Which Line Should I Choose

Which line you choose really depends on what your German Shepherd is going to be doing. Adopting a champion or the child of a champion from a show line simply to have the title may not be the best option if the dog does not have the proper temperament for a family setting. Some of these dogs have issues with anxiety or fear, which are a sign of weak genetics in the dog breeding world. However, if you are trying to find a dog to show, a German Shepherd from the American, Canadian, or West German show lines from a reputable breeder is a great option.

On the other hand, if you want a dog as a family pet or to train in some sort of job, an animal from the working lines may be a better option, since these dogs are bred specifically for their trainability, loyalty, obedience, and intelligence, which are all important when it comes to having a German Shepherd as a pet or to do a specific job.

It is, of course, possible to get a dog from a show line that is just as intelligent, trainable, and healthy as from a working line, if you source your dog from the right breederone that cares about a dogs health, rather than just getting the right look. A well-bred German Shepherd, of any type, will be caring, loving, protective, and intelligentthose are the characteristics to look for, as well as looking for a certain coloration, pattern, or body style.

White German Shepherd Breeders In Wisconsin

If youre looking for white German Shepherd breeders in Wisconsin, your best option might be to buy a dog in the neighboring state of Illinois. White Star German Shepherds is one of the breeders who sell to Wisconsin residents and offer high-quality dogs and some of them are white German Shepherds .

While the duo that leads this kennel insists on meeting all aspiring dog owners personally, they dont mind selling to residents of other states, which is something many breeders are not okay with.

They breed and raise their dogs in their four-acre facility, providing all dogs with a clean and safe environment. They ensure their puppies spend a lot of time outdoors so they can deplete their excess energy levels.

As they limit the number of breeding, they produce only a few litters per year, and their waiting lists tend to be long especially if youre waiting for new white GSD puppies.

Types Of German Shepherds: A Guide To Dog Breed Variations

Sam Shephard is an experienced German Shepherd owner and has learned throughout the years how to optimize the breed’s health and wellness.

This article will take a look at the many different breed variations of German Shepherds, particularly along show and working lines.

You have probably noticed during your research about this breed that there are many different types of German Shepherd dogs . Unlike some breeds that seem to have a very homogeneous body style, coloration, and personality amongst their purebred set, purebred German Shepherds come in many different sizes, colors, coloration patterns, and body styles.

Coat Color And Grooming

The German Shepherd was originally bred to herd flocks in harsh climates, and their medium-length double coat fits the job perfectly, acting as protection the dog from rain and snow and resistant to picking up burrs and dirt.

The coat types of the German Shepherd are as varied as their color. Some German Shepherds are longhaired. However, the “ideal” German Shepherd has a double coat of medium length. The outer coat is dense with straight hair that lies close to the body, and is sometimes wavy and wiry.

The coat comes in variety of colors and patterns including black black and cream black and red black and silver black and tan blue gray liver sable and white. The American Kennel Club doesn’t recognize white as a color for this breed, however, and won’t let white German Shepherds compete in conformation shows, although they’re allowed in other competitions.

Sometimes jokingly called “German shedders,” the breed sheds year-round, and generally “blows”sheds a lot of hair at once, like a snowstormtwice a year. If you want a German Shepherd, be prepared for hair on your black pants, on your white couch, and pretty much all over the house.

There’s no magic solution to shedding, and we just have to accept it. However, brushing two to three times a week will help more of the hair come out in a brush, rather than on your furnishings. And a sturdy vacuum cleaner doesn’t hurt either.

East German Ddr Working Line German Shepherds

East German DDR Working lines share many common characteristics with the West German lines. They share much of the same history as well. They were bred and tailored particularly for their extremely heightened desire to work, along with their quick ability to guard.

Because of their prey drive instinct, monitoring them around other animals and small children can help to avoid primal triggers. That doesnt mean that every dog in the line is as prey-driven. Some are incredibly docile and sweet, never hurting a fly. However, because of their working roots, it is something to watch for as a responsible owner.

They have incredible focus and endurance, suiting them perfectly for physically and mentally stimulating roles. Like their West brothers and sisters, East German DDRs have sable coloring, though most are darker and sometimes even black.

West Show Line German Shepherds

  • The West German Show Line German Shepherds are widely considered as the most beautiful GSD breed. They are very gracious in movement. They are very intelligent can be trained very easily.
  • The West Show Line German Shepherds also have a sloped body, but it is not as sloping as American Show Line German Shepherds.
  • The West Show Line German Shepherds tend to have black and red saddles, black and tan, sable, bi-colors and black. Every dog in the West Show Line German Shepherd breed is required to be fully fit with his health before he/she mate or pass their genes.
  • The West Show Line German Shepherds can do great both as protectors and family pets as compared to American Show Line GSDs. The West Show Lines GSDs are not lazy and in fact they need a lot of exercise and training.
  • They have better health and better drive than the American Show Line German Shepherds.

