Adopting A German Shepherd

Apollo the amazing German Shepherd | Dogs Trust Loughborough

A German Shepherd is a wonderful and loyal companion for children, but not everyone has the room, time, or money to own one. Because German Shepherds are big dogs, they require a large area of their yard to roam. If you live in a small apartment or have a house with limited space, this could be a problem. But thats where German Shepherd rescue groups can help. Theyll offer you a safe and loving place for your dog to call her own.

Most German Shepherds are healthy dogs, but some suffer from health issues. These issues can include hip dysplasia, congenital defects, heart conditions, or some genetic diseases. When a German Shepherd owner finds out he or she has these kinds of problems, he or she may not be able to afford to pay the high costs of veterinary bills and surgeries.

So its important to get the right kind of care before your dog becomes ill or develops a serious condition. Your German Shepherd rescue organization can provide you with financial and loving support in dealing with the crisis.

German Shepherds Need Lots Of Exercises

They live in a rugged environment and should be kept physically active. German Shepherds that are raised in loving homes tend to be friendly, healthy, and confident dogs. Raising them in secure environments helps them become respectful and stable around other dogs and people. But unless you plan to keep your German Shepherd as a pet, he or she will need to be exercised regularly.

If youre looking to adopt a German Shepherd, consider whether its more cost-effective to adopt from a German Shepherd rescue group or directly from a breeder. While German Shepherds do cost more than the general population, they also possess special qualities. For example, theyre highly intelligent and have a strong desire to please their owners.

From guard dogs and watchdogs to K9 companions to sniffer dogs, therapy dogs, service dogs, and household companions, there isnt anything the German Shepherds cannot do. Max Emil Friedrich von Stephanitz is considered the father of the German Shepherd dog breed.

His efforts on German sheepdogs led to the creation of this wonderful dog breed. Physically, the German Shepherd is a large dog weighing between 66 and 88 pounds or 30 and 40 kilograms. They measure about 25 inches at withers. They are known for a medium coat that needs plenty of brushing.

How Do I Pick A Good Rescue German Shepherd

German Shepherd Puppies Ct Rescue

You might ask yourself what kind of German Shepherd you should adopt and rehome. You can look for outgoing dogs. You can tell that by observing their body language when you first meet.

If the dogs gesture is warm and inviting, you might want to choose that because they are confident and trusting. However, if you are also not down to unlimited patience, you can avoid a shy German Shepherd.

These dogs can be a little bit of work because they are afraid and run away from you. If you are outgoing and are a very hands-on person, you might not enjoy your German Shepherd because of its shyness.

However, this is only a guide, and if the dogs personality is not a big deal for you, you can pick any dog you want. Dogs can be trained and can also be flexible like some people are. If you love a challenge, you can pick any dog you want.

What To Expect From A German Shepherd Puppy

Although you have your expectations, its best to take note of the following. It will help you prepare for your pet, especially in the first few days of living together.

As you allow your pet to adjust, do your best to create a stress-free environment for it. Always supervise it as it familiarizes itself with its new home.

At the same time, prepare yourself for your pets habits in the first weeks:

Noisy Sleeping

Snoring is not that common in German Shepherds. Still, it would be best to prepare yourself for loud noises when your pet is asleep.

Moderate Training

German Shepherds are highly trainable. It simply means they respond well, especially to positive reinforcement. For this reason, you may need to allot an hour or so each day for your dogs training.

Squeaky Toys

Out of all toys, your pet will love the squeaky ones. For this reason, prepare for a lot of loud squeaks every time your pet is active.

Heartworm Prevention For Dogs

Heartworm prevention for dogs is an important concern for every pet owner. Prevention is an important part of providing essential care, and heartworm disease prevention for dogs is something every owner can do. Consider this:

Some preventives only prevent heartworms, some protect pets from heartworms and intestinal parasites, and some protect pets from many different parasites, including heartworms, intestinal worms, fleas, ticks, and mites. Because veterinarians know which parasites are common in the area in which they practice, owners should talk to their pets doctor about what product or products will be best for their pets.

Cts Attorney General Moves For State Custody Of 28 German Shepherds Seized In Higganum Abuse Case

HARTFORD, CT – Connecticuts attorney general moved for state custody of 28 neglected German shepherd dogs seized from a home in Higganum last month.

Once the state receives full custody, it will find permanent homes that best suit the needs of the dogs.

According to Attorney General William Tong, Dean Moore allegedly left his home on Nedobity Road in Higganum on April 18 for a 6-and-a-half-week family vacation to the Philippines. Over that time, 23 German Shepherd dogs were left in the care of temporary caretakers.

Tong said the caretakers discovered that the dogs had been left in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, with inadequate shelter from the weather. Only weeks before Moores departure, two dogs had given birth to a total of 19 puppies, which were kept outside in dangerously cold temperatures and unprotected from other adult dogs. Another dog was pregnant and was also due to give birth.

Moore had not left sufficient food for the duration of his trip, and provided no instructions about medication for the dogs, Tong said. Within days of Moores departure, six puppies died, and the remaining ones were sick. When contacted by a caretaker about an injured puppy, Tong said Moore refused to authorize medical care and told the person to let nature take its course.

The caretakers contacted animal control to report the situation. Animal control officers found the surviving puppies suffered from contagious parasites. An adult dog suffered from untreated Lyme disease.

The National German Shepherd Rescue Association Is The Largest German Shepherd Rescue Organization In The United States

Lost and Pound: Woofgang Rescue 7/5

At its inception in 1985, the NSDFA realized that there were more German Shepherds in shelters and rescues than were being cared for in loving homes. Because of this, they set out to find homes for as many dogs as possible. NSA constantly seeks dogs and holds regular dog-walker reunions with owners who have lost their dogs. You can contact NSDFA directly through their website.

The German Shepherd rescue group runs a huge website called Rescue Germany Shepherds Web. This site contains much information about the organization as well as tips and advice about finding a dog. You can also read testimonials from people who have found their dogs in German Shepherd rescue groups.

Although German Shepherds are known as German Shepherd Rescue Ct, they are loving and gentle. Many of these dogs end up at animal shelters and rescues because their owners were unable to take care of them. NSA emphasizes working with families in finding good homes for the dogs by using a mix of professional, German Shepherd rescue groups, along with matching volunteers who love dogs and people.

Mila is a beautiful black and tan female purebred AKC registered German Shepherd for adoption in Bristol, CT, near Hartford. Mila is just 3 years old and weighs 60 lbs.

Mila is housebroken and well behaved. She needs a home without other dogs. She has no experience around children or cats, but would likely be fine with respectful children and dog-friendly cats.

Mila was enrolled in police dog training until it was determined that she was too small for active police duty. She is a beautiful dog with a long coat and big brown eyes.

Mila wll need a home with owners who have experience with the German Shepherd Breed preferably someone retired who has worked with police dogs. Milas owner loves her very much, and wants the best home for her. He adopted her from a co-worker, who had adopted her when she was let go by the police dog training service.

She remembers her police training well, and unfortunately, took down a neighbor who was using her owners back yard as a short cut very early one morning. She took him down by taking him by the arm, but released him when her owner gave her the command. The neighbor sustained an injury to his arm as a result of the situation, so the owner has taken careful measures to ensure this situation does not happen again.

Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
