OCD is a multi-factorial disease. Genetic factors are most important, with strong breed predispositions, particularly in Labradors and giant breed dogs. Different breeds appear to be predisposed to developing the condition in different joints. For example, the shoulder joint is most commonly affected in Border Collies, Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds, while the hock is more commonly affected in Bull Terriers, Rottweilers and Labradors.;Various other factors such as dietary or nutrition problems, high growth rate or calorie intake over the first few months of life, hormonal imbalances and joint trauma can also increase the risk of developing OCD.

Three Principles Of Movement

Movement experts and judges evaluate movement in the show ring three ways, from the side, going and coming. These are the traditional techniques used to reveal the faults and virtues of a dogs gait. The diagonal carpet in the show ring is used by the judge to evaluate key parts of the front and rear assemblies when the dog is moving away from and towards the judge. Evaluating the front and rear assemblies begin with three principles of movement. The first is called a straight column of support. This means that the leg assembly forms a single column of support from the hip joint or shoulder to the ground .

Figure 2 Single Column of Support

Any deviation from the single column of support is faulty. This does not mean perpendicular legs, but a straight line from the shoulder to the pad. When faculty movement is noted the cause can be related to several conditions such as loose shoulders, twisting hocks or cow hocks.

Figure 3. Traveling in the same plane

Figure 4. Traveling in the same plane

There are other variations of movement involving the front and rear legs. For example, some dogs will single track with their front feet and move wide apart with their rear feet.Sometimes this movement is reversed. Figure 5 shows a dog that single tracks while traveling in the same plane. Of all the faults of alignment, Figure 6 illustrates the most noticeable fault called crabbing or sidewinding.

Problems In The Hock Joint

Cow Hocks

With the exception of osteochondrosis, most problems affecting the hock joint are the result of a significant trauma such as a road traffic accident, and so the problem will usually be very obvious. Fractures and dislocations of the joint are common, and almost always require surgical repair.

Siberian Huskies Highly Intelligent But Lacking Obedience

It is not at all unusual for this breeds striking intelligence to stand out and yet perform poorly during obedience classes Huskies may even demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of anything you tell them to do.

Siberian Huskies are actually of average working intelligence and obedience, and ranked 74th on Stanley Corens list of the top 138 intelligent breeds.

As pets, they can have a complete lack of concern for pleasing their owners the only way to overcome this is through persistence and a high-value rewards system.

Despite this, Huskies thrive when working in a pack their sledding prowess and willingness to cooperate with handlers becomes more evident when working as part of a team.

How Do You Keep Feet Pasterns And Hocks Straight

A GSDs feet should be short, compact, and round, with arched toes and thick pads. German Shepherds carry about 60% of their weight on their forequarters, and thus, their front feet and bones will be larger than the rear.

A German Shepherds rear feet include the phalanges, bones of the toes, and metatarsus, equivalent to your foot proper. The front feet also have phalanges and the metacarpal bones, or hand bones. Three bones comprise each toe, with the nail growing from the last segment.

Each metacarpus has five bones. Rare dogs have five metatarsal bones, but German Shepherds usually have four.

The carpus is equivalent to the human wrist and the tarsus to the ankle. A GSD has seven small bones in her carpus.

Seven bones also comprise the tarsus, commonly referred to as the hock. The term pastern, according to The Canine Chronicle, can refer to both the carpus and tarsus in canine anatomy.

German Shepherd feet are not often involved in disease, but they are vulnerable to traumatic injury. Dvm.360.com reports metatarsal hairline fractures are common.

Collaborating sources put the incidence of metatarsal fracture near 12% of all canine broken bones. Metacarpal and metatarsal fractures can be quite severe because of detrimental effects on ligaments.

Causes Of Hip Pain In Dogs

The first of two common problems affecting the hip joint is Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease. It is seen in young Terrier dogs, and usually presents in pups between 5 and 8 months of age. Extension of the hip is usually very painful. The condition is caused by a failure of the blood vessels ‘feeding’ the growing head of the thigh bone. The head of the femur forms part of the hip joint, and as it starts to decay without a blood supply, it becomes painful for the dog to move the joint, as each movement causes tiny microfractures of the bone. Surgery is necessary to remove the affected bit of bone; a femoral head and neck ostectomy effectively removes the hip joint, but these small dogs do very well after the procedure and very rarely show any long-term lameness.

Hip dysplasia is the most common disorder of the hip joint, and is usually seen in large breed pedigree dogs such as the Labrador and German Shepherd. The condition is a failure of the hip joint to develop properly, allowing the head of the femur to slip in and out of the joint, causing pain and damage to the joint surface. Signs are often seen in young dogs from 5 to 14 months of age, but often subside when the dog has grown to his/her adult size. However, even in dogs which appear sound after this period, osteoarthritis will develop later in life.

How Is It Diagnosed

Hock instability can be diagnosed relatively easily on physical exam. The veterinarian must test the hock by trying to open the joint from the outside and inside sides of the joint with the hock in both extension and flexion. The hock must also be stressed by twisting it from side to side to see if the ligaments are stable. It is important to determine what structures have been compromised in the injury leading to the joints instability. This can be done by taking stress radiographs, in which forces are applied to the hock in a different direction, and radiographs are taken. A variety of radiograph positions and views are needed to identify if and where a bone fracture is.RETURN TO TOP

Hock Instability: What Is It

The hock joint connects the dogs shin bone to the paw where ligaments hold the bones in place. When these ligaments tear, it can cause instability in the joint, making it difficult for a dog to walk. Hock injuries can also stem from a fracture in the shin bone. Most hock injuries stem from trauma, likely due to a fall, accident, or another misstep.

