Do Gsds Like To Play With Other Dogs

This is determined on a case by case basis and is highly dependent on the temperament and training of the dog in question.

In general, you want to provide the opportunity for your German Shepherd to play with other dogs as much as possible.

This is not only great to burn energy and stimulate their mind, but teaches them important social skills.report this ad

Not all German Shepherds are dog-friendly however, so ensure yours is given ample opportunities to socialize to prevent the possibility of fighting or aggressive outbursts.

Is A German Shepherd Right For Me

Before bringing home a German Shepherd Dog, consider the following:

  • Is anyone living in your house allergic to dogs?
  • If you are renting, does your rental property allow dogs? Can you afford the pet fee?
  • Can you afford to take your puppy to training classes? Do you know how much does a trained German Shepherd cost?
  • Do you have a fenced yard or access to a fenced yard to play fetch with your puppy?
  • Do you have the time and patience to brush your puppy, bathe your puppy, and trim your puppys nails? If not, can you afford to take your puppy to the groomer? A brush, bath, and nail trim for a large dog can range from $50 to $100.
  • Can you forgive your puppy for chewing your favorite shoes or pillow?
  • Can you afford your puppy? On average, owners will spend approximately $10,000 on a large dog who lives to be 10 years old.

According to ASPCA, A dog is a commitment of approximately 8 to 15 years sometimes more, sometimes less. The most important thing to do before purchasing a puppy or adopting a puppy or dog is to ensure that you are ready and able to give them the best home possible.

According to The Telegraph, Dogs have the intelligence of 2-year-old human children. They are smart and will quickly become valued members of your family. Please ensure that a German Shepherd is right for you before bringing one home.

According to VetStreet, You will spare yourself and the dog mental and emotional heartbreak if you are honest with yourself before bringing one home.

What To Avoid When Buying A German Shepherd Puppy

Finding the right breeder is a challenge itself. Responsible breeders are few and far between compared to puppy mills. Other than looking on the AKC list of registered breeders, are there criteria you can refer to be sure the breeder is legitimate?

Yes, there is! Although it can make you hesitate if the breeder isnt AKC registered, they may still be a very responsible breeder. We have put together some tips to help you steer clear of breeders who do not give the proper care to their dogs.

Should You Get A Male Or Female German Shepherd

AKC Registered German Shepherd For Sale Millersburg, OH ...

While Male and female German Shepherds are similar in many traits, they are also different in a number of them, which might affect your choice when buying.

Consider what you want the dog for and your experience when determining whether to purchase a male or female German Shepherd. If youve never had a dog before, a female is preferable because shes easier to train. If you want a guard dog, go for a male because they are more dominant and aggressive.

Consider the following when making your choice:

  • Male GSDs are larger in both weight and height while females are smaller . Please note, these are approximations as individual dogs will vary. To give you an example of this, my female KC registered GSD weighs 88lb , and she is very tall, standing 27/68cm.
  • Males will portray a masculine build as opposed to the delicate features of the female.
  • Females will be in heat twice annually. If you do not intend to breed your pet, you should consider spaying her.
  • Female GSDs live longer when compared to males 9.7 years.

These traits may not be vividly pronounced in young puppies, but it is important to bear them in mind. Whether you choose to buy a male or female pup will depend on your circumstances, such as experience, lifestyle, and purpose for the dog.

Akc Registered Puppies: Are Akc Papers Important

By Michele Welton, Dog Trainer, Breed Selection Consultant, Author of 15 Dog Books

At some point, if you’re talking to an unknowledgeable breeder, you’re likely to hear something like this: “My puppies come with AKC papers and a pedigree!”

They expect you to respond with an awed whistle.

Here’s a better response: O yay.

Now, you might be surprised to hear this, because you probably thought “AKC registered puppies” meant good quality. That’s what the AKC would like you to believe. But it’s not true.

Talk To A Veterinarian

Veterinarians not only deal with many dog breeds, but they also attend to many dogs of the same breed. As such, they have mastered characteristics proper to the GSD and will give you purebred German Shepherd facts and proofs from their own experience.

Suppose you already own the dog that you are trying to identify as purebred. In that case, you can bring your dog to a vet who has vast experience with German Shepherds and have them assess the dogs physical, temperament, and behavior traits.

Alternatively, you can explain to the vet features and behaviors you have observed in your dog and have the vet tell you if they are typical of the breed.

Review The Sires Information

The second step is to identify the sires information, which is usually available in the upper half of the pedigree. Depending on the pedigree, you may also see the name of the sires just to the right after the dogs column. The sires side should include the sires name, registration numbers, and a brief description of the sire.

Identify The Sires Ancestors

A proper pedigree should list all of the dogs ancestors up to their third or fourth great-grandparents. Commonly, most pedigrees are formatted to display the dogs grandparents farther to the right after the sire, then the great-grandparents, and so on.

