How To Keep Busy A Puppy In The Crate

How to Train a German Shepherd Puppy – A Detailed Video on GS Training Tips

Puppies love playing with people and toys. The second step to train him should be putting toys in the crate.

Choose some safe chewing toys.

You can also select an area which is limited to a fence. Where your German Shepherd puppy can usually play, place the crate near there.

But allow your German Shepherd Puppy to play in that area only under the supervision, and you should not use this space for an adult dog because they are mighty and can break the playing field.

To make things more interesting, if you have enough space at home or garden, I will suggest you place the crate and create a suitable space fenced area and put a door on it.

Then teach to your shepherd how to go through the door because in the beginning, the shepherd can feel shy or have a fear of it.

The door Preferably Should not be open on both of the sides. Start slowly and teach your German shepherd how to use the door.

You can encourage him by putting some rewards or his favorite toys on the other side of the door. When he gets used to it, he will have an ample space where he can walk around when you are not at home.

This system will allow you to leave your Shepherd Home alone in the crate and he can have a walk around in the fenced area when he is bored to stay in the crate.

Remember to close the fence door when you leave.

Also, make sure that your dog has food available when you are gone.

You have to make sure that you exercise your dog every day so he can feel relaxed and not bark.

How To Teach Your Dog To Roll Over

Dog owners have been teaching their pups to roll over for as long as anyone can remember.

This video will showcase a method of teaching roll over using a device called a clicker.

Honestly, the roll over command doesnt have many practical uses for a dog owner.

But it does offer another bonding experience between you and your favorite pupper.

Teaching the command will deepen your bond and further develop a sense of respect.

Plus, it doesnt hurt that a German Shepherd whos rolling over is one of the cutest things on Earth.

Helpful German Shepherd Training Videos To Watch Now

With all of the German Shepherd training videos floating around YouTube, its hard to figure out which ones are actually worth watching.

After all, you want to make sure you choose something that aligns with your own preferred training strategies, right?

Make Them Work For It

How to Train a German Shepherd Puppy to Come

The next thing you need your dog to do is to realize that they need to do something if they want a treat. Start with something simple, like sitting or coming when called. As soon as they do it correctly, press the button then give them a treat.

Eventually, theyll learn that you expect them to work for their treats. Theyll start to look to you for direction and wait for your command so they can get their reward.

The Best Schedule For German Shepherd Training

Sessions
sit, stay, down, come

Aim for 3 to 6 sessions daily of no more than 2 to 3 minutes each for a young puppy and 3 to 5-minute sessions for an adult. Adjust the time based on your dogs attention span and mood.

GSDs have a high energy drive and will become destructive when not trained and exercised properly, such as chewing excessively. Start raining from day one with basic training commands.

Can you really train your German Shepherd in 5 minutes?

Yes, but only if you follow the schedule, train them most days, and use positive training methods that are fun and rewarding for your GSD.

When To Start Training A German Shepherd Puppy

Your puppy is capable and ready to learn at 6 to 7 weeks old many simple obedience commands. But you shouldnt pressure a puppy this young with perfect obedience. A 1 minutes session is long enough for a young puppy.

After a couple of weeks, your German Shepherd puppy should know to sit, stay, and down, as well as its name. Although a reliable off-leash come usually takes about 6 to 8 weeks of proper dog training.

Leash training is rather quick when you gently place the leash on your dog or puppy, use food rewards or play, and dont use the leash to jerk your dog around the house or neighborhood.

It took me only about a day to train my German Shepherd to sit using lure and reward training. This means, I use one of the best, tasty treatsto move her into the position I want, and then reward her with the food.

My GSD took about 7 days to sit and wait at doors before barging out, but

She only takes a day to unlearn this behavior if I relax on it and let her out without waiting!

A simple trick, such as spin took me only a day, but more complicated tricks could take weeks or months. Something complicated like staying in place with tons of distractions might take you at least 6 months to work up to.

Think of it this way: In school, you didnt start with calculus. You started with basic math, then geometry, algebra, and so on. Dont rush the learning or youll take longer to train your German Shepherd.

How To Do Clicker Training For German Shepherds

Clicker training is a popular reward-based training method. Its a great option for German Shepherd owners because its direct. The dog wants to please their owner, and is a simple way of letting your dog know what you want so you can instantly reward them once they comply.

If youre interested in clicker training your dog, the good news is that you only need one thing: a clicker. A clicker is a small plastic device with a button makes a distinctive clicking noise when you press it.

There are tons of different clickers on the market, and they all pretty much do the same thing. The brand and model you choose will be based largely on personal preference. The difference is mostly in the sound: some are loud, while others make a softer clicking noise.

Youll want to find a clicker that you wont lose, and that is comfortable to use. Some, such as the Downtown Pet Supply clicker, come with a bracelet so you can wear the clicker around your wrist during training sessions.

Others, such as the Starmark Pro-training clicker, have a keyring and can easily be attached to your house keys, which is particularly useful if youre using the clicker to help with potty training. Its also great to be able to train on-the-go.

Whatever clicker you choose, the methodology is much more important than the hardware involved. When clicker training your dog the most important thing is consistency.

Heres a simplified step-by-step guide to clicker training:

Training A German Shepherd Positive Interaction

How to Understand and Train your Crazy German Shepherd Dogs 101!

The best way to promote positive interaction and socialization is by bringing a new dog to the pack.

