When My German Shepherd Is In Heat How Do I Console Her

When a female German shepherd is in heat, she is likely to change her personality. As a result, we should always be aware of our pets movements.

For your girl, while in the heat for the very first instance can be a frightening experience. Shell need more time and support.

Set down some additional space for loads of snuggles because puppies appear to get very cuddly throughout that period.

  • Try getting a lap desk because then you can function and cuddle at the same time.
  • Provide a healthy, chew-resistant toy for her to nudge. This, too, will give you a sense of safety.
  • When your dog makes a bloody mess, never scold her instead, gently comfort her as you clean this up.
  • Make sure shes getting more than enough food and water.
  • Prepare yourself for more potty trips because a bunch is happening down there now, and she will need to release herself very often.

If shes agitated, you can get her calm by playing with her, brushing her hair, or the fun things she usually enjoys that involve movement.

How Long Do Female German Shepherds Bleed

Heat usually lasts between 2-4 weeks. Early in the cycle, a female dog may not be receptive to male dogs, although some are receptive through the entire cycle. How Long Has A German Shepherd Been In The Heat

When Do German Shepherds Go Into Heat

When you know that your German Shepherd is in heat now, you must know the duration of this entire cycle in the pet. On average, your female GSD will last four weeks in heat, ready to reproduce and have the babies. If you have no plans to give your pet to breed, you have to take care of it in all this feverish time.

It is very good that you keep track of the days when your female GSD is in heat and when not to protect him. You can be guided by some changes in attitude that the dog has throughout the hot cycle. The rutting time in the GSD is the same for all breeds, although it can be shortened on some occasions.

As your female GSD grows, her time in heat may decrease to approximately three weeks. In some irregular cases, the GSD may lose heat much earlier, long before it is up, but this is common. If you see other irregularities in your pet in its heat cycle, you can go to a veterinarian in your city.

When Do Female German Shepherds Go Into Heat Cycle

Just like most female animals, female German Shepherds experience heat cycles. This is the stage in your female dogs life where its reproductive hormones start acting up. If you are a first-time dog owner or you have no experience with female German Shepherds, then it could get a little tricky for your dog during this period. However, with a little bit of help, you can understand your dog better and help it navigate this stage in its life seamlessly.

Why Should I Spay My Dog

Leaving the toll aside, giving your dog litter and raising children, and allowing the number of homeless animals to be euthanized each year, will allow your dog to coexist irresponsibly.

Although many people have heard, there are health benefits to allowing litter in front of the dog. Spade, this belief has not been proven. In fact, the difficulty of giving birth and raising children can lead to premature aging and in some cases death.

It has also been shown that dogs exposed before the first heat cycle have a much lower risk of developing mammary gland tumors.

Are Male Or Female Gsds Less Aggressive

Research shows that males German Shepherds are more aggressive than female German Shepherds.

This means that a family should consider choosing a female for a companion over a male. Males tend to perform better for roles in protection and guarding and could do well in a home without children and the proper training.

Protect Your Furniture And Floor

With the squishy, loving part out of the way, we should look at practicality. Heat cycles can be messy.

Between the excessive urination, the bloody discharge, and the antsy chewing, your house could end up a huge mess.

If you prepare now, however, you can avoid all of that, reducing your stress and your dogs.

Get some period panties for your GSD in heat. These are basically dog diapers. They are designed to catch the discharge and may even save your rug from a urination accident.

Dog diapers come in a variety of sizes, styles, and prices. There are disposables available, but if you care about the environment, look into washable fabric diapers or period garments.

Stages Of The German Shepherds Heat Cycle

How Often Do Belgian Malinois Go Into Heat: Learn ...

It is so very important to know when your Shepherd is coming into heat and going out of heat. Some of the signs are clear and there are some subtle clues. Pay attention to your own female and learn her behavior. This will help in understanding whats going on when she does come into heat.

Proestrus Stage for German Shepherds

This stage of the female heat cycle can last from 4-20 days. The average is usually 7-10 days. There are 4 common signs for a German Shepherd in heat during this stage:

  • Swollen Vulva: This is one of the better ways to spot the start of a German Shepherd heat cycle. Her vulva may become 3-4 times its regular size. You will notice the swelling is a significant difference over the normal appearance of her vulva. Her teats may also swell slightly, but this can be tricky to spot.
  • Discharge: Your female German Shepherd may begin spending a lot of time licking to clean herself. German Shepherds are quite good at keeping themselves clean. If in doubt about the discharge, take a tissue and wipe her vulva. If you notice red discharge, and her vulva is swollen, that is a pretty good indicator that she is definitely coming into heat. It is important to check for this, because timing is everything when it comes to a pregnancy. The first day you notice the bloody discharge is DAY 1. It is best to mark it on your calendar or make sure to remember.

Training Differences In Male And Female German Shepherds

German Shepherds are one of the smartest dog breeds to own.

They are highly intelligent and have a natural curiosity to learn new commands and behaviors.

German Shepherds are ready for you to train them daily and are easier to train compared to many other dog breeds.

Males can also become more dominant, especially as they mature, and may become difficult for you to train. While females tend to want to appease their owners more readily and are better suited to a new owner.

