How Did The Australian Shepherd Get His Name

By | Submitted On August 25, 2011

You may not have realized it but history tells us that the Australian Shepherd breed most likely originated far from Australia in the Pyrenees Mountains between Spain and France. The breed’s descendants were Spanish herding dogs that accompanied Basque shepherds. These Basque shepherds were exporters of Merino sheep to Australia in the early days of the colonies. Along with the sheep went the dogs to help with herding them.

These dogs became very successful in Australia and integral to the success of the Australian ranchers whose herds ranged over vast areas. It was here that the breed came to be known as the “Australian Shepherd”. They became the favorite of many ranchers and cowboys for their exceptional talent, energy, and dedication to the work. Although they have been called many names over the years such as Pasteur Dog, Blue Heeler, Spanish Shepherd, Bob-Tail, New Mexican Shepherd and California Shepherd, those names are no longer frequently used. Today these dogs are most widely known as Australian Shepherds and commonly called Aussies.

When it comes to health, these dogs are always in good condition. Aussies are very energetic and require daily exercise and mental challenge to remain well-adjusted pets. Aussies now come in all sizes from standard, to miniature, to teacup providing a size option to fit almost any household. These beautiful dogs make wonderful long-term friends as their life expectancy is about 12 – 15 years.

How Much And What Should A Shiloh Shepherd Eat

These big boys can put away a lot of food. You can give your dog between 5½ to 7 cups of high-quality dry kibble or 1800 to 2500 calories per day.

Divide this amount of food into 2 meals to reduce the risk of bloat.

The amount can vary depending on your dogs age, size, and metabolism, so youll want to consult your vet on the exact amount your Shiloh needs.

Your Shiloh Shepherd should be fed high-quality dry dog food made especially for large breeds.

  • Poultry bones

Once your pup turns 1, you can start feeding him just once a day. Sometimes, adult Shiloh Shepherd dogs may eat two lighter servings.

History Of A German Shepherd Dog

German Shepherds are the descendants of a German Herding Dog family. The credit for the existence of this great breed goes to one man named Captain Max Von Stephanitz. He was a career captain in the German cavalry in the late 19th century and he had an aim to introduce a German breed for herding dogs. After retiring from the military in 1899, Stephanitz began his second mission of ding experimentation with dog breeds. He studies the British techniques of breeding and went through the different cities of Germany in search of a good breed of dog in the dog shows.

His search ended one day of 1899 when he saw a wolf-like dog. The dog was large, strong, and sharp. Stephanitz bought that dog, named it as Hector Lingshein, and formed a society to find a breed out of its ancestors.

Stephanitz intended to breed this dog as a herding breed but in those days, industrialization started growing fast in Germany and the need for herding dogs started reducing. Therefore, he decided that this breed will be a working dog that will work for the military and police.

He had strong connections being in the army. So, he convinced the government to accept and use this breed. In World War 1, German Shepherd worked as a messenger, guard, Red cross dog, and supply carrier. After this war, German Shepherd got famous in the USA and was taken home by many soldiers. So WW1 became the reason for the popularity of the German Shepherd.