Neck And Chest Provide Stature And Impression

Loose hocks/cow hocked *** can she be corrected ...

Like all mammals, German Shepherds have seven vertebrae encasing the spinal cord running through the neck. They have 13 pairs of ribs corresponding to 13 vertebrae of the thoracic or chest region.

Nine of the rib pairs connect directly to either side of the breastplate or sternum, composed of eight fused bones. The sternum in dogs is much narrower than a persons, and canids lack the prominent clavicle or collar bone of humans.

Ribs 10 through 12 connect to the sternum via cartilage while the last rib does not have any attachments and thus is called a floating rib.

Rib injuries can cause forelimb lameness or what looks like back pain in German Shepherds. If you or your medical professional do not have a clear history, lameness from rib problems can go misdiagnosed for weeks.

Seven vertebrae make up the lower back of German Shepherds and another three are fused to form the sacrum over the pelvis.

According to Calvet.upenn.edu, the most common area affected by intervertebral disc disease, or a slipped disc, in Shepherds is the seventh lumbar through the first sacral vertebrae.

Herniated discs in German Shepherds are rarest from t1 through t10 , presumably because of protection from the ligament that runs across these particular vertebrae.

The Siberian Husky Has An Intense Personality

If you thought your GSD mixed puppy would acquire a degree of calmness from the Siberian Husky parent, you may be disappointed!

The popular television series Game of Thrones caused an explosion in demand for the Siberian Husky however, a lot of these new owners werent up to the challenge.;

Following this spike in demand, many new owners ended up abandoning these beautiful dogs to local shelters. These people were simply overwhelmed and unprepared to care for these medium-sized dynamos who tend to take on the following traits:

  • Vocal Huskies dont bark a lot but sing, howl, and cry.
  • Fail to follow Bred and used for centuries to pull sleds, Huskies often try to take the lead in various aspects of the relationship with their owners.
  • Stubborn
  • Predatory They tend to chase and may potentially kill small animals, including cats.
  • Wanderlust Huskies actively seek to escape and run.
  • Affectionate and playful

Shoeing To Compensate For Specific Lameness Problems

When a horse’s natural support is altered on one end , the horse is forced to compensate with the remaining support on the other end. Horses with gaits that have been animated lift their front feet much higher than normal and compensate by taking a longer stride, or walk, with their hind feet. This exaggerated gait causes stress on the hock joints and the supporting soft tissues. A similar problem can occur in Standardbred racehorses. Whatever the reason, compensation for loss of support in the front end causes the hindfeet to come further under the body. This additional effort eventually fatigues the hock joints and may result in hock damage.

Considering the Horse’s Conformation

The horse’s conformation must be considered when determining proper balance for the hindfeet. A wide-hipped horse that stands with a narrow base behind is most comfortable standing that way. Care must be taken to keep the leg and hoof in alignment; it may not be vertical when viewed from directly in front of or behind the horse, but it is in proper alignment when viewed from the direction the leg is pointing. There is a natural outward rotation or wringing of the hocks as the hoof on the base-narrow horse is unloaded, because the hock is not directly over the hoof. Cow-hocked, or base-wide horses, on the other hand, rotate their hocks inward.

How Is It Treated

Treatment requires surgery, but the surgery technique employed depends on the type of injury that is present, ligament damage versus a fracture.

  • If a fracture is present, surgery using pins, wires, and screws to repair the fracture is performed. To minimize arthritis development in the joint, the fracture must be perfectly aligned, and the pin must not penetrate the joint.
  • If a ligament is torn, screws are placed in the bones above and below the joint, and heavy permanent suture is tied around screws to simulate the ligament. With time, scar tissue develops to add support to the surgically repaired joint.RETURN TO TOP

You Can Identify The Gsd Breed By Her Head

A dogs head is one of the most defining characteristics that distinguish him from his ancestor, the gray wolf, and other breeds of dogs.

Humans have had the largest role in the facial and cranial diversity of over 400 dog breeds, selecting for them while breeding to obtain other desirable traits.

The German Shepherd should have a noble head, according to the AKC breed standard. German Shepherds have a classic slightly dome-shaped forehead that you can recognize even in profile. They combine a mildly arched face with a long snout and square jaws.

Cartilage makes up the flap of the ear, and three little bones are responsible for sound transmission and balance. As an aside, most sources do not include these auditory ossicles in the total bone account.

There are three classifications of skulls in dogs based on size and length. Louis Donald wrote about them in a well-detailed GSD breed conformation article. German Shepherds have a medium-sized or mesocephalic skull. They have 42 teeth.

As for comparisons, the English and French Bulldogs have brachycephalic, or short broad skulls and the Borzoi and Collie have dolichocephalic or long narrow heads.

Sirius Dogs says the GSDs skull is about 40% of her height measured from the floor to the tops of her shoulders.

Along these same lines, a sloping back causes hindquarters to become more angulate and, thus, prone to lower back pain. These bent legs could point toward one of many health problems, one of which is hip dysplasia.

Although irreversible, canine hip dysplasia can be monitored and treated to reduce chronic pain. According to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals The progression of it and the treatment options available depend on a number of factors, including the degree of misalignment and age of the dog.

CHD has a range of signs, depending on the severity of the disease and degree of looseness in the joint. The severity also ranges from mild to extreme painâsome German shepherds even have to use a wheelchair. Dog hip dysplasia surgery for severe cases in medium to large dogs can be expensive. If invasive surgery is not be the best choice for your dog, look into non-surgical, conservative management options, such as physical therapy, weight control, acupuncture, anti-inflammatories, and massage therapy.

Dog leg braces may slow the progression of this chronic issue. Notice that your dog is having elbow issues? It works just fine!
