Constructing The Ears Of Your Dog
One of the most characteristic features of german shepherds is their large and upright ears. To create the basis for these ears, you can use a simple curved M shape on top of the head construction circle. Although drawing an M shape is fairly simple, you do need to pay attention to the perspective.
The ear towards the front of the head is further away from us, and it will therefore be slightly narrower than the back one because it appears smaller and because the base will be slightly hidden by the ear closest to us.
Drawing The Final Outline
In this step, you can use all the previously drawn construction lines to help you outline the final body of your german shepherd drawing. Begin with the head, using a curved line to hide the ear that is furthest out, and then outlining the ears with a more realistic shape. Add some inner curved lines to create the inner eardrum. Add the small eye detail on the side of the german shepherds face.
You can trace the muzzle construction lines quite closely and add a small nose patch. When you get to the bottom jaw, draw in the two large canine teeth, some back teeth, and the german shepherds tongue.
Add some bulges to the bottom neckline, and then take this line down to the legs and paws. You can trace the legs quite closely, but use some short strokes along the back of them to create the impression of fur. You can continue to use these short strokes to trace the belly of your german shepherd sketch into the first back leg. Use the same short fur strokes to outline the front of the very back thigh and adding in a fluffy tail between the back legs. Finish outlining the back legs in a single line and then take this line all the way up the back to join with the head.
When you are finished with this step and you are happy with your outline, you can erase any of the remaining construction lines.

Creating Ears For Your German Shepherd Sketch
Their large, upright ears are what make these dogs distinctive from other species. To lay the foundation for the shape, create an M-shaped line on the top of the circle you drew for the head. This shape is easy to draw, but careful attention should be placed on the direction of the M, which will affect the perspective. The part of the M on the right will be the left ear and will therefore be closest to us. The right ear will be on the furthest side from us, meaning that it will be thinner and slightly obstructed from view by the larger one closest to us.
Add Patterns And Marks All Over Its Coat
German Shepherd dogs typically have more than one color, so we will be drawing lines all over its body to help us in coloring its coat later on.
Draw a line across the German Shepherds face, separating its head from its snout. Draw another line across the body and the tail, as shown in the illustration. These lines will serve as the division between the colors of your German Shepherds coat.

How To Draw A German Shepherd Face
Step 1: Begin by drawing a circle. This will help you to form the German shepherds head.
Step 2: Draw the ears, erasing them as vital. Use curved lines that match at gentle points to shape each ear.
Step 3: Contour the face, erasing as vital. On the cheeks, give the impression of bushy fur by drawing a set of short lines that match at jagged points. Connect the cheeks with a curved point, outlining the protrusion of the snout
Step 4: Detail the inner ears with a triangular shape. Notice the overlappingU shaped lines on one side of this triangle. Use thick curved lines to form the eyebrows. Draw several successively smaller circles to shape the eyes color between the two smallest. Draw an oval within an oval to shape the nose, and shade between them. Draw aW shaped line to indicate that the mouth. Contour the snout by drawing lines upwards from the nose and a curved line at the bottom of their snout.
Step 5: Enclose a triangular patch of fur beneath the top. for every side, use a series of short, curved lines that meet at jagged points.
Creating The Main Body For Your German Shepherd Drawing
As with our other animal tutorials, we always begin our sketches by using construction lines to help us lay out the basic proportions, shape, and size of our animal. We will start our German Shepherd sketch by using a large oval shape for the main part of its body. When positioning this oval, keep the finished sketch in mind.
The oval should slant in a way that matches the stance of the dog. The head is on our left, so that will be the side that is sloped upwards. Thus, the right-hand side will be sloped downwards to match the natural direction of the legs.
You will still be adding other limbs around this main oval, so be sure to leave enough room and position the oval in the middle of the canvas.

Constructing The Head Of Your German Shepherd Sketch
This second step in our realistic german shepherd drawing tutorial is very simple. For the head, you can use a construction circle that is ever-so-slightly oval. Place this head circle just above the right end of the main body oval.
You can see on our example below that our circle is slightly oval and that it is angled downwards, with one end facing the bottom left of the canvas. This detail will help make the construction of the german shepherds face easier down the line.
Adding The Second Coat Of Color
The second coat color you are going to use to create your realistic german shepherd drawing is black. Using a medium brush, add a coat of black paint around the german shepherds muzzle including the lower jaw. Color the nostrils with a lighter shade of grey, and use this same grey to add shading to the inside and outside of the ears, and around the eye.
Continue adding black along the back of the german shepherds spine, including the beck and back, and on the underside of the legs and tail.

Adding The Next Layer Of Color To Your German Shepherd
The next layer we are going to add to our drawing is the color black. This time, we will use a medium brush, and starting with the head, add a layer of black around the muzzle area. Then, continue down along its back as well as certain parts of the legs and tail. Now, using a slightly lighter shade of grey, add some color to the nostrils and parts of the eye and ears.
Creating Back Legs For Your German Shepherd
This step follows similar processes to the last one, but the angles differ and the lines used are more curved. Starting with the back leg furthest from us, we will draw a line that slightly curves inward, i.e. towards the edge of your page or canvas. Now, draw a short line that extends outwards towards the left-hand side, and you will have created an ankle!
Now, draw another semicircle for the paw extending from the ankle. Add another line down from the body and connect it to the ankle and paw to finish the leg. For the last back leg, you can go through the same basic steps, but ensure that you make it more curved and thicker than the other one to create a sense of perspective.
The German Shepherd is starting to take shape nicely now, and we can move on to putting on the details to the construction lines!

How To Draw A Cartoon German Shepherd
In this tutorial, Im going to teach you how to draw a cartoon German Shepherd
I grew up in South Africa and these dogs were EVERYYYWHERE! It seemed every family owned a German Shepherd, except ours but thats okay because these dudes poop like champions.
This tutorial is broken up into three parts:
- the Pencil Sketch laying down our foundation of basic shapes
- the Inking Stage drawing in dark lines for the main shape of our doggy and thin lines for the details
- the Colouring Stage bringing our doggy to life with pencils! You can colour in one layer if you want to, but I encourage you to go over your character with two or three layers, as this will make the colours more vivid and richer.
Anyway! Before we start drawing, lets think about what makes German Shepherds unique from other doggos.
Traits:
The main things that I focus on when drawing a German Shepherd are their big noses, their eyes and the shape of their ears
Most of their coats can be simplified down to two main colours golden brown and a very daaaark brown/black
As for their posture, Im sure there are lots of lazy German Shepherds out there, but in my mind, these doggies always look alert and prepared for guard dog duty .

- Eraser must be shaped like a chicken
- Thick Black Pen
- Thin Black Pen
- White Pen
- Coloured Pencils , Red and Blue
Draw The German Shepherds Ears
Draw an upside down V-shaped line on each side above its face to create a pair of upright tapered ears.
The standing pointed ears, as seen in the illustration, is actually one of the most distinctive features of a German Shepherd.
However, dont let the norm stop you from customizing the structure of its ears. You can absolutely draw folded ears, droopy ears, or any form of ears you like!
