How To Pick A German Shepherd Puppy

How are you supposed to know which dog to choose from? They are all going to be adorable. How can you tell which one will grow up to be the type of dog that you were looking for?

If you are not prepared to deal with it, trying to avoid getting a dog that has undergone trauma. Signs of trauma, like anxiety, distance, or antisocial behavior can be indicators of this. If there is any suspicious behavior from the breeder or anything that gives you cause to question the way that they care for their dogs, then you should not hesitate to seek a different breeder.

Make sure that the puppy you are choosing has just as much energy as their peers. Make sure that it is relatively easy for you to develop a connection with the dog before purchasing it. If he does not approach you or does not seem interested in developing a connection, they may have experienced trauma, or they may simply not like you. Some dogs simply don’t enjoy affection, and in many cases, this does not change when they become adults.

However, you must consider all aspects. If you are looking for a dog that will primarily be guarding your house or business, and we’ll be spending ample time alone, then perhaps it is wise to choose a dog that fares well on its own.

Baby German Shepherd Dog

German Shepherd Dogs have many dedicated fans and are one of the most beloved dog breeds.

As adults, they can grow to be quite large and intimidating. They are also cute and playful as puppies.

However, the majority of puppies are purchased between 8-12 weeks of age so we miss this wonderful period in their lives.

What happens in those first weeks? This article will take a look at how the German Shepherd develops from their birth to eight weeks old.

How Do German Shepherds Socialize

As flock guardian dogs, these shepherds have a firm pack mentality that makes them responsive to training and eager to please. One of the best ways to socialize a German Shepherd to a baby is to help them accept the infant as a fellow pack member.

One of this breeds strongest traits is its strong protective instinct. A german shepherds strength and sturdy build, however, make supervision around babies necessary. Otherwise, they might try to play with an infant the same way they might play with another dog.

How To Help Separation Anxiety

Six weeks old is very young to be away from their mother and siblings, and most breeders dont allow puppies to leave their first home until eight weeks old.

At 6-weeks-old your German Shepherd puppy needs a gentle touch, as they may have separation anxiety from being away from their families at such a young age.

In the beginning, your dog may follow you around a lot. This is normal and expected, but you need to get them used to not always being in the same room as you.

If you dont get them use to staying on their own, they may cry or bark when left on their own.

Their separation anxiety may increase if not addressed early on .

Hit The Ground Running

How to Take Care of a German Shepherd

Save yourself some stress by setting up your home to take care of your new GSD puppy.

Youve been waiting for months or even years to bring home your new puppy!

But, dont let the excitement overwhelm you.

Instead, focus on what you can do now to prepare yourself to feel confident that you understand how to care for your German Shepherd puppy.

Plan for your new puppys arrival by having all of the necessary supplies on hand. Have their special puppy-safe area already set up for them.

  • Choose an area for their bed where the family spends much of their time so your pup isnt alone for too long.
  • Place their bed in a corner of the room, out of the way of busy footpaths.
  • Make sure their bed is away from cold drafts or hot heaters.
  • Pick a place to put their food and water dishes that will not cause your family to trip over them while theyre eating and drinking.

Keep your pup in their special room when you cant watch them. It only takes two seconds for them to soil the carpet, eat a table leg, or chew an electrical cord.

Be sure to use the pet-safe baby gates instead of closing doors. Keeping doors shut prevents your dog from seeing you, and this can cause anxiety and stress, especially in a GSD that craves and needs human attention.

Does A German Shepherd Make A Good Family Pet

Yes, German shepherds make great family pets. They are loving and particularly loyal. This is partly down to their herding background and mentality. They are a dog that does have guarding instincts, and that can be protective over younger children. They have a lot of energy, and enjoy interactions, training, and playing games. Given that they love long walks, they can be a great option as a family pet. While many people are nervous of German shepherds due to their size, they are mainly a soft and gentle breed. As they are so intelligent, they are easy to train, which is important when purchasing a family dog. Training is essential in ensuring that your German shepherd is a suitable pet.

As they can be quite strong willed, if you are not training your dog enough, this can bring out its bad traits, such as aggression, stubbornness and potentially destructive behavior.

