Helps With Potty Training
Using a crate to potty train your puppy is a quicker way than other methods. Puppies naturally do not like to pee or poop where they sleep and will tend to hold it. Its also another reason to use a crate divider. If the crate is too big, the puppy may feel there is enough space to potty at the far end. You dont want him to treat the crate like the yard where he poops at one end and rests at the other.
Measure Your Dogs Width:
As with door height & width, its a good idea to add an inch or two for an allowance. That way, you wont need to install a larger door if your dog gains a few pounds! Now that you know your dogs height and width, its time to determine the appropriate dog door size.
The Pros And Cons Of Crating Your German Shepherd

Is Big Always Best
If crates come in such huge sizes, why not just get the biggest crate possible for your dog?
For some people, it is a matter of space. The bigger the dog crate, the harder it can be to find space for it in your home.
However, a crate that is too big for your dog can be problematic for other reasons. If you are housetraining your dog, he may use half of a big crate as a toilet, rather than using it just for sleeping.
We will tackle how you can stop this in puppies later.
Crate training your dog will be much easier if you choose one that fits him properly.
But, now weve looked at the best size of crate for a German Shepherd, lets look at what crates are used for.
Endura Flap Wall Mounted Dog Door
If youve noticed, a common downside among dog doors lie within their ability to prevent weather from coming into the house. As such most dog doors tend to be energy-inefficient and dont do well under harsh weather conditions. So if thats a primary concern of yours, I suggest you check the Endura Flap Wall Mounted Dog Door.
This double flapped dog door is designed especially for extreme weather. It provides excellent insulation and resists energy loss in your home even as temperatures get as low as -40 degrees fahrenheit. It does so as the flaps and its three magnetic seals are powerful enough to resist strong gusts of wind and keep the door shut. Again, if youre looking for a dog door thats energy efficient this is the one for you.
That said, this dog door is quite expensive with its price double to even triple that of the other dog doors in this list. So while you are paying for quality, I must say it is quite heavy on the pocket

What Size Dog Door Does A German Shepherd Need
The average German Shepherd weighs between 75 and 95 pounds. For most pet door brands that will translate to a large dog door.
Once youve decided what dog door properties are important to you for instance weather proofing, a low level of maintenance, low cost up-front or low cost long-term its a good idea to weigh and measure your dog. That way you have something to compare to the desired manufacturers size charts.
The opening width should be a little wider than your German Shepherd so its easy to get through without getting stuck on the edges.
Measure your dogs height. You need two measurements: the top of the shoulder and the bottom of the chest. The easiest way to measure a dog is calling them to stand next to you and marking the height on your own leg.
If youre still uncertain, cut the doors opening size in a piece of cardboard. If your pet can go through the hole in the cardboard without problems, they will be able to get through the pet door.
When it comes to the PlexiDor, German Shepherds require a large door.
Kelixu Heavy Duty Crate
This option is built on top of locking wheels. So, it is easy to move around your home, especially if you will struggle to lift a heavy crate!
Like the previous option, the Kelixu crate has a slide out plastic tray for easy cleaning.
But this crate only has one door, and has no divider. This wont be an issue as long as youre happy with the position of the door.
However, if youre buying it whilst your GSD is a puppy, you will need to buy a divider to go with your crate.

Which Size Pet Door Do I Need
Hale Pet Doors come in 11 standard sizes that fit animals of all sizes. You can also order a custom pet door. Refer to the sizing guide to help you with your choice.
There are 3 measurements you need when choosing the correct size door for your pet:
You can also make a sample door opening out of a large piece of cardboard that is the size of the pet door you are considering. Place it in a door opening and experiment with height placement. Order the size most comfortable for your pet.
Age Agility And Health
A low step over will be particularly handy for older dogs or dogs with any health issues. A pet door that is too high off the ground will be difficult for dogs with injuries or dogs in old age to use comfortably. Youll want to purchase a properly sized dog door that lasts your pet throughout its lifetime.

Does A Dog House Keep A Dog Warm
A basic doghouse deflects rain and wind, but provides little or no way to hold warmth. Insulating your dogs house helps to block out cold and retain your dogs body heat. A well-insulated doghouse, packed with plenty of dry, clean bedding material, is essential for any dog who must spend time outside.
Best Dog Door For Bad Weather
The PetSafe Extreme Weather Energy Efficient Pet DoorAmazon.com
Pros:Energy-efficient pet doors are one of todays biggest trends, says Mullikin, explaining that manufacturers are now using much better materials than that old, yellow vinyl flap youve seen hanging around. Some brands use numerous flaps for better insulation, like the PetSafe Extreme Weather Energy Efficient Pet Door .
Cons: Again, theres that issue of the hole in the wall, and there is no easy way to keep unwanted varmints out. Also, some skittish pets are afraid of multiple flaps.

