What Dog Breeds Are At Risk For Elbow Dysplasia
Elbow dysplasia is most commonly found among larger breeds including Golden Retrievers, Labradors and German Shepherds. However, the condition is not breed specific and may also affect smaller dogs.
Symptoms can begin to show in dogs as young as 5 months, so its definitely worth arranging for diagnostic imaging, such as a CT scan, as soon as these signs start to appear.
The Ofa Radiographic Evaluation
Dogs have to be at least 24 months of age or older to be given this test, however, preliminary exams can be done on puppies as young as 4 months of age if an owner is interested.
This is a very well known alternative and has been available since the mid-1960s. Here’s what happens using this procedure. A veterinarian will submit an X-ray of a dog’s hip to the OFA. Three OFA veterinary radiologists, randomly selected, will then examine the X-ray.
Each of the individual OFA radiologists on the panel will grade the dogs hip X-rays on a severity scale ranging from excellent all the way down to severe.
All dogs with hips that are within normal limits are given a number that will then become a part of the overall OFA database which is also available to the public.
The PennHIP Evaluation
This is the second method used in testing for hip dysplasia. Developed in the 1980’s, this method is different from the OFA evaluation in that it applies basic engineering principles to assess the quality of the dogs hip joint. Joint laxity is determined based on this analysis.
Here too, a network of veterinarians trained to perform this process provides all the X-rays sent to the PennHIP center, where they are further evaluated.
Obviously, the main objective of any responsible selective breeding program is to maximize the pairing of good genes by breeding healthy, hip dysplasia free dogs.
Make Your Dog Comfortable
Its important to try to take measures to make your dog more comfortable. He might need rest if his hip or elbow dysplasia is causing him pain or discomfort.
Make him comfortable by getting him a comfy orthopedic bed to sleep in, which makes getting up and lying down easier. If your dog regularly slips in certain areas of the home, invest in some non-slip flooring to help him out.

If you look at the chart, you can clearly see that Germanys Fast Normal is the US standard of borderline. Borderline in the US is considered unsatisfactory for breeding and it is finalized at 2 years old. Germany however, breeds dogs with Fast Normal and the grade is given at 1 year!
Penn hip is another acceptable way of evaluating hips and I believe a better system since it is not just opinions but a scientific evaluation. They use a distraction index to measure laxity. So if we compared the dogs hips to the wheel of a car, Penn hip would look at how tightly the wheel fits on the rim. Are the bolts tight enough so that the wheel does not wobble?
Unfortunately, a dog from a good breeder can still develop hip and/or elbow dysplasia. The breeder can do everything in their power to prevent hip dysplasia and still have it develop in some puppies. The OFA website states that 20% of German Shepherds will have Hip dysplasia and another 19% will have elbow dysplasia. Buying from a reputable breeder greatly lessens your chances of having a dysplastic puppy. Plus, most back yard breeders are not going to care when you call them and tell them the puppy you bought from them has dysplasia. Most reputable breeders will offer you another puppy.

Since elbow dysplasia is an inherited condition, dogs that share similar genes are more likely to share similar inherited conditions. Individual dogs in each breed share a significant amount of their genetic make-up and so certain breeds are more vulnerable to elbow dysplasia.

How Do You Treat Elbow Dysplasia In Dogs
If your dog has developed elbow dysplasia, there are a few things you can do. First of all, its important to keep your pets weight down, as heavier animals will suffer greater discomfort. Your dog should get regular, gentle exercise short walks on a lead are best.
Try to make sure your dog doesnt overexert itself by running or jumping too much. It should also get lots of rest and recuperation after exercise.
In some cases, painkillers or anti-inflammatories may reduce discomfort. Its also possible to opt for surgery or physiotherapy in order to treat the problem, or improve the condition of the joint.

When To Grade A Dog For Dysplasia
A dog has to be at least 24 months to acquire an OFA number. The canine x-rays are done under general anesthesia to perform correct positioning of the rear legs. The dog must be microchipped during x-rays to have a unique OFA number appear in the dogs registration form.
The OFA radiologists receive the x-rays for interpretation and analysis. There will be a consensus of the three experts veterinary radiologists regarding their collective propositions.
- If two radiologists report Excellent, one Good then the final grade is Excellent
- If one radiologist reports Excellent, one Good, one Fair then the final grade is Good
- Lastly, If one radiologist reports Fair, two radiologists report Mild then the final grade is Mild
The requirements that the owners or breeders should submit to OFA are an accomplished application form, fees, and radiograph. It is vital to include the dogs AKC registration. This grade is valid for the entire life span of the dog.

So What Is Hip Dysplasia
The hip joint has evolved to be a perfect ball and socket joint, allowing the femur to rotate easily in the socket provided by the pelvis , without popping out of joint. Nowadays, however, this perfect joint is only commonly seen in wolves and racing greyhounds where the ability to run and keep on running is essential!
In hip dysplasia, the socket is too shallow for the ball, usually with abnormally sloping sides and a very small rim. This results in abnormal movement of the ball, leading to pain, arthritis and sometimes even dislocation of the joint. A voluntary scheme for grading the elbows of dogs susceptible to elbow dysplasia has been in operation in the UK since 1998 although it has been suggested that breeder uptake has been relatively low . Details of the scheme can be found at: . It is recommended that animals are not bred before two years of age and 18 months . This is so that animals selected for breeding are old enough to have revealed signs of the disease.
In this scheme, dogs are scored once when over one year old. Radiographs taken by a local veterinary surgeon are forwarded to veterinary radiologists on the scheme panel for assessment. Each elbow is graded 0-3, with zero meaning that no evidence of elbow dysplasia was seen. If the two elbows have different grades, then the higher of the two grades is the one used for the dog. The scheme recommends that dogs used for breeding should have grades of zero or one and that those with higher scores are not bred from.
No evidence has yet been published as to whether this scheme has reduced the prevalence of elbow disease in the German Shepherd dog but a comparable scheme in New Zealand seems to have done so and similar schemes, run in Sweden and Germany have led to a reduction in incidence in other breeds .
