How Long Can A German Shepherd Puppy Hold Its Bladder
Lets talk German Shepherd puppy bladder control. Most puppies leave the nest at about eight weeks of age. From this moment on, they already have much better control over the sphincter muscles than at a period of three weeks.
The sphincter muscles control the opening and closing of the urethra. In the beginning, this sphincter does not function properly and the GSD puppy has little or no control over his bladder. In summation, a puppy has a small bladder. That blending, sphincter muscles that do not yet operate optimally and a small bladder, causes the puppy to pee a much.

Tip : Stick To A Feeding Schedule
Having regular mealtimes isnt just part of establishing a routine. It will also help you more accurately predict when they need to go potty.
For young pups, free-feeding also means free pooping, and thats exactly what you dont want while youre potty training.
Try to limit feeding times to three times a day for puppies younger than 6 months. German Shepherds that are at least 6 months old can eat once in the morning and then again in the evening.

There are a number of possible reasons that your German Shepherd might be peeing inside and I will mention a number of them below.
Age
If your German Shepherd is still young then the peeing is likely to be temporary since it will get better at controlling its bladder as it gets older. With that being said, there are still a number of things that you can do to reduce how much it does it. Its also important to take the time to train it outside so that it can learn that its what you want it to do and to avoid bad habits. You can read the section below to see how.
Stress/anxiety
It could be that something is causing your;German Shepherd to become stressed or anxious. Perhaps due to an abusive family member, a new living environment;or it may have recently lost a friend. When it is stressed or anxious then it can cause it to lose control of its bladder and you should take measures to deal with the problem to prevent this. Many dog behaviorists believe that you can eliminate up to 90% of behavior problems if you exercise your dog adequately. Remember that Golden Retrievers were bred to retrieve ducks and other game birds for hunters due to their strength, stamina, and high work ethic. So how much exercise do Golden Retrievers need?
The exercise requirements of a Golden Retriever depend on their age and general health. Puppies need five minutes of exercise per month of age, twice a day until they are fully grown. Adults should have at least two hours of activity per day. Senior dogs might only be able to manage 10-15 minutes.
Large breed puppies should not be over-exercised as this can cause joint and bone problems while growing, but dont worry as you will soon get to know your dog and recognize when hes had enough.
Some days your Golden Retriever might want more exercise, some days less, a bit like humans! If your dog doesnt get excited when you pick up his lead, he is tired and wants to rest or isnt well. Listen to what hes trying to tell you!
My dog will put the brakes on, sit down, and looks up at me if she gets tired during a walk. Its her way of saying shes had enough and wants to go home!

Be Calm About Leaving
Lastly, never make a big deal about your coming and going.; Acting like your leaving is no big deal will help you GSD think the same.;
Our dogs feed off our energy, so if we get all hyped up and make a big fuss every time we leave the house, our German Shepherds will think our leaving is a bigger deal than they should.; Remain calm!
Praise For Potty Training Success
As you establish the routine of taking your puppy out after sleeping, eating, and playing, you also must focus on what to do once you are outside.
Find a spot that will become the potty spot, and always take your dog to the same spot. Stand quietly and wait until they are ready, and as they commence, give a voice command or signal to go potty or do your business. Then wait for the results, and praise lavishly if your puppy goes. Say good boy/girl! then give the pup a yummy treat.
Do this every time you are outside , and soon enough, the puppy will understand that doing their business in the proper spot will bring lots of love and treats. Also, after they eliminate outside, play with your pup for a few minutes before rushing back inside.
If your pup doesnt go when youre outside, you may have to take them inside and come back out again in a few minutes. Even they do go, they may need to head back out very soon, so stay vigilant.
Remember, if there are accidents indoors, do not punish your puppy. If you catch them in the act, you can make a noise or say uh-oh to get their attention, and they will likely stop. Immediately, gently pick up your puppy, take them outside, and praise them heartily when they finish up. Always be sure to sanitize soiled indoor areas with appropriate pet stain cleaning products, so the pup isnt drawn to the same spot again.
