How Long Does It Take For A German Shepherd To Give Birth

How Many Puppies Can A German Shepherd Have

On average, the length of gestation/pregnancy for a German Shepherd is about 63 days. This starts from the time of conception. Given the fact that German Shepherds are larger dog breeds, it may take a longer period to give birth. This period may be slightly longer than that of a small-sized dog breed. If you are keen on keeping tabs on your German Shepherd pregnancy, the ideal way to go is to keep track of her heat period and take cognizance of the number of times she is bred and record the dates and times.

What Breeds Of Dogs Have Webbed Paws

According to Rover, most dogs do have slight webbing between their paws, which you can observe if they will allow you to spread their paw out and look.

Most dogs do not have very much webbing, but some dogs were bred specifically to have webbed paws as a result of the jobs that they helped their people do.

According to Adrienne Farricelli, a dog trainer who writes for Dog Discoveries, the following breeds of dogs were bred to have webbed paws:

German Shepherd Stages Of Labor

The labor of a German Shepherd is divided into 3 stages.

Stage 1

The first stage of labor starts around 24 hours before delivery. During this stage, the dog refuses to eat or drink, starts vomiting or panting, and becomes extremely restless as the contractions begin at this stage.

Stage 2

Stage 2 starts when the dog starts giving birth to the puppies. This stage can last up to 24 hours. A dog delivers puppies with a gap of 1 and a half hours. This gap must not exceed 2 hours as it can indicate some complications.

It is better to know with the help of an x-ray or ultrasound that how many puppies are there inside the dog. So that you may know when stage 2 completes.

Stage 3

Stage 3 starts almost at the same time as stage 2. This stage starts when the placenta, the newborn puppy, appears and completes when the last placenta is delivered.

Stage 3 ends as soon as the stage 2 completes.

Training Goal #: Begin Obedience Training

The German Shepherd Dogs work ethic is legendary, and you can encourage your dogs best working traits with early and ongoing training. GSDs excel at obedience, so begin teaching your puppy basic commands like sit, down, and stay, as well as loose-leash walking, from an early age. Enrolling in a puppy obedience class can be extremely helpful both for teaching these commands as well as socialization, and its not too early to begin thinking about CGC training as well.

Why Do German Shepherds Tilt Their Heads

Pure Bred German Shepherd Puppies

German shepherds tilt their heads because it has become a sort of instinctual action over the years. This is a way for them to engage in an attempt at communication with people. German shepherd dogs have trained humans to know what this head movement means and use it as a way for us to communicate with these dogs. The dominant theory is that they are signaling submission to you, often coupled with a whimpering noise. In other words, theyre trying to appease whatever person or creature it is that scares them making sure said person knows that theyre not overtly threatening someone from showing the potential consequences from getting something from them wrong..

German shepherd at the age of two years or less than two years has a different training pattern. This is the developing stage of bones and muscles of the young puppies. Puppies need plenty of rest and sleep. Till six months the puppies are ready to go for a walk. This makes the puppies physically active. After twelve months, the puppy will start to mature by growth. This makes the dog physically fit for running. German shepherd breed is strongly developed and well-built, so running is one of the talents in the breed. Diet Of The Female German Shepherd Dog

A poorly fed or malnourished GSD will out-rightly produce fewer puppies. Reason being the body cant get enough energy to hold many puppies.

Whats The Best Diet for a Pregnant GSD?

Proper care and feeding are essential to a pregnant Shepherd.

Here is what you can give your hound to ensure all nutritional aspects are covered. I always recommend such a diet when your lovely hound is pregnant.

  • Chicken wings and neck.

However, as a responsible dog owner always feeds your dog irrespective of its status.

Point to note:

  • Leftovers, grapes or onions should not be a part of the menu for your German shepherd.
  • Dogs dont love canned food, as most cost a fortune, and often they cause loose stool.

Juvenile Period 3 Months 6 Months

Can a GERMAN SHEPHERD be left alone?

Between months 3 and 6, the puppies go through the juvenile period. The baby phase will have come to an end. They should be able to eat easily, interact with others, and should be on the brink of being housebroken. They will continue to grow steadily and are ready to be trained.