How Old Does A German Shepherd Need To Be To Breed

When I bred my first female German Shepherd, I did not breed her before she had her third season. After talking to the Breeder that I purchased my dog from, he told me to wait until your dog has had her fourth season before you breed her, but she should be three years old or older before she is bred. He has experience breeding a female too young and its a risk because some female will not want to take care of her puppies because shes too immature and then he would have to bottle feed all the pups to save the letter, and thats a lot of work and time youll spend taking care of puppies.

    Just in case youre wondering

Male German Shepherds can be bred at 18 months up throughout their lives, but its not being bred they can become sterile as they ages.

Signs That Your Female Gsd Is Aggressive Due To Her Heat Cycle

If two or more of the following apply to your German Shepherd, then sexual aggression is likely to contribute to the problem. If your dog has gone in heat twice already, spaying is not recommended, and you can use other strategies to neutralize her aggression.

Your Dog is Significantly Older Than Six-Months of Age

German Shepherds go into heat for the first time from six months to 12 months of age. Before this, they arent sexually mature enough for their reproductive hormones to contribute significantly to any behavior. But if your dog is older than six months, you cannot rule out sexual frustration as a part of the problem.

    Your Dog Pees a Lot

Female German Shepherds urinate a lot more when they ovulate. This is often accompanied by other urine-related behaviors, including but not limited to:

    • Sniffing male dogs urine.
    • Licking urine .
    • General indifference to soaking in their own urine.

Your Dog Grooms Her Sexual Region

If your German Shepherd constantly licks her vaginal area, then sexual frustration is apparent. She might not hump things or get visibly excited upon being touched, but that does not mean she isnt going through a phase of sexual aggression. It can be challenging to see this if your dog barely socializes with other dogs. The dynamic between your German Shepherd and other dogs will make it clearer that shes in heat.

    Theres Vaginal Discharge

I Found My Dog Tied To A Female Dog During A Mismating Was There Anything I Could Do To Separate Them

Is my female German Shepherd in heat?

There is little point in trying to separate animals that are locked together in this way. Buckets of cold water, water pistols, cap guns, and so forth do little to speed up the process of separation and merely upset or potentially injure the dogs. In fact, forced separation can result in serious injury to the female and should be avoided.

If a mismating has occurred, discuss it with your veterinarian as soon as possible so your options can be reviewed.

    Is This A Lifetime Thing

Once estrus begins, it may take awhile for the cycle to become regular. Some dogs can take up to eighteen months until their cycle becomes regular. Its a good idea to keep a record during these early days. Once it does, the average is about every six months. Smaller breeds may go into heat more frequently, as often as 3-4 times a year. Larger dogs, like Irish Wolfhounds, St. Bernards and Great Danes may only go into heat every 12-18 months. Unlike humans, female dogs experience estrus throughout their lives, although the time between cycles will get longer.

With the exception of breeders of purebreds, most pet owners elect to spay their female dogs before the first heat. Some experts believe this reduces the risk of mammary cancer and other conditions. It also eliminates the possibility of unwanted litters.

Are There Any Tests To Determine When To Mate My Dog

Yes. There are two simple tests that your veterinarian can perform:

    1. Vaginal cytology or vaginal smears. A simple microscopic examination of vaginal cells will detect changes in cell appearance and numbers. This technique has been used for many years and is reasonably reliable. It is non-invasive and does not cause discomfort for the female. Most vaginal smears are performed over several days, to look for changes in the cells that predict ovulation and the best time for breeding.

    2. Serum progesterone test. This measures the progesterone level in the blood. This test is very sensitive and has become popular due to its accuracy. Some pets will require several tests done over a series of days to predict ovulation. Some veterinarians prefer another daily blood hormone test, LH instead of serum progesterone. Your veterinarian will discuss the different testing options and what is best for your pet.

“The serum progesterone test gives a very good indication of when mating is most likely to be successful.”

Your veterinarian may be able to perform both tests at the veterinary practice, though sending samples out to a laboratory gives a more accurate result. The serum progesterone test gives a very good indication of when mating is most likely to be successful and is useful for females that have a history of unsuccessful mating or if the dog will be traveling a considerable distance to the male dog.

    What Does In Heat Mean

When a dog is in heat, it means that they are going through their natural menstrual cycle. This period of time is often referred to as the estrus, as it indicates when estrogen levels rise and the female is ready to mate with males. Other common nicknames include in season, dog period, or any other creative names you can think of!

Unlike a human menstrual cycle that lasts between 5-7 days, a dog will be in heat for around 2-4 weeks. The whole cycle itself is a long and drawn-out process that only occurs twice a year.

In most cases, a female dog can enter her first heat cycle at 6-9 months old. Some might even be a year old before they are first in heat. It mostly depends on the size of the dog, as some will inevitably be much larger than others. They will enter their first heat cycle when they reach sexual maturity.

While the heat cycle is a natural process, there is a safe way to eradicate the fuss about the cycle if you dont want your dog to procreate. This is called spaying. When a dog has been spayed, her reproductive organs have been removed, so she can no longer reproduce, which stops the heat cycle forever.