The next step is to read over the sires history and see if there are repeated names. By doing this, you will be able to determine whether the dog has been inbred, line-bred, or outcrossed. Line breeding is a particularly favorable strategy among dog breeders to lock in desirable traits associated with the breed and the one that you should highly value.

Lets take a look at the difference between the three methods.

  • Inbreeding is the mating of animals that are closely related, for example, a father and daughter, mother and son, or brother and sister.
  • Line breeding is the mating of more distantly related animals that have one common close ancestor, for example, half-brother to half-sister.
  • Outcrossing is the mating of animals that have no common ancestors in the first three to four generations.

Nowadays, inbreeding has become an obsolete practice due to the increased risk of suffering from an inherited disorder therefore, I would recommend sticking with a German shepherd that has been line bred with no outcrossing.

Dogs That Look Like Purebred Gsds

Do you get confused between a Purebred German Shepherd and another dog? Well, many sellers try to fake it that means they try to sell other dogs who are not Purebred German Shepherd but are the lookalike of them.

However, here is a list of specific dogs that looks as they are Purebred German Shepherds but are not:

  • When we consider it in terms of appearance, the Belgian Malinois is a variety of dog that appears to be somewhat the same as a Purebred German Shepherd. They have the same coat and style of hair but what makes a differentiation is that they are not Black and tan.
  • Another shepherd in the race is King Shepherd it is also similar to the German Shepherd, but what makes a difference is the size and the shape. They are a little muscular and come in only sable color.
  • A fraud who sells you the Purebred German Shepherd puppies will try to sell you a Bohemian Shepherd because this breed is not so expensive and increases their profit margin, looting you.
  • One more breed that is cheaper and can be wrongly seen as a German Shepherd is a Northern Inuits. What makes the difference is that they are much larger and can also be lighter than a purebred GSD.
  • The last in the list is a Carpathian Shepherd they are not much similar to GSD as much the other dog breed in this list are, but they can also confuse you just like others if you lack some knowledge. The difference is that they will have black markings just like the Belgian Malinois.

German Shepherd Ear Care And Dental Care

GSDs have tall, alert ears that stand up by the time they reach about four months of age. These ears are a signature feature of the breed and can be prone to infections if you dont keep a watchful eye on their care. Walsh uses hypoallergenic baby wipes to clean her dogs ears, noting that the wipes are easy and gentle to use.

Wilson also recommends cleaning your dogs ears and checking regularly for ear infections. Go to the vet if you notice one, she says, as such infections can be serious and require the care of a veterinary professional.

For dental care, a wide variety of oral care products are available now for dogs. Dental care you can do at home includes the use of disposable dental wipes or dog-friendly flavored toothpaste . The best course of action, though, is to consult with your veterinarian about which dental hygiene routine will be best for your dog.

Dystocia Pregnancy & Birth Complications

One of the issues that can come up with German Shepherds is the size range among some of the dogs. The GSD was not at the beginning intended to be a very large dog. Over time and especially in the United States the GSD has increased in desirable size. A mismatch mating of a sire on the large range with a dam on the low could increase the probability of puppies too large to navigate the birth canal. In the world of dogs, the safest path to a medium-sized dog is not simply to mate a large dog with a smaller bitch.

Size dystocia is common in some breeds especially the brachycephalic ones like a bulldog. In a study of 151 involving over 13,00 bitches in the UK, the German Shepherd Dog was not a very high risk for cesarean section. A pregnant dam of the German Shepherd breed is much more likely than not to whelp that seven or eight puppies naturally without any human assistance.

False Pregnancies

False pregnancy does happen in German Shepherds as they do in other breeds. In this condition, a bitch exhibits the signs of pregnancy such as enlarged mammary glands, enlarged abdomen, vomiting, and the display of nesting behavior. False pregnancy can happen even if a male dog has not been within reach of the bitch. This common hormonal problem will resolve on its own in a couple of months. It is usually not treated.

Do I Need To Register My Service Dog

The ADA does not require you to register your service dog. In fact, the ADA has guidelines for what business owners can ask you related to your dog and disability. If your disability is not obvious, a business or employee can only ask these two questions:

  • Is the service animal required because of a disability?
  • What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

Thats it. They cannot require you to produce a training certificate, registration or ask anything specific about your disability.

You can choose to identify your dog as a service dog by using a harness that identifies his special status. Many dogs are trained using their harness and understand that when the harness is on, its time to work, and when the harness is off, its time to rest.

Using a harness can help your dog understand his role. Additionally, it helps to educate the public that your service dog is a working dog and not a pet, and therefore should not be distracted, pet, or played with while he is working.

However you choose to start your journey with a service dogwhether you use a service, a trainer, or embark on the training adventure yourself, remember that the ADA does not require any special training or program for service dogs.

Your particular needs will help you determine what the best route is for you. The ADA offers further protections as well, such as the questions businesses are allowed to ask about disability, and where and when your service dog can accompany you