They will begin to lose their milk teeth during this period as well, so keep an eye out for the risk of chewing items that you might not approve of. Having dog-approved chew toys on hand can help both the puppies and the owners get through the teething phase without frustration.

What Is A German Shepherds Neck Size

Measuring your German Shepherds neck is important to help you find the perfect collar size to ensure that they are secure and comfortable.

To do this, use a measuring tape to measure loosely along the base of your puppys neck. Ensure that you can slide two fingers in between the tape and your puppys neck. The neck size of a German Shepherd is 18 24 inches

The Puppy Needs To Learn Social Skills

Another common reason why many breeders feel that puppies should stay with their litters and mothers at least until they turn eight weeks old is that the puppy will learn important social skills.

The best trainer for any German Shepherd puppy is typically going to be the mother dog. GSD moms are masters at teaching their puppies some manners and teaching them what behaviors they will and wont tolerate.

As well, GSD puppies will have the chance to play and learn from their littermates and get comfortable with having people around by watching their mother interact with the breeder.

Some theories suggest that this initial period of dog-to-dog socialization needs to happen before the dog-to-people socialization so the puppy can learn to be a dog first and then to be a companion to humans next.

Health Concerns Associated With Floppy Ears On A German Shepherd

When a dogs ears lay flat, less air can circulate through their ears, and more moisture can build up. This can lead to a couple of issues, including:

  • Need for more frequent cleaning: It is always essential to clean your dogs ears, whether they are pointy or not, but if your dog has floppy ears, they will need to have their ears cleaned more often than dogs with pointy ears.
  • Higher risk of ear infections: Even with frequent cleanings, floppy-eared dogs are prone to ear infections due to the heat and moisture trapped by their ears lying down.
  • High risk of ear injuries: Having floppy ears also leaves your dogs ears more vulnerable to potential harm. Their ears are more likely to get caught in something or to get bitten and torn when playing or fighting.
  • High risk of hearing damage: If an ear infection or injury is severe enough, your dog could experience hearing damage and even total hearing loss.

Floppy dog ears may be cute, but they do require extra care and attentiveness than pointy dog ears.

Ideally, your German Shepherds ears will naturally become pointy as they get older, but there are some things you can do to encourage this process.

How To Know If Your German Shepherd Is Pregnant

Sometimes, German shepherd pregnancy may not be obvious. After all, German shepherds are known for enduring pain.

Thats why as a pet owner, you should make sure you know the signs of gestation period. Heres a look at the four most common indications of German shepherd pregnancy.

  • Increased Appetite: To cater to the needs of her pups, a female GSD will usually eat significantly more food.If you get what this means, you should make sure you stock up on dog food for your pet. Also, consider buying food that are healthy rather than those that focuses on taste and not nutrients.
  • Weight Gain: There will also be an increase in weight during German shepherd pregnancy. This can range from a 20% increase in weight up to 50% increase. While this may be overwhelming at first, dont worry because theyll significantly lose weight after the gestation period.
  • Frequent Urination: In general, a female dog can mark its territories more frequently when they are pregnant. They do this by urinating in various places. While urine-marking is done by female German shepherds sometimes, you will rarely see this. Besides, they dont choose the place to mark, be it the sofa, the television, or the corner of the room.

Sure, these signs are helpful for finding out about a German shepherds pregnancy, but there are also surefire ways.

These ways make use of technology and is often conducted by veterinarians:

Protect Your Furniture And Floor

With the squishy, loving part out of the way, we should look at practicality. Heat cycles can be messy.

Between the excessive urination, the bloody discharge, and the antsy chewing, your house could end up a huge mess.

If you prepare now, however, you can avoid all of that, reducing your stress and your dogs.

Get some period panties for your GSD in heat. These are basically dog diapers. They are designed to catch the discharge and may even save your rug from a urination accident.

Dog diapers come in a variety of sizes, styles, and prices. There are disposables available, but if you care about the environment, look into washable fabric diapers or period garments.

A word of warning: Do not use dog diapers as a birth control method. They do not stop hormone-driven dogs from mating.

Training Goal #: Socialization

Puppies of all breeds have a critical socialization window that closes at 12 to 16 weeks of life, and your GSD puppy is no exception. In fact, for GSDs, who by nature are protective guardians, socialization is extra important so that your puppy learns which strangers are friendly and not a threat.