There are many problems may arise when German shepherds interact with others such as a territorial dispute, aggressive behaviors, and more.

With that said, its imperative to follow these following German shepherd training tips strictly to avoid potential drawbacks:

  • Never leave the two dogs unattended as it may lead to violence that may result in injuries, especially for the new dog.
  • Just like any other habits, the best German shepherd training tip is to take it slowly and calmly.
  • Vaccinate both the dogs so there may be no chances of infection.
  • Familiarize both dogs to the scent of the other so they may not act aggressively later on.
  • It is best to introduce both of them in a location where theyve never been before. This is to avoid their mindset of their territory getting threatened.
  • Include the new dog when training an older German shepherd.

German shepherds are energetic. The best way to conserve YOUR energy is to give them the opportunity to play with a dog as energetic as them.

Additionally, training an older German shepherd will tend to become less exciting due to less activity. Having another dog to stimulate their very existence will prove to help them become more energetic.

With that said, you must understand that you wont always be there for your German shepherd.

How To Use Your Voice To Train Your German Shepherd

During training, pay attention to your tone. Dont use a happy/high tone when you need a more authoritative/low tone. Dont expect them to understand the verbal command when your tone doesnt match.

Match your tone to your message for the most effective communication.

Use a clear voice in the right tone and volume while commanding your dog . With time, you will give commands once and your dog will obey.

What I Love About Training A German Shepherd

I would have to say that German Shepherds are one of my all-time favorite dogs to own and train. They are incredibly smart, loyal and biddable. Yet its important to remember they can be stubborn and strong willed.

Training a German Shepherd with online dog training takes a clear headed approach with little time for nonsense. Basically, show them what you want them to do, help them learn how to do it and then stand back. They are a no-nonsense breed.

There are a variety of types of German Shepherds, namely working lines and show lines, yet even further split up between American show lines and German show lines / Sieger dogs.

I am not a great fan of the show line dogs because I think, in my opinion, that these breedings have strayed from the original intent. The dogs are too big and bulky. I prefer more medium sized GSDs along the working lines.

German Shepherds are some of the most amazing dogs in their dedication to their owners and love the structure of training and live for interaction with their people.

Positive Reinforcement Produces Positive Results

Your German Shepherd will respond best to training with positive reinforcement. Yelling or physical punishment will cause this intelligent breed to mistrust you.

Reward good behavior with treats or praise or both. Its the best way to show your German Shepherd that hes doing it right and its a motivator for him to continue with this behavior.

Remember earlier when I said that your German Shepherd actually wants to please you?

Well, once your dog has mastered the behavior, you can remove the treats and reward only with praise hell relish in it all the same.

You know by now that there are heaps of different training programs. Each program has a specific focus, function, and outcome.

Well take a closer look at some of these in future posts. So, for now, lets look at two basic programs

Get Your German Shepherds Full Attention

You must have your dogs full attention before hell learn anything. Pick a quiet place, with little or no distractions.

To begin with, your back yard is the best place since the smells are familiar and so also the surroundings.

If you were in a park for instance you have no control over the distractions. Like other dogs and their owners, the scent of other animals, children playing, or a Frisbee whizzing by.

Once both you and your dog are confident in the training, then you can step it up by moving it to a place with more distractions.

Socializing A German Shepherd

Socialization is the process of exposing your dog to new people, environments, and situations in a positive manner. This helps them become more confident and accustomed to the world around them.

With German shepherds, its especially vital you get them accustomed to people and other animals this will help curb their high guarding drive and ensure they know whats dangerous and what isnt.

Tips for How to Socialize Effectively

Here, well quickly give a rundown of some key socialization tips. For further guidance, we advise checking out the American Kennel Clubs in-depth guide.

Slow and steady

Socialization is a lengthy process. Its important to be patient with your pup and take it at their pace.

When you introduce them to something new for the first time, make sure you do so in a way thats not overwhelming. For example, if you want to introduce your German shepherd pup to other dogs, you wouldnt take them to a park where there are dozens upon dozens of dogs, many of which could be unleashed or even aggressive. Instead, you would first introduce them to a dog thats leashed and well-mannered, ideally from some distance.

How to make experiences positive

Whenever you introduce your German shepherd to something new, make sure to give them puppy-friendly treats and praise. This will help them to associate whatever theyre being exposed to with a pleasurable experience.

How Long Will I Have To Train My German Shepherd Daily

How To Train German Shepherd Puppy – 6 months old – Day One Lesson One with Hadley

Be prepared to train your German Shepherd for at least 10 to 15 minutes a day. You should practice basic obedience training, but also include fun training games to keep them interested in their training and engaged with you.

Youll want to break up the 10 to 15 minutes throughout the day to make sure your German Shepherd doesnt get bored of the same routine commands.

Aim for five three-minute sessions daily in the beginning, as a minimum.

There are exceptions to this rule since your GSD is a working breed and some GSDs will enjoy training for longer. But start with no more than a few minutes in a short session and gradually build onto each individual session longer times.

During each session work on just one or two commands so that your dog learns the right way to perform the command. You can add in another command they know if theyre struggling to pay attention and keep the session positive and interesting.

Ready to start using games during your German Shepherd training?

Then youll enjoy these fun German Shepherd games for obedience training to help your dog stay active, alert, and ready for their daily sessions.