Beginning Of Socialization Of Baby Gsd Dog

They will likely show some sight and hearing and be able to explore their surroundings with their unsteady gait.

This milestone marks the start of the socialization phase, which is a crucial stage in their development. The lessons they learn now will shape their behavior and personality for the rest their lives.

They might engage other puppies in clumsy play or show body language like tail wagging, for the first time.

German Shepherds And Children

Adult German Shepherds can range from being calm and patient to bouncy and boisterous, depending on their personality, training and socialisation. Some can make great family pets in homes with children of all ages, but dogs should always be supervised around young children.

Make sure you can recognise the signs of unhappiness or anxiety in your dog to help avoid any conflicts. German Shepherds can be nervous of strangers so make sure theyre never left unsupervised. Be careful if you are introducing a German Shepherd to younger children or adults unfamiliar with the breed as they often dont know their own strength.

Things To Prepare For The Arrival Of Your German Shepherd Puppies

If you found out your GSD is pregnant, prepare the necessary items to assist her in caring for her litter. Consider buying the following things in advance:

  • Whelping box, washable vet bed, cardboard box, heat pad, lamp, blankets, pillows, towels

The mother GSD and her litter need a quiet place to stay. It should be spacious, clean, and comfortable. If money is not an issue, you may purchase a commercial whelping box and a washable vet bed. But if you want to be thrifty, you can just make use of a clean cardboard box. Make sure they stay warm by providing a heating pad and lamp. You may add blankets, pillows, towels, or even old newspapers and a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel. Be careful though because puppies might get entangled and suffocated if the blanket, pillows, and towels are not taut.

  • Puppy milk replacer, baby bottle, or feeding syringe

If the litter is abandoned or orphaned, ask your vet to prescribe milk formulated for German shepherd puppies. Purchase a baby bottle or syringe for feeding. In some cases, these things are also necessary for a mother GSD who couldnt produce enough milk or newborns who have poor suckle reflex.

  • Weighing scale
  • Cotton balls or washcloth, suction bulb syringe

Be Ready When She Needs You

Part of sitting back and watching as your German Shepherd gives birth is also knowing that she may need you, and, if so be ready.

If you have done the proper preparations, everything will be ready in case of an emergency or even a small hiccup. Here are some warning signs of being aware of as you watch the process and when you need to intervene:

  • Your GSD has shown signs of going into labor, including a temperature below 100 degrees, and does not end up going into labor with 24 hours.
  • A puppy has only come halfway out, and mom seems to be struggling.
  • She appears to be in pain, is yelping, or crying.
  • One of her breaks in between puppies lasts more than 4 hours, and you know there are more pups to come. Typically, a long break will happen halfway through that can be up to 4 hours. But past that, there could be something wrong.
  • She is having contractions for more than 45 minutes without another puppy coming.

If any of these issues occur or you notice something that doesnt feel quite right, call your vet immediately. Hopefully, it is something the vet can talk you through over the phone to ensure moms and pups safety.

If there is something more complicated, you will need to take your girl to the vet. This will always be the last case scenario because you dont want to move your German Shepherd during birth. This is another reason the buddy system is a great step to take. Its always helpful to have a second set of hands available.

Training Goal #: Impulse Control

Learning to control their impulses is important for all puppies, and for the GSD, it can be one of the most important ways to curb problem behaviors to which this breed is prone if allowed to become bored: behaviors such as excessive barking, digging, aggressive chewing, and inappropriate chasing .

The key to impulse control is getting your dog to focus on you. This will have beneficial effects for all the rest of your training efforts, especially in AKC dog sports like Obedience and Rally.

Require that your puppy sit before getting food, playing with an exciting toy, going outside to play, or any other favorite activity. As your GSD puppy advances in obedience training and knows more commands, you can require more advanced commands or tricks in order to receive treats or play.

The puppies will gradually open their eyes for the first time in 2 weeks. They will be curious so expect them to move around to inspect their surroundings. Instead of crawling, they attempt to use their legs even though their legs may shake. Check their weight to see if they are gaining well and continue keeping them warm and clean.

