Hello,We just adopted a Male GSD Puppy he is now 1 yr. we brought him home about 3 months ago. He was given up 2 times and sheltered for 3months until now. We also have two other GSD that he is getting along fairly well with. We are getting thru the bitting and nipping. He is learning commands. Not quite listening to his name. I believe he had many. BUT, enjoying life as he has it now. We live on a Acre, lots of things to explore. Problem though He has become quite aggressive towards anyone that is not in our pack. NOT GOOD. He is quite the Stinker! We are very social people, and our Dogs are too. But, this pup wont have anything to do with it. And this Pup is growing Fast and Strong. This is our 11th Shepherd and he definitely has attitude. I am walking, but with a muzzle, I just dont trust him. Trying to socialize him. At first he was great, we could have ppl over, but as time has past he is more possessive. Any advise? Thanks

  • What To Do If Biting Becomes Aggressive

Although puppy mouthing is normal, there can be cases where biting can signal problems and possibly even aggression.

How can you tell if a puppys temper tantrum is a warning sign or just playful mouthing?

Well, its not always easy to tell the difference. Look for physical differences in your pup. When play fighting, your puppys overall demeanor should be relatively relaxed.

If your puppy is having a moment of aggression, their body may stiffen when snarling, and bites will typically be more painful than during regular play.

Also, if your GSD puppy is biting out of fear or frustration, you may need to take action. These types of behavior are not something your pup will just grow out of.

If youre worried that your new puppy may be exhibiting signs of aggression, contact a qualified professional for advice.

How To Train A German Shepherd Puppy To Stop Biting

    Use treats for positive reinforcement.

When your puppy does something wrong, give him a pre-selected command to express that you are not happy with what hes doing. A simple no will do the trick.

When he responds favorably, give him treats, pet him or allow him to have time with his toy. This response is much better than raising your voice or using other unfavorable training methods that only serve to make the dog resent you.

If youre still having behavioral issues, theres a better than average chance that youre not giving your dog enough exercise.

Increasing his physical activity can go a long way toward curbing any behavioral issues that might still exist.

    Engage In Structured Exercise

Make sure you properly exercise your dog so they dont have extra energy to want to engage in destructive behavior and biting.

An overfed dog that is under-exercised may display destructive behaviors because of boredom and lack of energy needs being met.

Get up off the couch and go outside for a walk and sniff party. German Shepherd puppys bones arent fully fused until theyre 12 to 18 months old, so be careful in the exercises you choose.

Stimulating exercise doesnt mean high-intensity exercise.

Low impact activities and free-running are best. Choose from a list of fun and gentle, age-appropriate puppy exercises to keep your pup healthy and better behaved.

Month Old To 6 Month Old Puppy Biting

Not so many puppies are still biting in a troublesome way at five or six months old, but those that are are usually causing their owners a lot of concern. Older puppies that bite in play have often learned that this gets them a lot of attention. They have discovered that people squeal and shout and get quite cross.

Sometimes these people push and shove the dog around which young dogs quite enjoy when they are playing. For these dogs it is important that you stop all physical play, with all family members. If a puppy is biting hard at your hands when you try to interrupt his game. Or an older puppy is getting out of hand biting at clothing, you need to put your puppy on a harness and house-line . Is My Puppy Biting Aggressive

You cannot determine whether or not a puppy is biting aggressively by how hard he bites or by the volume of the noise he makes. Play biting puppies bite hard and growl fiercely. Some puppies do occasionally draw blood. But these are not normally savage or crushing bites and the puppy is clearly enjoying himself.

Do Puppies Grow Out Of Jumping Up

Your puppy won’t learn theyre not supposed to jump up unless you teach them that it’s undesirable behaviour. As mentioned earlier, jumping up for attention is natural, so your dog will continue to jump up without training. Depending on their breed and size, they could unintentionally harm someone as they grow into an adult dog, so it’s important to teach your puppy when theyre young.

If left untrained, adult German Shepherds can be prone to aggression towards other animals and humans, which can result in tragic situations.