White Swiss Shepherd Dog

The White Swiss Shepherd Dog is a variety of the German Shepherd bred in Switzerland. It descends from the American White Shepherds the first stud dog of what became the breed was an American dog born in 1966 and imported to Switzerland. The variety was recognised by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale as a separate breed in 2003, and it is now recognised by a number of national kennel clubs.

Are You Away From Home Frequently Or For Long Periods Of Time

GSDs can become anxious or bored if left alone for long periods of time and are more likely to express their worry with excessive barking, chewing, or digging. Some German Shepherds can also suffer from extreme separation anxiety if left alone for too long. Crate training can help teach them to be calm and happy when separated from their owner but it is best to have the availability to be near your pet as much as possible so as to not leave them alone for long periods of time.

Are German Shepherds Smart

According to the author of The Intelligence of Dogs,, Stanley Coren, Ph.D., ranks the German Shepherd as the third smartest dog breed. This study took a look at more than 100 dog breeds as they were judged by 200 dog obedience judges while learning new commands. Dogs were ranked based on their ability to perform commands 95% of the time or better based on less than five command repetitions.

The incredible level of intelligence in the German Shepherd, a level only bested by the Border Collie and the Poodle, makes this breed incredibly versatile. An ability to quickly pick up new commands and an intense desire to please its master means that this breed is the perfect candidate for any number of professional positions available to canines. This trait is perhaps why this is the breed of choice for both military and police work worldwide.

When theyre serving professionally, the German Shepherd can take part in police work, guard dog work, sheepdog work, service dog work, military work, and search and rescue work. German Shepherds also frequently participate in dog sports, including obedience, tracking, flyball, ring sport, and agility.

How Do They Reproduce

High-Class K9 “Toby”. Black Bicolor German Shepherd Trained in Obedience & Protection

Like most mammals, German Shepherds reproduce sexually. A male German Shepherd dog is sexually mature around the age of two years while the female experiences the first heat cycle when she is around six months. However, a female German Shepherd should have puppies only after she has experienced her second heat cycle. Though female German Shepherd dogs experience heat cycles every six months, breeding is advised only once a month to have healthy German Shepherd puppies.

Czech Working Lines German Shepherds

Owners wanted Czech German Shepherds to be just as labor intensive as other working lines. When Germany split between the East and West, Czech Shepherds became more commonplace but didnt flourish until Germany reunited in 1989.

Czechs are a bit leaner than other working lines and are nimble because of that. They tend to mature the slowest growth-wise of the working lines. They were once the most prey driven, which led to high stamina and agility. As far as looks are concerned, they generally have a sable or agouti coat, which is a mixture of black and tan shades.

While this line has calmed over the years, they are still hard-wired for work. So, if you opt for a Czech puppy, reputable breeding to ensure a proper temperament for your family situation is imperative. Having appropriate outlets is vital. If you want the best out of your dog, providing them with appropriate behavioral training is key to an irreplaceable relationship.

However, many of these dogs have a relaxed temperament in todays world, making them fun-loving companions for multi-pet and multi-people households. Because of muddied breeding, many Czech puppies have bloodlines that veered off, mixed with another German Shepherd type line along the way.

Czech Gsd Health Issues

Czech German shepherds are prone to the same health issues that a standard GSD has. They dont have any special illness exclusive to the variation, so you have nothing to worry about.

This includes eye infections, vision problems, and more importantly, hip dysplasia.

Czech shepherd puppies from an unethical breeder are, however, prone to more health issues than a normally bred German shepherd puppy.

A Short History Of The German Shepherd

As the name of the breed suggests, the German Shepherd originates from Germany. The history of the breed dates back to the late 1800s. In the 1850s, German dog breeders were trying to standardize dog breeds to preserve the best traits that assisted their job of herding sheep. This was practiced within small communities of people in Germany where shepherds bred dogs.

German breeders wanted to have a dog that had the necessary skills for herding sheep such as intelligence, strength, speed, endurance, and a strong sense of smell. The breeders got results but the ability and the appearance of dogs differed from one community to another. As a result, the Phylax Society was formed in 1891 with the purpose of creating native dog breeds but it was disbanded in just a few of years due to internal disagreements on the traits of the dogs the organization should promote. Nevertheless, Germanys efforts to create a dog breed of the nations own continued.

In 1899, Max von Stephanitz, an ex-member of the Phylax Society and a former student of the Berlin Veterinary College, was shown a dog during one of his visits to a dog show named Hektor Linksrhein. The dog was agile, loyal, fast, intelligent, and appeared pleasing to the eye. The dog satisfied his beliefs of what a working dog should be, and he purchased him.
