Where Do Long Haired German Shepherds Come From
Historically, German Shepherds originated in Germany and were native sheepdogs. In 1899, a dog club called the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde e.V. was founded by Captain Max von Stephanitz. He firmly believed that the standard of the German Shepherd breed should not include dogs with long hair. Throughout the 1900s, long haired German Shepherds were considered unsuitable and unacceptable for breeding. It wasnt until this past decade, when the SV and FCI approved the change in conformation standards, that long coat German Shepherds became officially accepted into club breeding standards.

Grooming & Living Conditions
Long haired Shepherds shed a lot all year round. Molting will also occur three weeks before fall or three weeks before spring. They are notoriously nightmares to groom as their coats tend to clump and mat a lot of patience is needed to groom these dogs. Youll need the perfect brush, a metal brush with lengthy teeth is preferred to get deep into the coat, and a pin brush is recommended to keep your pups coat shiny and clean.
Brushing daily for several minutes will prevent knots in the future. Be prepared to vacuum frequently to keep your surroundings clean, and always have a lint roller nearby to clean yourself before leaving the house. Due to German Shepherds being large, powerful, and possessing strong guarding instincts, great care should be exercised when purchasing them. Poorly bred dogs are more likely to exhibit anxiety and nervousness.
To prevent over guarding behavior, its best to socialize them at an early age as well as have extensive obedience classes. While with the family, they should be exposed to different elements, including loud noises and children. They like to be active and can get bored easily, so ample exercise is necessary to keep them engaged.
Long haired Shepherds should be kept indoors due to their large coats that can be matted easily. Theyre best kept inside to prevent overheating in the summer and frostbite in the winter.
What Is A Long Coat German Shepherd
For most people it’s probably fairly easy to determine what a long coat German Shepherd is – it simply refers to the length of their fur.
Whilst a “standard” German Shepherd will traditionally have short fur, long coats are the result of a recessive gene that any dog can carry.
It doesn’t mean long coats have any problems – far from it, and for many people they are an even more desirable dog than the standard breed German Shepherd.
Long haired German Shepherds look incredibly handsome, and if you’re happy with the additional effort required in grooming them and keeping their hair in good condition then they’re as loyal and obedient as any other German Shepherd.

Fluffy German Shepherd Origins
Its unclear how the original long-haired Shepherd came about, but as mentioned their more modern origins come from the Wuttermburg region of Germany. Wuttermberg is mountainous and located close to Switzerland, making it a colder part of Germany despite being more south.
These long coats were likely evolved and considered advantageous to protect them from below zero temperatures. The gene is deemed to be recessive in all modern Shepherds, being found in approximately 10% of the breed.

Should I Trim My Long Haired German Shepherd’s Coat
The decision to trim a long haired German Shepherd comes down to personal preference, but it is not a necessity. Trimming can help make for more manageable living around the house. If you choose to trim, you can trim around the backs of the ears, on the back of the legs and then thin the bushy tail.
Shaving a German Shepherd on the other hand is never recommended. Their double coats help keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

What Is Their Temperament Like
There is no discernible difference between the temperament of a long coat German Shepherd and a normal short coat dog.
For a long time they’ve been unfairly labelled as being difficult, but sadly this really stems from them not being accepted due to falling outside the normal breeding standard.
Long haired German Shepherds we’ve raised here at Regis Regal have gone on to be used as search dogs, rescue dogs, police dogs and therapy dogs. There’s no reason long coats can’t perform as well or better than short coats – and they do look quite incredible at the same time!
Coat & Colors In Competition
Color during competition does matter when showing off your dog. Multiple colors arent allowed in most competitions including pure white, solid blue, fawn, pure red and spotted black and white as previously mentioned. Some colors such as gray, liver, light blue, and panda are deemed faulty by major kennels, but not always.
The long-haired variant has had a long history of being banned and reinstated. If you want to show off your long-haired beauty, it better have an undercoat, or else they wont be accepted. Black and tan, black and cream, black and silver, red and black, black and red, black, sable, dark sable, black sable, and bi-color/bi-black are all accepted color variants, so finding the proper color is the least of your worries.
Although the German Shepherd breed has a long track record of competition wins, the long-haired variant is out of luck when it comes to frequent wins, or wins at all. The banning of the long-haired variety has made it difficult for them to be recognized.
They are often overlooked at dog shows in favor of the classic breed look: black and cream. This doesnt mean that these dogs are bad in competition. It is more likely that the association with the breed is stronger with the tan or sable color scheme. If you want a show dog, I would recommend passing up the long-haired variant. You should only be looking for the short to medium haired version.

