  • Move your hand calmly and slowly from your puppy.
  • Show them what they can chew, instead, such as their favorite chew toy.
  • Have plenty safe chew toys to grab nearby to give your pup when they get wild and decide to bite you.
  • Dont participate in rough play using your hands, as this encourages nipping and biting.
  • Always use toys that your puppy can chew and bite to play with pick from this list of German Shepherd Chew Toys to Prevent Boredom so you have a safe puppy toy that can take their bites.

This teaches your pup you dont like biting and nipping while offering them a positive alternative.

During play, work on the signal easy when your pup plays too rough. When they stop biting or nipping reward them with verbal praise and pets.

If they are still too rough, use a toy to show them whats acceptable to bite or remove yourself from playing for a few minutes. Return later to try playing with your pup again and repeat the procedure.

Teach Your German Shepherd Target Training

Teach your German Shepherd to ask for treats! Here I use the word treats loosely. Whether it is a cuddle, a pat, attention, or something tasty, you must teach your pup target training, for example, teaching him to touch a target with a specific part of his body, such as his paw or nose. Remember that your German Shepherd may end up biting or clawing to communicate if you do not teach him more acceptable communication methods.

I recommend teaching your German Shepherd to use his nose to touch your hand. While youll actively encourage him by holding out your hand, hell quickly learn to touch your hand with his nose gently. This is a fantastic bite substitute! Hand targeting is a fun way to train your dog to trust you while also getting him to use his brain!

Your 8 Week Old German Shepherd

At 8 weeks old, its your job to introduce your puppy to a whole new world, and help her grow up to be a happy and healthy member of your family.

This article is designed to help you along your way.

Well help you understand why your 8-week-old German Shepherd puppy does what she does, and how best to handle the typical challenges of raising a young German Shepherd.

Don’t Miss: German Shepherd Puppy Tips

Are German Shepherd Puppies Easy To Train

German Shepherds are usually adopted around eight weeks, but they are not yet completely grown, socialized, or trained. If youve recently adopted a puppy, you may be intimidated by the idea of dog training, and more significantly, you may be curious about how easy or challenging German Shepherds are to train.

German Shepherd puppies are easy to train because of their intelligence. They yearn to show their owner loyalty and have an overwhelming desire to please. They can understand simple commands in the first few weeks. However, more complex training is usually delayed until 6 months of age.

Im assuming you adopted the puppy when it was young enough to begin training at the appropriate age. But dont worry if youre a little late to the party or bring home an older puppy or a rescue dog just keep in mind that obedience training your German Shepherd may take a little longer.

Meet Their Energy Needs

German shepherd puppy 3 1/2 months

The right exercise is part of any training for your one year old German Shepherd.

Burn those massive energy reserves that seem to be built into every young German Shepherd.

Walk your dog at least 45 minutes to 1 hour twice a day. But know that even this amount of exercise is generally too little for a German Shepherd.

Check with your vet to ensure your dogs bones are fused before continuing with high-impact sports, such as running or agility. If your dogs bones arent fused and you do these exercises you could damage their joints for life, so its best to stay away from high-impact exercise until they are at least 18 months old.

Some good, healthy exercises for a German Shepherd include tossing a ball for fetch, tug and swimming.

You could also start to train your pet for nose work and tracking for fun and competition.

One-year-old German Shepherds have a lot of energy.

So, its best to include exercise before training sessions to improve their focus.

Your one year old dog also needs time to chew on appropriate toys to help release their stress and provide them with an outlet for their energy. Provide a tough German Shepherd chew toy that helps keep them calm.

Its best to provide plenty of chew toys and treats for your German Shepherd, rather than have them find their own things to chew in your house.

Initiate Your Dog To Being Handled Gently

Dogs are great at giving and receiving caresses and hugs. But they also have to handle grooming which can feel uncomfortable. Your German Shepherd puppy can learn to handle this uneasiness if taught to take it when young.

You can do this by gently handling your pups ears, paws, ears, and coat. You can find out more about whether German Shepherds like to be petted in this article.

Out For A Walk: Teaching Your Puppy Not To Pull On The Leash

There are many things that tempt your dog when youre out for a walk, like new smells and other animals. Your dog will try to get where he wants to go, even if that means pulling you along with him! If he pulls on the leash and you allow him to, youve reinforced him for pulling, and your pup got what he wanted. Once youve allowed him to do this, hell do it again. AKC’s, Mary Burch, Ph.D., offers the following 2 techniques:

Technique #1

  • When Fido starts to pull on the leash, stop in your tracks. Stand still and dont move forward with the dog.
  • Wait right there where you are. Your pup will pull, but hell eventually stop.
  • When he does stop pulling, praise him and move forward again.
  • Anytime he starts to pull, repeat the procedure and stop where you are. It wont take him too long to figure out that youre not going anywhere as long as he pulls on the leash.

