If you would ask people like your friends and family, they might have different opinions that would confuse you. But there is not so much to consider.

The fact that you chose to adopt a rescued German Shepherd than buying one is already one act of kindness. You might already know that there are so many rescued German Shepherds in the world and only a few German Shepherd shelters.

If you adopt one, you are already saving a dogs life. If you want a good rescue, you should consider the German Shepherds temperament.

If the German Shepherd comes at you with no hesitations and no aggressiveness, you would know that it was a good rescue. If the German Shepherd is warm and inviting on your first encounter, it is already a good rescue because there are no signs of any trauma or aggression.

Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

German Shepherd Rescue California Bay Area

Greater California German Shepherd Rescue is an all-volunteer organization of German Shepherd Dog lovers. They rescue German Shepherds from unacceptable and at-risk homes and match them with qualified owners in loving forever homes.

The rescue serves families in Greater Sacramento, parts of North and East San Francisco Bay Area, South Lake Tahoe, Merced, and Modesto. The rescue rarely adopts German Shepherds out of state and rarely adopts them out of the above areas. However, this is a great German Shepherd rescue if you live in Northern California.

Greater California German Shepherd Rescue uses the foster-home network system. They dont have a facility and only work with the foster homes in their service areas. They also dont take in stray German Shepherds and only deal with the dogs legitimate owner. Thus if youre looking to adopt, most of the time you will be able to see the German Shepherds past history and medical records.

About Greater California German Shepherd Rescue

Greater California German Shepherd Rescue is a 501 public charity non-profit. We are an all-volunteer group of German Shepherd lovers dedicated to rescuing German Shepherd Dogs from at-risk and unacceptable situations and finding them permanent, loving homes with qualified owners.We serve the communities surrounding Modesto, Merced, Greater Sacramento, and South Lake Tahoe, and occasionally parts of the North and East SF Bay area. Except for a portion of Nevada around Lake Tahoe, we don’t adopt dogs out of state and rarely adopt out of our area. There are too many other German Shepherds in need of good homes in the other areas. All of our dogs are in foster homes spread throughout our service areas. We aren’t a shelter and don’t have a facility. We don’t take in strays, we will only deal with the dog’s legal owner.

Where Do You Keep Your Dogs

The majority of our dogs are in loving foster homes. This is the best approach because it lets us see the dog in a family environment, often with other dogs. When we dont have enough foster homes for the dogs in our program, we will temporarily use local daycare and boarding facilities. In either situation, we learn something new about our dogs every day!

Things To Have Ready For Your New Dog

a) A crate as discussed above. A wire crate is preferrable as they are less confining and allow more air circulation than a plastic crate. Crates come in sizes so make sure your crate is large enough for your dog to easily turn around in.

b) Collars and ID tags or a collar with permanent ID are a MUST! There are many types of collars for different activities and different training needs. Your dog will have a martingale collar, leash and an ID tag with our tag number and phone number. We recommend you leave this tag on your dogs collar, along with your personal tags, just in case you cannot be reached should your dog get out. Let us be a second level of protection.

We ask that you do not use aversive collars such as pinch/prong collars, shock/e-collars, choke chains, etc. as these may do more harm than good. Please do your research and work with a fear-free or punishment-free trainer. Training may take longer but your bond with your dog will be stronger, and you wont have to rely on these aversive collars just to walk your dog.

Your dogs microchip will be transferred to you shortly after adoption.

c) Food, bowls and treats. We will give you a small amount of the food your dog has been eating to help with any transition needed. Remember to feed a high quality of food as discussed above.

Treats should also be of high quality. Treats used for training should also be high value treats, something your dog just cant resist. Kibble is probably not high value.

How Many Dogs Do You Have

We are a small rescue and typically have about 10-12 dogs in our program. Sometimes we have a lot of adoptions in a short period of time and may not have as many dogs available. A few weeks later we are suddenly swimming in Shepherds! Just keep checking our Facebook page and website for new furry faces.

I Want A Puppy Can I Adopt One

Puppies are a LOT of work! Young puppies should not be left alone more than a few hours at a time. They require lots of time and work to become well balanced adults and this is a 1215-year commitment. We prefer our puppy adopters to have experience and knowledge of herding/working breeds. We also understand that everyone gets their first GSD at some point and what better place than from us? We will be there to help you every step of the way. We ask that you do your research on the breed and have a lifestyle that enables you to care for and socialization the puppy properly.

German Shepherd Rescue Of Orange County

This German Shepherd rescue in California is a volunteer-driven organization. They are funded by private donations and receive no government support. Roughly 50 percent of their dogs come from owner surrenders who cant take care of their German Shepherds anymore. The other 50 percent come from shelters around the Southern California region.

Most German Shepherds come into the rescue with basic training. The rescue advises adopters to enroll their dogs into obedience classes to ensure they have set clear boundaries with the dog.

If youre interested in adopting one of their German Shepherd rescues, they have a thorough screening process to ensure they are placing their dogs into loving forever homes with compassionate individuals or families. They have an open-door policy to allow adopters to bring their German Shepherds back to their rescues if the adopter cant care for the dog anymore.

Are Your Dogs Trained

Most of our dogs will have basic house manners and obedience commands, but some wont. Puppies and young dogs will typically lack the training that an adult dog may have. Well let you know exactly what your Shepherd can and cannot do when we meet. We encourage all our adopters to train their dogs regardless of the knowledge they already have. Proper training helps strengthen the bond among the family, among so many other benefits. We can help with referrals for appropriate training.

I Work Long Hours Can I Still Adopt

German Shepherds are a herding/working breed and need companionship, training, mental and physical exercise. Youll need to show that you and your family can spend adequate time with the dog to meet these needs. If you are single with a busy career that demands all your time, a German Shepherd may not be the perfect choice.

Big Day of Giving: German Shepherd Rescue

Nemo came to us at 10 weeks. I was intending to find him a home because I knew that as a pituitary dwarf he would likely have lifelong health problems. When I saw his adorable little face and Big Dog attitude, I was smitten. My friend Beth who often came to visit shared a special bond with him, and one day when he was six years old, he jumped into the back of her car and declared he was going to live with her. He had a special knack for always knowing when people needed some soul-soothing, and visited in rest homes, churches and in general was an ambassador for the GSD breed. Under Beths special care he remained quite healthy into old age. All the books say dwarves do not live past 5 or 6 years, but Nemo never read the book. We finally helped him over the Rainbow Bridge at age 16 1/2. He was surrounded by the people he loved and given gentle care and as much comfort as possible. His passing was peaceful, and although our tears were many, our hearts were at peace because we knew he had the best life a dog could have. When I thought of the disgraceful way in which some people discarded their ill or older dogs to die alone and frightened in shelters or worse, and the wonderful work that Thulani volunteers do to give them comfort and care instead, I knew the spirit of Nemo needed to come and help. He is our inspiration and we hope we can raise awareness and aid for these deserving senior dogs.

Can I Adopt More Than One Dog

We prefer that if you want to own multiple dogs, you adopt one and let it settle in before adopting a second dog. This will give you time to get to know your dog, bond with your dog, and address possible training issues to make your lives easier. Then come back to us later and well try to find another perfect match for you.
