Don’t Buy The First Puppy You See

German Shepherd Puppies For Sale

All puppies are appealing. If you are buying a puppy because of its pretty face, it will not look like that grown up. If you are buying it because it seems gentle and quiet, it simply may be well fed and sleepy. If you are buying the one that comes to you and bites your hand, it may do that the rest of its life. Be a discriminating buyer. You will be living with this dog for as long as 12 years.

Ask To See The Health Certificates On The Parents

Some breeders will tell you that they have never had a problem with “hips” in their line but will not give you any x-ray information to support their statement. There is only one way to verify whether or not a dog has hip or elbow dysplasia and that is through x-ray screening. There is only one data base available to find out if your breeder has x-rayed their breeding stock and that is through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals or OFA. The OFA lists only dogs that have been cleared for hip and elbow dysplasia. This information is available for search on their web site. Neither the Penn-Hip nor the OVC have an open listing for you to verify the breeder’s claims.

A responsible breeder will have on hand the OFA certificates for both parents of the puppy. These certify that the dog has been x-rayed and has been found to be free of hip and elbow problems. If the breeder does not have the certificates, ask for the OFA numbers and the registered names of the parents so that you can check to see if they have been x-rayed.

Jean-Francois: How much is a purebred German Shepherd puppy without papers worth? The guy says the puppy’s parents have papers and is trying to sell it for $ 300 without papers. I’m guessing it’s a rip-off.

Answer by â¦Dalmatian Appreciationâ¦Without legit kennel club papers itself, there’s no proof the pup is purebred. So yes, I’d say max $ 100

Answer by CarriePapers or no papers you have to take into consideration that these puppies and mom cost a lot to feed and care for before being ready for homes. Our nonpaper German shepherd just had 12, her 1st litter of no papers German shepherd pups. $100 more than regular food in 1 week because of nursing to be continued. You can visually see the traits. $250 an average Shepherd pup with no papers is basically a free puppy to the owner of the pups. In addition to that if someone canât afford that they canât afford what a dog that size takes to care for. Thatâs the natural selection of people making poor decisions in my opinion. I do suggest making sure vaccinations are given before buying the puppy.

Answer by JTPActually, that is a great price! I would even say that’s pretty cheap, especially since it’s a German Shepherd.

Answer by SuperGirlIt doesn’t matter if the parents have papers. Parents with papers should have puppies that have papers as well. It should be no more than $ 150 without papers.

How Much Is A German Shepherd Puppy Worth

German Shepherd puppies can range in price anywhere from $500 to up to $20,000. The huge difference in price depends on several factors, including location, breeder, parentage, and life purpose. German Shepherd Puppies kept as pets usually range between $500-1500, whereas show dog puppies range from $1500-$5000.

    Adopt A German Shepherd

It may take some patience and persistence, but you can find a nearly free German Shepherd from a local shelter. If they don’t currently have puppies, check back often. Or ask them to call you as soon as they get one.

Adoption fees can range from $25 – $150. The adoption fee will normally cover an initial vet checkup with puppy shots and a spay or neuter.

This is cheaper than the cost of a purebred German Shepherd from a rescue group. And much cheaper from a reputable breeder where you should expect to pay at least $700 for a quality GSD.

Why adopt a dog? You may be their last hope. Many shelters only hold dogs for a week. If they are relinquished by their owner, they are on the short list for euthanasia, as they are not considered lost and no one will be coming to look for them. My Begian Malinois, Ryder, was 48 hours away from being put down after his owner signed him over.

Search for a local animal shelter.

How Do You Pick A German Shepherd Puppy From A Litter

Selecting your German Shepherd puppy from a litter

  • Choose a puppy that is sociable around you and other puppies.
  • Pick a puppy that walks confidently with its head high and tail up and wagging.
  • Choose a puppy that has clear eyes, ears, and teeth, walks evenly, and appears clean.
  • Look at the personalities of the puppies.

If you are looking for a German Shepherd, avoid Craigslist and other free listing sites. Most of these dogs will likely have poor temperament and/or assorted health problems.

Don’t make price your primary consideration. Backyard breeders and puppy mills price low to sell quickly. Avoid these unscrupulous breeders.

Even if an ad reads AKC registered dogs, this is not necessarily a sign of a quality dog. My AKC registered dog came from a BYB. Be aware that Puppy Mills also use this as a lure for unsuspecting buyers.

Ask About Litter Evaluations For Structure And Temperament

One of the reasons for seeing the parents, if possible, is to get an idea of what the puppy will look like when it is an adult dog. Another is to evaluate the parent’s temperament as suitable for your home environment. Ask to see siblings or other relatives, if possible. These will give you a general idea about the temperament and structure of your puppy but are not guarantees. There are methods of testing litters and ranking them on an objective form. Two are most commonly used: Puppy Puzzle and the litter evaluation as described by the Monks of New Skete. Ask the breeder for the results on your puppy. The temperament of the puppy you choose may not be suitable for your home environment.

When people are looking for a puppy as a show prospect, they look for things such as structure, “attitude” and movement. People who wish to use their puppy in Schutzhund, look for a strong play drive. Still others look for a temperament suitable for a home with children in a neighborhood of small children. There are tests for each of these traits. Ask the breeder if the tests were performed on all members of the litter and what the test scores were. If you don’t know what the test scores mean, ask for a print-out of the test.

  • How Much Does It Cost A Month To Own A German Shepherd

You should budget at least $90-110 every month for your dog. This will cover the basics: high-quality food and regular vet checks. Some German Shepherd owners spend considerably more money. Professional grooming is necessary for many German Shepherd owners, as these dogs shed heavily. Depending on your location and the type of groomer you choose, a single visit can be as much as $120.