Long Haired German Shepherds
The rarity of the long hair arises from the recessive gene that was meant to be bred out of the bread entirely. Previously considered an unfortunate consequence of inbreeding, the coat can now be found from selective mating and attention to parenting. The origins of the long-haired variant march in line with their typical, short-haired cousins.
Von Stephanitz stated that long silky hair was often associated with a refined head and often had no undercoat. This would cause the part along the back of the breed to form pockets of moisture when it rained, which led to drenched skin. The long silky or shaggy hair was also likely to mat, get frozen during winter, and get hard with dirt if not properly taken care of.
He viewed long hair too much trouble for what its worth. If it was possible to breed long hair out of the Shepherd or to actively breed their short to medium hair counter-part this would be preferred as long hair lacked the density and protection from all elements.
A balance would be necessary for the coat of the average Shepherd, as coats must be judged simply from the point of view of serviceability because otherwise such dogs are not of importance for the breed. The focus was more on the undercoats protection and the length as the medium-haired German Shepherds were easier to take care of and therefore made better working dogs. These pups are not to be confused with GSD mixes like the GSD/Husky.
How Much Does A Long Coat German Shepherd Cost
Whilst a long coat can be a far more desirable dog for some people, when it comes to price they can actually work out around the same price, or even cheaper, than a standard German Shepherd. This is because a long haired dog can’t be registered with the AKC as they’re not considered true to the standard breed.
The dogs we breed and train here at Regis Regal come from some of the best bloodlines in the world, and so whilst the dogs we have won’t be the cheapest, we feel very confident that you will struggle to find a better dog.

How Rare Are Long Haired German Shepherds
Genetically in German Shepherds, the short hair gene is dominant and the long hair gene is recessive. This means if two short haired German Shepherds are mated, but neither carries the recessive long hair gene, then no long haired puppies can be produced. However, if two short haired German Shepherds are mated and both carry the recessive gene, then long haired puppies can be produced.

Removing Long Coats From Breeding
The Breed Survey Scheme in Germany in 1922 removed the rough-coated and shaggy-coated Shepherds out of the breeding pool due to specific instructions from von Stephanitz. However, long coats with an undercoat were still allowed to be surveyed and exhibited at shows.
A specific date for when they were banned entirely from showing isnt written down but, they were actively being bred out and determined unacceptable for breeding around the 1970s. This ban continued until recently. There are other breeds that also have this recessive trait, and its also bred out of these breeding lines as well.

Only True Long Coat King Size German Shepherds In North America
Long Coat vs Short Coat German Shepherd ?
Long Coat German Shepherds differ in their breeding from regular German shepherds in being more laid back, calmer, less energy and easy going. In general these gentle giants have better temperaments than what is encountered in the typical Short Coat German Shepherd as they are not aggressive and yet still very protective.
Curiously, a Long Coat is considered to be a “fault” when judging dogs in the show ring. As a result, most breeders and including Best Shepherds, breed for good “temperament”, a nice personality, large size and soft coats. Probably as the result of their history of less inbreeding, the Long Hair Shepherds tend to have straighter backs and are less likely to develop “hip displacement” problems.
The Long Coat German Shepherd represents what the Old World Shepherds looked like, unlike “the modern dog show version”. Believe it or not, the Long Coat Shepherds actually shed a lot less, except when Spring comes and they “blow off their coatsâ.