GSDs are very observant, and your puppy will pick up on your cues and reactions around new people and new situations. During this critical period, having exposure to many different kinds of people in non-threatening situations will help your puppy be confident among friendly strangers rather than fearful or aggressive. And even during times of social and physical distancing, you can still socialize your puppy safely.

Proper socialization cannot be overemphasized for this breed as Adams notes, The foundation for most training is confidence. It is critical that the GSD puppy is well socialized from an early age onward. Safely exposing the puppy to new sights, sounds, and smells is absolutely critical for development. Good socialization translates to confidence.

Certified dog trainer and CGC evaluator Jacqui Foster, CPDT-KA, echoes this sentiment: I tend to lean more towards developing self-confidence in the puppy. For this I recommend short, fun, three-minute games that engage the puppy with the owner as well as in noises, weird and uneven surfaces, family members, etc., throughout the day. A confident puppy is a happy puppy.

Stages To A German Shepherds Heat Cycle

What is the heat cycle in GSD? It means when a female dog is sexually mature and ready to breed. You must know that during this heat cycle your dogs body releases more hormones with quick level drops. It is a signal to the ovaries to discharge the eggs.

Typically, a GSD will be on heat twice a year, which means it may be once in 4-6 months every year. You may observe the variation from dog to dog.

How Do You Tell If A Female Gsd In Heat

Best German Shepherd Puppy Training Tips | Dog World

There are four stages in the heat cycle, and the signs that a female German shepherd is in heat depends on which stage shes currently in.

  • Proestrus: This is the stage where males are attracted to female GSDs, while the female isnt. This lasts for an average of 9 days. The most obvious sign of this stage is when male dogs start to crowd outside of your house. This is because its how male dogs react to a female in heat. They become attracted. However, your pet is likely to reject them since she still isnt susceptive to mating. Plus, fertilization isnt possible at this point.Regardless, your female dog will start to show vaginal bleeding at this stage, although the blood becomes lighter as the period progresses.
  • Estrus: The female GSD will be susceptive to mating at this stage and it can last anywhere from 4 to 21 days. This can be called the flagging stage.During the flagging stage, the dark red vaginal discharge will turn lighter. You may also notice your pet rubbing their rear end against furniture or other objects. These are indications that your female German shepherd is ready to mate. This is also the stage where mature eggs are released from the ovary.
  • Anestrus: Anestrus is the period between each heat cycle and as previously said, it lasts for about 6 months. While we mentioned this as the fourth stage, its not exactly a part of the heat cycle.Regardless, at this stage, there will be no growth and development in the female German shepherds reproductive organs.

Why Does My German Shepherd Have Webbed Feet

When referring to the breeding and bloodlines of dogs, all dogs can be sorted into two categories: pet quality and show quality.

If you purchased your German Shepherd from a breeder who actively shows with their German Shepherds, and your puppys parents were registered with the American Kennel Club, you would have a show quality dog.

If you purchased your German Shepherd from a breeder who was not showing their dogs and your puppys parents were not registered with the American Kennel Club, or they were breeding mixed breed dogs, you likely are the proud owner of a pet quality dog.

All dogs are equally amazing and important, no matter what their family tree looks like these terms are simply technical and they do not mean anything negative.

While most rescue dogs are pet quality, it is possible to rescue or adopt a show quality dog too.

German Shepherds who have webbed paws would be considered pet quality, due to the deviation from the American Kennel Clubs breed standard.

If a show quality German Shepherd breeder happens to have a puppy born into one of their litters who has webbed paws, they likely would be unable to show the dog, as he would not match the breed standard.

Therefore, they would advertise the puppy as a pet quality puppy and likely reduce the price.

Technically, there is nothing wrong with the puppy and he would make an amazing companion he simply would be disqualified from showing due to the webbing.

How Many Times A Year Can A German Shepherd Have Puppies

A German Shepherd can have puppies twice a year. Large dogs like German Shepherds go into heat around every 6 months. During their heat is when they are capable of becoming pregnant.

A normal heat cycle lasts between two and four weeks long. Thus, if you breeders or individuals who are looking to breed their GSD track their heat timing and plan to have them mate during their heat.
