What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?
When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

Located in Durham, North Carolina, the German Shepherd Rescue & Adoption, Inc. is one of the most prolific GSD rescue organizations of its kind. As a member of the Grey Muzzle Organization, which seeks to help older dogs find loving homes, this rescue focuses on helping dogs in the senior age categories. This is important because a lot of rescues, shelters, and humane societies wont accept older dogs because they are harder to adopt out.
Their website lists lower than average adoption fees. In some cases, you can adopt a dog for less than $100.00. As a 501-C Non-Profit Organization, the German Shepherd Rescue and Adoptions is officially registered and has been in operation for 28 years. Although there may be longer wait times due to Covid-19, the German Shepherd Rescue and Adoptions is currently accepting inquiries and applications.

Carolina Animal Rescue & Adoption rescues a wide variety of breeds, not just German Shepherds, but they move a lot of dogs through their rescue.

The Holly Fund is a unique fund that exists to help animals with serious, but curable medical conditions.
Diseases like heartworm, limbs that need amputation, severe skin diseases, are treated using this fund.
It was named for a little dog named Holly who had severe medical issues that usually could have caused it to be euthanized.
Instead, the dog was saved. The fund is used to save dogs like Holly.

Adoption fees are reasonable, generally only $155 per dog.
Applications are typically processed within 48 hours.
Animals in your own home must be spayed or neutered and in some cases you will need to have special requirements met in order to adopt particular dogs.

Southeast German Shepherd Rescue
As a rescue focused on the Carolinas and Virginia, the Southeast German Shepherd Rescue offers rehabilitation and rehoming services, as well, for this unique dog breed. With a combined over 30 years experience in German Shepherds, the team at Southeast German Shepherd Rescue trains all its new families on how to properly train and nurture its shepherds.

If you arent interested in fostering or adopting, you can still support the organization as one of its Coordinators, whose task is to outreach new and prospective pet owners and families.
Its quite a long process to rescue to adopt a German Shepherd. It typically takes 6 to 8 weeks to process an application form. Next, you have to go through a phone interview. If all goes well, then you will have a 2 week trial period with the dog which helps to verify that the dog is a good fit for your family. Our dogs and puppies health is of the utmost importance. We have had our dogs tested by Embark for their breed and health. They are also examined and given their yearly shots, heartworm medicine and flea preventatives by our Board certified Veterinarian.
When our puppies are 6 to 7 weeks old, they are taken to a licensed veterinarian for a full check up and first vaccines with worming.
We feed our shepherds a top of the line food made with real chicken or lamb with no corn, wheat or by products. This ensures their skin, coats and total health are the best we can provide for a happy healthy dog.