If and when the flap wears out, you can purchase a replacement flap here.
Sizes: Small, Medium, Large, Extra-Large
Helpful Review: We bought this to use on my daughters bedroom door so the cats and dog can enter and exit her room at will during the night and in the morning. Pets range in size from 6 lbs to 30 lbs.It was easy to install and doesnt look terrible on an interior door. The magnetic closure made a lot of noise though when the pets went in and out so we removed the bottom magnet. The plastic cover to prevent the pets from going out doesnt fit very well. The little cat was able to pry it off with little effort. Luckily, we dont really need to keep them in the room so its not a big issue for us.
Petsafe Freedom Aluminum Patio Panel Sliding Glass Dog And Cat Door
For obvious reasons, its not very practical to mount a dog door directly into a sliding glass door. Enter the PetSafe Patio Panel Sliding Glass Pet Door, an aluminum frame that fits the length of your sliding glass door and includes a flexible flap with magnetic closure to allow your dog in and out.
Size: Small, Medium, Large, Extra-Large, Large-Tall
Helpful Review: I see why they call it the Freedom pet door! Now I dont need to let my two in and out every five minutes. Even our 113lb Bernese Mountain Dog can get through easily. We took the latch off the inside jam to make it fit better and can replace that if we take out the pet door. Also, dont forget to clean your glass on your old doors because you wont have access to that overlapping area if you screw in the pet door. Very solid and the flap closes each time plus there is more room than we expected for people to walk through.

Introducing A German Shepherd Puppy To A Kitten
The first step is to feed the two animals in close proximity to each other. However, put your puppy on one side of a closed door and your kitten on the other. It is unlikely that the two animals will be comfortable seeing each other at this point but they will start to pick up each others scent.
Dont introduce the two animals until your puppy is able to follow commands to sit, stay and leave it. Once your puppy is at this stage try a 5-minute meeting while your puppy is in its kennel. Keep this up for a couple of weeks and each time gradually increase the amount of time that the animals are together until you reach 30 minutes.
The next stage is to do the same with your dog out of the kennel but on a leash. Continue the same process as before until reaching 30 minutes. Then follow the same process with your dog off the leash.
If your dog becomes aggressive at any point in this process, remove the cat and yourself from the situation so that your dog learns that type of behaviour means it is left on its own.
Why Use A Divider
Dividers are usually sheets of plastic or metal caging that can be used to separate your dogs crate into smaller sections.
Using a divider will allow you to tailor your crate to the exact size you need. And to change it accordingly as your dog grows!
This will save you a lot of money in the long run, as you wont need to replace your dogs crate each time he outgrows it.
Plus, it means your dog wont be in a crate that is too big for him, which can be messy!
So what size crate is best for a German Shepherd puppy? The same as an adult!

What Will Be The Dimensions For The Large Dog House
- The dimensions are measured in a principle where you add plus inches to the dogs length in width, height, and depth.
- There are a lot of formulas for measuring the dogs, but the most suitable dimensions are based on the dimensions of your pet. All of the formulas are similar, but provide different sizes of dwelling.
- If you plan to build one, then this will be a little bit tough for you since you need to be precise
- The dwellings for extra-large breeds are quite difficult to find, but we reviewed several in the reviews below that are suitable for your GSD.
- The large dogs need the biggest dwellings.
Finally, the most used formula for choosing a house is:
- the length of the dog + 12 inches in depth,
- the length + 18 inches in width
- the length + 3 inches in the low side and 9 inches in the high side in height.
If we use this formula, it will be very difficult to choose the right booth.
It is better to use the formula developed by the Ontario Humane Society.
According to this formula, so to calculate:
- the floor space, simply multiply the dogs height by 36 inches
- the height add two inches to the size of the GSD in a sitting position

What Size Crate For A German Shepherd: The Best Options For Big Dogs
January 13, 2020 By Meg Austwick
Are you wondering, what size crate for a German Shepherd dog is best?
The best German Shepherd crate size is usually either 42 or 48. But, it will depend on the size of your individual GSD.
Like any breed, male German Shepherds are often larger than females. So males will often need slightly bigger crates.
Its best to buy the right sized adult crate, even from puppyhood. You can simply use a crate divider whilst your dog is growing to its full size.