Technique #2

  • When your pup begins to pull off in his own direction, briskly turn around and begin walking in the opposite direction. Fido will have to come along, and most likely hell hurry up to keep up with you.
  • When Fido begins to follow in the direction you are walking, praise him. If youre at the beginning stages of training your pup, give him a treat. This will train your dog to watch you when youre out for a walk and not pull on the leash.

How Long Will I Have To Train My German Shepherd Daily

Be prepared to train your German Shepherd for at least 10 to 15 minutes a day. You should practice basic obedience training, but also include fun training games to keep them interested in their training and engaged with you.

Youll want to break up the 10 to 15 minutes throughout the day to make sure your German Shepherd doesnt get bored of the same routine commands.

Aim for five three-minute sessions daily in the beginning, as a minimum.

There are exceptions to this rule since your GSD is a working breed and some GSDs will enjoy training for longer. But start with no more than a few minutes in a short session and gradually build onto each individual session longer times.

During each session work on just one or two commands so that your dog learns the right way to perform the command. You can add in another command they know if theyre struggling to pay attention and keep the session positive and interesting.

Then youll enjoy these fun German Shepherd games for obedience training to help your dog stay active, alert, and ready for their daily sessions.

Training Your German Shepherd Puppy Young: Its Easy And Possible

Dog Training: 10 Month Old German Shepherd, Griffin- Before/After Two Week Board and Train

The rule of thumb is that you train them young when dog training. This does not imply that you cannot teach adult dogs it simply means that the success philosophy of bending the tree while still young applies.

In fact, the German Shepherd Dog Club of America indicates that the first 2-6 months are essential in laying the foundation for a German Shepherd puppy to integrate into the family.

All this means is that when you bring your German Shepherd puppy home at eight weeks , the dog has most likely interacted with few realities and is fresh enough to learn and follow the rules of a new home.

The truth that young puppies learn quickly has been scientifically proven. A study with 8-week-old puppies found that they easily learned to open a puzzle box motivated with food and retained the skill. Surprisingly, these puppies learned the skill better from a conspecific than they did from their mother.

Other studies have also proven that its significant to train puppies instead of older dogs for future behavior. In this study, puppies who attended a command and socialization training class for one hour daily in six months showed better behavior towards strangers than adult dogs attending the same classes.

Apart from the age factor, other breed-specific reasons make training a German Shepherd puppy easy and possible. Here are 3 of those reasons:

What Is Obedience Training And Why Your Dog Needs It

The sole purpose of obedience training is to teach your German Shepherd how to act at home and in social settings.

Socializing, house training, and basic sit, stay, and recall commands will fall into this category.

Obedience training is essential to avoid the development of behavior problems early on. It’s also the only way to fix bad habits and behavior that have already developed.

German Shepherd Training Books

If youve decided to train your German Shepherd dog on your own, youll want a little bit of guidance. This is where training books come in. Dog training isnt always breed-specific, yet there are some things you may need to take into consideration when training your German Shepherd.

Training books geared toward the specific needs of German Shepherds can be an invaluable tool when training your dog. Some good examples are the German Shepherd Owners Guide: From Pup to Pal and the German Shepherd Handbook.

You can consult your breeder, local GSD club, or veterinarian for recommendations.

However, there are also a few good books online that may prove helpful, such as:

How To Housebreak A German Shepherd Puppy

Its important to start house training your German Shepherd puppy as soon as possible! If youre lucky, your GSDs breeder may have already begun the house training process before you even take your pup home. But, this isnt always the case.

Because German Shepherds puppies have tiny bladders, its important to be realistic about how long they can last without a potty break. So, follow the hour-per-month rule. If your puppy is one month old, they can hold it for one hour. If they are three months old, they should be able to hold it for three hours etc. .

Here are some tips to housebreaking a German Shepherd puppy:

Can You Still Train A 1 2 3 4 5 Or Even A 6

Say hi to Ramzey. 2 month old German shepherd http://ift ...

