A Short History Of The German Shepherd

As the name of the breed suggests, the German Shepherd originates from Germany. The history of the breed dates back to the late 1800s. In the 1850s, German dog breeders were trying to standardize dog breeds to preserve the best traits that assisted their job of herding sheep. This was practiced within small communities of people in Germany where shepherds bred dogs.

German breeders wanted to have a dog that had the necessary skills for herding sheep such as intelligence, strength, speed, endurance, and a strong sense of smell. The breeders got results but the ability and the appearance of dogs differed from one community to another. As a result, the Phylax Society was formed in 1891 with the purpose of creating native dog breeds but it was disbanded in just a few of years due to internal disagreements on the traits of the dogs the organization should promote. Nevertheless, Germanys efforts to create a dog breed of the nations own continued.

In 1899, Max von Stephanitz, an ex-member of the Phylax Society and a former student of the Berlin Veterinary College, was shown a dog during one of his visits to a dog show named Hektor Linksrhein. The dog was agile, loyal, fast, intelligent, and appeared pleasing to the eye. The dog satisfied his beliefs of what a working dog should be, and he purchased him.

Why Breed Big German Shepherds

There are several reasons for breeding larger than normal German Shepherds.

Breeders of GSDs that will be trained for physically demanding tasks like search and rescue or military and police work can cultivate large size, muscular strength, endurance, and athleticism.

Are these big lugs good as family pets?

Many potential owners seek out GSDs for their protective nature.

Breed experts often say that males tend to be more protective of their home territory and females tend to be more protective of their human family.

Owners interested in training their dogs to guard their property and family might also be interested in larger German Shepherds, both male and female.

Besides working ability and protectiveness, many people are simply fans of bigger dogs, and the idea of a giant German Shepherd is very appealing.

How exactly do you get a larger German Shepherd? Lets look at how breeders select for larger than normal size.

If you dont have a lot of time or energy to devote to dog grooming, then the King Shepherd is not a good choice.

King Shepherds demand a fair amount of grooming. Brisk brushing not only improves your King Shepherds appearance, it increases blood circulation and makes him healthier.

The bonding that takes place during grooming is an excellent experience for both of you.

The King Shepherds coat is very weather resistant. While he needs frequent brushing, you should bathe him only when its necessary.

Daily vacuuming of shed and brushed hair and frequent mopping of paw prints is a reality but worth the effort in my mind.

How Much Exercise Do German Shepherds Need

German Shepherd puppies and adolescents should have moderate exercise only multiple walks, fetch games, or playing with another dog.

But the growing bones and ligaments in a young dog can be irreparably damaged by too much exercise or the wrong kind of exercise. At this age, there should be no forced running . Restrict jumping as much as possible.

Once the dog is mature, the amount of exercise needed will vary according to the dog’s energy level. But all German Shepherds, to maintain fitness, need brisk walking every day and all-out running in a safe, enclosed area as often as possible.

Dogs from working lines typically want a lot more exercise.

Mental exercise is even more important for German Shepherds. Mental exercise means the dog gets to participate in interesting activities that keep his intelligent mind stimulated.

This might be a dog sport such as agility, rally obedience, musical freestyle, tracking, flyball, herding, or schutzhund. It might be interactive dog toys, or a homemade obstacle course, or learning tricks, or playing games such as Hide ‘n Seek.

Some of these activities are included in my training book, Teach Your Dog 100 English Words.

About AKC & Other dog registries: AKC is the only All breed registry with a DNA program -Beware of puppy mill registries such as APR , & AKA, CKC- not the canadian kennel club this is what they are copying-as well as others. You are supporting puppy mills if you buy a dog with these registries as they are mainly for puppy mill breeders you know what you get with AKC because of record inspections and DNA. All Buyers should beware! Here is a good example: two APR kennels close to me raise GSD’s. Both are breeding females that are not german shepherds but are registering them as German Shepherds and the registry does not care. I have personally seen it and so have many others. Support “good breeders” and no matter what the breed buy AKC.

    Skeletal Health And Supplementation

Musculoskeletal disorders are debilitating conditions that are often associated with genetic makeup, malnutrition, and stress-related events. Some breeds like the German shepherd, are predisposed to a variety of different skeletal disorders, including but not limited to: canine hip dysplasia, Cauda equina syndrome, and osteoarthritis. These conditions can be a result of poor breeding or induced by intense exercise and poor diet.

Canine hip dysplasia is an orthopedic condition resulting from abnormal development of the hip joint and surrounding tissue causing the instability and partial dislocation of the hip joint, resulting in pain, inflammation, lameness, and potentially osteoarthritis of the joint. German shepherds are genetically predisposed to CHD and the University of Veterinary Medicine in Germany found its prevalence estimated to be approximately 35% of veterinary cases associated with the disorder.

Osteoarthritis is one of the main contributors of musculoskeletal pain and disabilities that commonly affect German shepherds. Mechanical stress, oxidative damage and inflammatory mediators combine to induce the gradual degeneration of the articular cartilage in the joint, resulting in reduced muscle mass, pain, and locomotion.

Vitamins such as A and D also have crucial roles in bone development and maintenance by regulating bone and calcium metabolism. Adequate levels should be incorporated into a German shepherd diet to promote a healthy musculoskeletal system.

    Whats The Difference In Appearance

As we mentioned before, King Shepherd is larger and its also more rugged than the German Shepherd.

If you purchase a King shepherd, youll find that they come with one of two different types of coats the first is a straight coarse coat and the second is a wavy long-haired coat. On the other hand, the German Shepherds coat will either be long-haired, double or plush.

Since hes a hybrid German Shepherd, naturally, King Shepherd resembles his parent. But there are more appealing differences between them. The King Shepherd is more powerful.

Handsome is without a doubt the first word that comes to mind when you look at this beauty of a dog.

German Shepherds could be white, black, tan, grey, or have a sable saddle while King Shepherds can come in white and black colors and might also be a tan color with a hint of brown and black markings or they can be a grayish silver color with some hints of black on their coat.

Even as puppies King Shepherds are identifiable because of their thick ears and teddy-bear faces.
