to increase the dogs physical activity. Since German shepherds are athlete dogs, keeping them bored may trigger their will to hop over and run around. Try finding time to play with the dog or take him for walks.

What Type Of Fence Is Best For German Shepards

There are plenty of old-fashioned options for the German Shepherd owner who doesnt want an invisible fence. The trick is to ensure you use not just the proper height but the proper fence structure and materials, so your GSD doesnt revert to climbing in place of jumping. For example, a horizontal piece of wood or metal may appear as a convenient foothold to your dog!

Do German Shepherds Need A Fenced Yard

Many dog owners might argue that a fenced yard is convenient, but its not necessary. This is probably the case if you own small dogs that you can keep most of the time indoors, but for big outdoor dog breeds like German shepherds, a fenced yard is necessary.

Now, imagine what would happen if there is no fence surrounding the yard, where your shepherd spends his time. People, including small children and other dogs, might tease or annoy him, someone could steal him, or he could run into the road and be injured.

Some people might choose to chain their dogs up in their yards, and that is a big no because German shepherds can become dangerously aggressive if kept this way. As a matter of fact, many fatal dog bites and attacks in the US involve a chained dog.

Do You Need To Leave A Gap Between Fence Boards

When building a wood fence, be sure to plan for a space between the pickets and the ground. In most applications, a wood fence should be installed at least two inches off the ground. Your posts and rot boards should be the only fence components that contact the ground.