Sam Shephard is an experienced German Shepherd owner and has learned throughout the years how to optimize the breed’s health and wellness.

German Shepherd Dogs are one of the most popular dog breeds on the planet. They are strong, loyal and a pleasure to be around. These dogs, however, require a great deal of care.

This breed is known for shedding and they are also prone to a number of health conditions. If you want to make sure that your German Shepherd has the happiest life possible, the best option is to make sure that you start caring for them at a young age. In this article, we are going to describe the best ways for you to take care of a young German Shepherd puppy.

Dont Overlook Your Dogs Needs

One of the most important things to remember is that a dog that doesnt feel neglected will be better-behaved. Daily walks and positive attention will help your dog maintain a calm mind. New toys or spoiling your dog are unnecessary measures.

The more calm leadership you demonstrate, the more your German Shepherd will accept your new babys place in the pack. A dog that treats every human in the household as a leader is a dog that will relate well to the rest of their family.

Tips For Socializing Your Pup

One of the first things that you will want to do with your dog is socialize it. The best way to do this is to introduce it to all manner of people and dogs as early as possible. You will want it to get to know people of different sizes, ethnic backgrounds, and ages, so that it becomes familiar with these types of people as soon as possible.

It’s also important to get your dog to bond with other types of animals. One of the best ways to do this is to enroll your puppy in a training school. This will not only help your dog get to know other dogs, but it will help them become properly trained.

Training Goal #: Socialization

What its like to Take Care of a German Shepherd Puppy for a day

Puppies of all breeds have a critical socialization window that closes at 12 to 16 weeks of life, and your GSD puppy is no exception. In fact, for GSDs, who by nature are protective guardians, socialization is extra important so that your puppy learns which strangers are friendly and not a threat.

GSDs are very observant, and your puppy will pick up on your cues and reactions around new people and new situations. During this critical period, having exposure to many different kinds of people in non-threatening situations will help your puppy be confident among friendly strangers rather than fearful or aggressive. And even during times of social and physical distancing, you can still socialize your puppy safely.

Proper socialization cannot be overemphasized for this breed as Adams notes, The foundation for most training is confidence. It is critical that the GSD puppy is well socialized from an early age onward. Safely exposing the puppy to new sights, sounds, and smells is absolutely critical for development. Good socialization translates to confidence.

Certified dog trainer and CGC evaluator Jacqui Foster, CPDT-KA, echoes this sentiment: I tend to lean more towards developing self-confidence in the puppy. For this I recommend short, fun, three-minute games that engage the puppy with the owner as well as in noises, weird and uneven surfaces, family members, etc., throughout the day. A confident puppy is a happy puppy.

When To Start Puppy Food

  • You can start puppy food when you notice signs of teething.
  • The mother is reluctant to breastfeed them.
  • The mother is not producing enough milk for the little dogs.

Proper nutrition will be crucial during this phase. Thus, dont use any commercial food labeled puppy food. First, consult your vet on the best food to start for your puppy.

Patience And Consistency Are Important

No dog owner is perfect.

One can easily give in to frustrations when training a puppy. But yelling and punishment will only make your puppy more hyper.

Also, be consistent. Stick to the rules you set for your hyper German Shepherd.

Anyway, your dogs hyperactivity did not happen overnight. So fixing it will not happen overnight either.

But committing to do the right thing will get your dog to the result you want.

New-borns cannot see or hear until 5 to 8 days of age. Puppies do not stand until at least 2 to 4 weeks of age. Same for the barking behavior.

If left in the litter or orphaned, or if its mother is unable to produce enough milk, or if the suckle reflex for the puppy is poor, ask your vet for the Lactose-Free weaning milk prescribed for the German Shepherd Puppies.

Check if the temperature is warm enough as the puppies cannot control their temperature at this stage. During the first week of puppies, the room should be between 30º and 32ºC. For the second week, it can be slightly reduced between 26º and 28º and around 22º after the third week.

You do not need to bathe them this time, because the mother GSD cleans her litter by constantly pressing.

If the puppies are orphaned, you can wash them gently using a warm and damp cloth. Dont forget to change the mattresses daily to keep the area clean and dry to avoid discomfort.
