Best Companion Dog for German Shepherd: Which Breeds Top the List?

Having a friend is important, especially for dogs. Dogs are pack animals and do best when they can socialize and hang around with other people and dogs. This article will talk about some of the best companion dogs for rottweiler.;;

This article will take a;look at the ideal temperament of the other dog and the temperament of the rottweiler so you can make an informed decision.;;

The German Shepherd And Chihuahua Temperaments

Even though German Shepherds and Chihuahuas vary significantly in size, their temperaments are similar. This is because the Chihuahua thinks he is a large breed and isnt afraid to back down from anything or anyone- including larger breeds such as a German Shepherd!;

Check out this cute video clip of a German Shepherd playing with his Chihuahua buddy and being ever so gentle:

The German Shepherd, for the most part, has a somewhat laid-back personality and can make a good first dog. However, this does not mean that he is not a dominant dog that wants to be in charge of the home.

Combined with their extreme loyalty to their owners, this aloof dog makes an excellent watchdog.;The loyalty means he will not be too keen on another dog joining the family.

The Chihuahua, on the other hand, is a stubborn dog that is lively, confident, and fun. He has a courageous attitude, which is evident from his behavior. While Chihuahuas love their owner and are snuggly and affectionate, they arent so likely to be sweet to other dogs in the home.;

Describing the Chihuahuas temperament, The Happy Puppy Site refers to them as a little dog with a big personality. They say:

Chihuahua puppies have big, confident personalities and are mostly indoor dogs. Some owners describe Chihuahuas as having an almost terrier-like temperament.

What Do We Constitute Getting Along

For the purpose of this article, I think its a good idea to clarify exactly what we mean when were talking about two different dogs getting along. Im not saying that they need to cuddle up to each other whenever they are inside and Im not saying at night theyre going to be found at the end of your bed snuggled up. It might actually be easier to communicate what we dont want to see, there are only three main points that we need to consider at this point:

  • Aggression its an obvious one but if theres any kind of aggressive tendencies between the two that continues over time, then it will most likely not work out. What you cant have is a risk of any nasty behavior cropping up when you have visitors or children in your home.
  • Possessive Personality this trait can actually be linked to aggression and is usually seen when you approach them whilst they are eating when they will growl and warn you not to come any further. Or, you may see it when you get close to their toys or indeed any of their possessions . If you didnt see this behavior before you had both the dogs but do after, it can be cause for concern.
  • Sadness some dogs like to be the center of attention and if you bring a new one into the home then it may cause problems with the mental state of the existing one. They may experience jealousy, or maybe a canine version of it that is similar to what we can experience.

The Australian Shepherd Was Not Bred In Australia

Do German Shepherds and Labradors Get Along?

The name of the Australian Shepherd is quite deceiving because their history isnt heavily associated with Australia at all. They were initially bred in the Wild West of North America. They worked with farmers, ranchers, and cowboys to herd cattle and other livestock across the prairie.

The only reason that Australian Shepherds have the Australian in their name is because of their original parentage. They were bred with other dogs, like Basque Shepherds. These dogs came from Australia to the U.S. in the 1800s. They were heavily associated with their home country. Thus, their hybrid dogs became associated with Australia as well, without ever having seen those shores.

German Shepherd History With Other Dogs

Are German Shepherds good with other dogs throughout history? This breed has a rich history starting out in Germany.

Here, their creator, Max von Stephanitz bred them in an attempt to create the ultimate herding dog.

Their initial purpose of herding and guarding livestock slowly changed to a working role as a police and military dog. To do well here, the GSD needed to be a brave, alert, and intelligent breed.

This is one reason that many people may see the German Shepherd as an aggressive dog.

But, today, alongside these roles, the GSD is also found as a guide dog, a loving family companion, a protection dog, and even a working dog in roles like search and rescue.

Exercise For German Shepherds Vs Smaller Dogs

German Shepherds are highly energetic dogs who need a lot of exercise. Your new tiny furry friend might not need a lot of movement, but a German Shepherd craves it.;

Typically, GSDs need at least 45 minutes of exercise a day. German Shepherds are workhorses. They were bred for herding sheep and yearn to be on the move.;

A smaller breed or a puppy might need less than 30 minutes of exercise a day, and less overall stimulation.

Without enough exercise, German Shepherds might use that pent up energy in undesirable ways. Add a small dog into the picture, and that could be a dangerous situation.

Is Husky A Wolf

Although wolf-like in appearance, huskies are no more closely related to wolves than poodles and bulldogs are. While theyre all dogs, some huskies may be crossed with wolves, producing a wolf hybrid. Thats an entirely different animal from a purebred Siberian husky or its cousin, the Alaskan Malamute.

German Shepherds Are Working Dogs

Do German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers Really Get Along That Well?

You could argue that German Shepherds are the worlds best working dogs. They are extremely versatile, intelligent, trainable and they are eager to follow commands. Their desire to obey commands and fulfill a role is fundamental to their health and happiness. They must frequently partake in training exercises and need A LOT of mental stimulation to keep their clever minds ticking over. There are other breeds who are the complete opposite of this. Some breeds like Bassett hounds or English bulldogs, for example, would rather lay down and ignore you . A lazy breed wouldnt exactly get in the way of your German Shepherd, but its not likely to enhance his life in any way. Your German Shepherd would thrive having another buddy that enjoys being active following commands just like they are. So thats something important to consider.

From dog sports like rally, agility, or scent work to therapy work to guide dog work, German Shepherds can do it all. The only thing holding your dog back is the time and energy you can commit to training. Its no wonder people always think your dog is a service or police dog.

German Shepherd Dogs Are Protective Of Their Loved Ones

They are known for being fearless and self-confident. GSDs will assertively stand their ground and are suited to be either watchdog or guardian, whichever the situation demands. They can be aloof with strangers yet are not hostile. This natural protective instinct is reassuring to the German Shepherd owner. But it also comes with a certain responsibility. You should be committed to spending time socializing and training your dog to ensure your companion feels comfortable around strangers and other dogs. If you do, you will benefit from all this dog has to offer.

How Do You Deter Aggression In A German Shepherd

Some German Shepherds will show aggression to other dogs despite your best efforts. Wag! recommends several helpful methods.

One of the best ways to ensure the success of methods of curb aggression is to make sure each dog has a safe place, like a crate, of their own. Crates provide a place to eat and sleep, as well as a place of safety and calming after tension.

Make sure you have a spray bottle filled with water. If any growling, barking, or aggressive posturing occurs, give the dog a spray of water. This simple action will teach the dog to associate acting out with negative consequences.

Another option is a remote-controlled spray collar filled with citronella oil. Making sure the dog gets a squirt each time they act aggressively also teaches the GSD that bad behavior comes with negative consequences.

Avoid allowing aggressive play that gets dogs needlessly worked up, which can lead to further acting out. Never treat aggressive behavior like its a joke. Doing so could have regrettable consequences.
