German Shepherd Feeding Guide: Senior Years

Surprise New German Shepherd Puppy! Meet Lotus. 10 Week Old GSD Pup Enters Our Life!

Large breed dogs, such as the German Shepherd, age faster than most smaller breed dogs. This is evident by the fast decline in health, joint flexibility, and energy in older large breed dogs compared to same-age smaller breeds.

Because of this, its important for your dogs longevity and happiness to pay attention to signs of aging. When your GSD moves from the adult life stage to senior, you need to adjust her diet.

Large breeds reach the older stage around half of their assumed life expectancy. A German Shepherds life expectancy is anywhere from 10 to 15 years, which means theyd be considered older and borderline senior at around 5 or 6.

This is a good time to ask your vet if you should make any changes to her diet or if its okay to continue with her normal adult meals.

Inevitably, your GSD will need to switch over to a senior diet. Older large breed dogs have lower energy needs. They move slower or less overall and therefore wont need as many calories each day.

Older dogs also tend to slow down their digestion, so an increase in fiber might be a good choice for your senior GSD.

Since the calories in senior-specific dog food have already been adjusted, youll likely still be feeding the same measured amount based on your GSDs weight.

Do be sure to confirm this with your vet, however. Not all foods are created equal.

How Much Does A German Shepherd Cost And Why They Are So Expensive

The German Shepherds are widely known as hard-working dogs, but that is not the only reason why they are the second most popular breed in the U.S. They are also very loyal and brave. Since I already mentioned how they are quite popular in the States, you should not be surprised by the price that most of the respective breeders are asking for them.

They are usually more expensive than any other average pup, but how much does a German Shepherd cost will be determined by pedigree and the color. By pedigree, I mean is it a working dog, a show dog, or a normal pup.

Anyhow in this article, I will talk about the exact cost of the breed, about the expenses of food, vet care, and supplies, so at the end of this article, you will be well aware of if you are financially ready to get a German Shepherd pup or not.

Reasons That Might Make A German Shepherd Ill

  • They are not very warm with the strangers and are also not that friendly with other canines. But this can be easily controlled and changed through training.
  • Their exercise needs are quite high.
  • This breed is not that well suited for a new or first-time dog parent as they require a decent trainer/parent that can efficiently handle and properly raise them.

Price Of German Shepherds From Different Bloodlines

The American Show lines in America, and the German Show lines in Europe are probably the most common bloodlines in those countries.

You can expect to pay around that;$500 to $1500 mark.

Obviously if they have show or working titles or pedigrees youll pay more.

The East German/DDR working lines, and in particular Czech working lines are super expensive because of how rare they are, the level of time that goes into keeping breeding lines regulated, and the experience the breeders usually have.

Its not uncommon when looking at the private breeding program, the;Z Pohranicni straze, dogs are thousands of dollars, up to around;$20k for professionally trained police dogs or working dogs for example .

Consider shipping and passport/immigration costs

Youd want to ask for full breeding history, family trees, health certifications, qualifications and titles, shipping arrangements etc. before paying this much though.

Spend a lot of time to make sure you are getting what you are paying for.

German Shepherd Price And Other Costs

There are many other costs to consider in the full German Shepherd price, in addition to the initial expense, vet bills and food.

Training is incredibly important for dogs. You want your pup to be obedient, well-behaved, sociable and enjoyable to be around.

We recommend you look into group lessons right away. On average, these range from $50-$125 for 4-8 weeks of one-hour sessions.

Then there is the cost of grooming. Fortunately, the German Shepherd is pretty low maintenance in this area.

The breed sheds, so no need to worry about getting haircuts. All you need to do is to brush them every few days and provide regular baths.

They will also need regular nail trims, which you can do at home yourself or schedule an appointment for about $10 a session.

And dont forget about the cost of supplies when you factor out the German Shepherd price.

To start, dogs need a collar, leash, some toys, water and food bowls, a brush and a bed.

Weve compiled a shopping list that notes everything youll need for your new bundle of fur.

Your first temptation might be to run to the pet store and buy everything you can for your new furbaby. For the sake of your pocketbook, however, resist the temptation.

Buy the basics at first, and then youll slowly find out what your dog likes and needs. After all, your dog doesnt need a million new toys or the fanciest dog bed you can find.

Nutritional Needs Of German Shepherds

All dogs deserve healthy, nutritious, and satisfying food, but generic dog food isnt going to be right for most of them. Every breed has its own special dietary needs.

Small dogs, for example, need something totally different than our big, hard-working GSDs. For maximum health and energy, keep these things in mind when deciding what to feed your German Shepherd.;

What Is The Most Expensive Type Of German Shepherd

Like in many dog breeds, certain rare German Shepherd colors are much more expensive than the most common colors and patterns. Special colorings such as the Panda Shepherd, Isabella German Shepherd, black German Shepherd,;dogs with one or two blue eyes;or the extremely rare Albino German Shepherd can be as expensive as $5,000.

;While it is tempting to get a color that nobody else has dont let looks alone guide your decision on your future puppy. It is much more important that your puppy has a sound temperament and fits in well with your family and lifestyle than that he has a certain rare look.

In recent years, a few breeders have produced so-called Miniature German Shepherds. Breeders of Miniature German Shepherds charge extremely high prices for their puppies, starting at $2,000 and ranging up to $4,500 for the smallest dogs. It is important to note that there is no such breed as a Miniature German Shepherd registered with the AKC. These dogs are mutts . Once more, be certain to not decide on your future dog based on looks alone. A stable temperament and good health is much more integral than a certain size or weight.

Adopting A German Shepherd Puppy From A Shelter

When you adopt a German Shepherd puppy from a shelter, this does not mean whatsoever that you are getting an inferior dog. In fact, if you are patient and diligently contact shelters in a wide geographic range, your chances of coming across a purebred GSD puppy are reasonably high.

The further that you are willing to travel, the more likely it is that you will find just the right GSD puppy for you. Lets now take a closer look at some aspects of adoption.

Adoption fees at a shelter are typically inclusive of the following:

  • Veterinary wellness visit and exam
  • Rabies vaccination
  • Deworming
  • Spaying or neutering

If you were to add up the cost of all of these services separately, and not part of an all-inclusive adoption fee, the price tag would invariably be considerably higher. Its easy to see why adopting from a shelter is a much more economical option should it be available to you.

Additionally, you can also feel good about adopting a GSD puppy from a shelter, as the proceeds acquired through adoption fees are used to help support the shelter from which you adopted the puppy. This allows a shelter to continue to rescue new animals and relocate them in safe homes.

One potential downside to adoption is the time and effort that it may take you to find the right pup for you. Unlike a breeder who is able to provide you with rather specific dates, there is no telling when a new GSD puppy may be available through a shelter.

If The Breeder Is Only Willing To Work On A Specific Day Then You Will Have To Rearrange Your Schedule To Accommodate Their Schedule

You and the breeder must be on the same page as far as when the puppy will be ready. Most German Shepherd breeders like to keep their puppies indoors most of the time. This keeps them safe and comfortable. An indoor puppy is also a lot easier to housebreak than an outdoor one.

Because they dont have to fight for attention as much as other dogs. When you buy a German Shepherd puppy for sale, ask the breeder if they have indoor/ outdoor puppies. This way you can see how the pups react together and decide if they are right for each other.

When you buy German Shepherd puppies for sale from a reputable breeder, you will have some form of health insurance. Ask the breeder if this is included in the price of the puppy. If it is, then it is definitely a good idea. Also, you should inquire about crate training, because most dogs will destroy a house if they are not trained to behave. This makes the dog less likely to be destructive.