Its very important that you do not overlook the importance of early training and socialization. To get a better understanding of what is involved with these necessary steps, be sure to read these 2 excellent articles:

Possible Reasons Your German Shepherd Jumps Up

STOP puppy biting!!! with German Shepherd Man and Jae

There are a handful of reasons why your German Shepherd might start jumping that I will mention below.

    Excitement

The most probable reason for the jumping;is that it is excited. When German Shepherds get excited its common for them to express their excitement;by jumping up. They do it because they want to greet you at the face and because their mother would feed them from the face as puppies and they would jump up.

This type of jumping can be stopped with training using the methods in the section below. One method in particular that you should try would be to teach it to stay and sit and then to reward it for doing so. You can watch how its done in the video in the next section.

    Attention

German Shepherds;were bred to work with their owners doing intensive tasks for hours daily. With that being the case, they need a lot of exercise to be properly stimulated. If they dont get enough exercise then it can encourage hyperactive;behavior which can include jumping.

If your German Shepherd isnt getting a lot of exercise at the moment then one of the first things for you to do would be to make sure that it does.

    Not enough training

Jumping is a habit that German Shepherds pick up when theyre young. Their mothers;would feed them from the mouth and they would have to jump up to get it. If the behavior isnt corrected then they will keep that habit.

    Fear

    Is My Puppy Afraid

A scared puppy may bite and scared puppies can grow into scared adult dogs so this is something you need to address quickly. You will know that your puppy is scared because he will try to avoid whatever it is he is scared of.

He wont pursue your slippers or fingers, but may try and hide in his bed or under the furniture and may bite when you attempt to remove him from his hiding place. A really frightened puppy will sometimes give off a distinctive musky smell.

This hiding, and retreating, and the scared smell are warning signs that you have scared your puppy badly, or purchased a poorly socialised puppy. In this situation you need to get specialist help right away. Your vet should be able to advise you. For the vast majority of puppy owners then, biting is normal puppy behavior.

How To Discourage Jumping And Biting Behavior

Thankfully, there are ways you can curb German Shepherd jumping and biting.

    • Be proactive. If I knew someone was coming over, I would put Allie in another room or in her crate. Once our visitor was in the house and the initial excitement had passed, I would let her out. By keeping her from greeting people right when they walked through the door, I could minimize her overzealous behavior.
    • Teach a place command. This is a simple command that teaches your dog to stay in her place until you give a release command. This is another way to allow the initial excitement to pass and your German Shepherd to calm down a bit before greeting anyone.
    • Redirect attention to a toy .
    • Fold your arms and turn away. You can also use an off command when you turn. Keep turning until your GSD stops jumping, then praise them and use a treat as a reward.

This training method works great because youre refusing to give your German Shepherd what they want attention! Its best to practice this when you dont have guests over so that your pup knows how to handle excitement in advance.

At What Age Do German Shepherd Puppies Stop Biting

Puppies are somewhat like children in this particular respect. Some of them stop biting at a relatively young age, while others continue to display this behavior for so long that you might start to fear it will never go away.

Typically, a German Shepherd will tend to bite things for roughly the first year of its life.

However, that doesnt mean that every dog is automatically going to stop biting when it turns 12 months old. Most dogs will stop chewing on things by the time theyre six or seven months old. Unfortunately, others might continue displaying the behavior until they are two or even three years old.

That is why give your German Shepherd puppy basic obedience training and learn commands such as leave it, sit, and stay. And to continually reinforce the behavior you want with ongoing training and positive reinforcement.

If you have a dog trained to listen to you and trained not to bite down on things, it shouldnt be biting in the first place. Its much easier to curb this behavior than simply hoping it will stop on its own.

When its all said and done, its important to remember that a puppy is not a novelty item.

When you decide to get a puppy, ask yourself if youre genuinely willing to put in the time and effort required to teach him the behaviors you want him to learn.

Training a German Shepherd puppy requires a great deal of patience.

Furthermore, you have to remain calm. If youre not calm, your dog will pick up on your emotions and will tend to act out.