You can still train a 1-year-old German Shepherd. You can also still train a 2, 3, 4, 5, or even a 6-Year-Old German Shepherd. All German Shepherds are very intelligent and are highly trainable, no matter what their age. They are receptive, eager to learn, and have an immense desire to please you.

To train a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6-year-old German Shepherd, start by exercising the dog first to get rid of some energy. That way, they are likely to be more attentive. Treat the dog as a puppy and start with basic commands. Use high-level treats for rewards, especially if the dog is food-motivated.

What To Expect From A New Puppy

Raising any puppy has its overwhelming moments, and German Shepherd puppies are no exception!

After a few nights of interrupted sleep, potty-training mishaps, and that puppy penchant for destruction, you may feel like youre at the end of your rope.

This is completely normal. Every new puppy owner has their moments of frustration and doubt.

Remember that your 8-week-old German Shepherd puppy is going through a big life change, too.

She may be feeling stressed and out of sorts when you first bring her home. Consistency and structure will go a long way toward helping both of you.

German Shepherd Potty Training Aids

The are several commercial items available to help you potty train your German shepherd dog. The following are my recommendations:

  • To clean urine the BEST products are called Enzymatic cleaners. Regular cleaning products may take away the urine scent -you- smell but they will not remove the scent your dog smells. Enzymatic cleaners do that, they break down urine molecules to make them easy to remove. This will prevent your pet from returning to the same, incorrect, spot.
  • Puppy pads are very popular because they are less messy than news paper. However, if you put a puppy pad and leave you puppy alone with it, you will find it in shreds! You must teach your puppy to use the puppy pads, not to chew on them.
  • To do this, put the puppy pad on the floor and interrupt your puppy if he tries to play with it. Exchange for another toy and reward for not grabbing the pad with his mouth . Repeat until he learns this!
  • If you have a backyard, a doggy-door is an excellent way to give your pup access to the outdoors without your help.
  • You must teach him how to use it! Use a treat to lure him through the door many times until he can do it on his own! Then, every-time you take him outside, make him go though the door on his own.
  • I do not recommend any “Not Here” or “Yes Here” type sprays. They don’t work very well, specially without any training…and when you are training…you don’t need these products!

How We Build This Programme: Push Drop Stick

Watch our 2 month old Female German Shepherd Puppy as she demonstrates Obedience and Play

Heres a good resource for you to have the Push Drop Stick game. I like to use this game to see whether puppies are ready to move on in their training, or if they need to spend more practice runs.

Did we need to remind you how intelligent German Shepherds are? Make sure to keep them stimulated by progressively making their exercises more challenging. They really do need to be given a job to do rather than allowing them to be self-employedwho knows how that can end up.

What is Push, Drop, Stick?

Push, Drop, Stick, is a way of systematically raising the difficulty of an exercise or behaviour.

If exercises are always kept too easy, then dogs will keep doing them correctly because they are being rewarded . However, progress will be slower as theyll get stuck at this level.

If lessons are too hard, then its likely that theyll give up since treats wont be coming as easy. Looks like theyd be quite good businessmen as humans.

Push Drop Stick can help avoid both scenarios by maintaining enough momentum: It will keep your puppy winning enough times to keep them interested and not quit, but not so much that they arent thinking about how to be rewarded by trying harder.

How does it work?

Push Go to the next level of difficulty

Drop Back to the previous level of difficulty

Stick Stay at the current level of difficulty

3 or 4 out of 5 Do another set of 5 at this difficulty He doesnt need you to drop, but he isnt quite ready to be pushed yet.

How To Begin Potty Training

Developing a litter plan for your GSD is essential and should start from day one.

  • Little pups can be trained to live in a crate at night so that they do not contaminate the home.
  • If you hear your puppy cry or whimper, know that it wants to defecate.
  • Take the little pup outdoors at night time before it sleeps and again in the morning as you wake up.
  • When you feed your GSD, take it outdoors after 20 minutes because this is the time when your GSD will need to defecate.
  • Do not let your GSD potty in different areas every time but make sure that it poops in its designated area. This practice will help your dog learn that it cannot potty everywhere it wants.
  • You can also make use of small treats or toys when your GSD poops in its designated area.
  • Command your GSD to go potty.
  • You will need to be consistent with the timings and the routine. Make sure you take it outdoors after every meal so that it learns its potty timings.
  • Do not leave it all on your GSD until it truly learns its timings and routine or youll end up cleaning lots of waste.
  • Staying alert and keeping your eyes open while training your pup will help a lot.
