The Haven Kennels Puppy Purchase Process
You have made a well-thought decision to bring a German Shepherd puppy into your home. And you would like to get a Haven Kennels German Shepherd. Thank you as I always take that as a compliment and an honor. You have made your decision and now I have my decision to make whether you are the right home for one of our babies. These arent just puppies to Doug and I. These puppies are members of our family! We are there when they are born. I sleep on a cot in the puppy room for the first six weeks of their life to make sure our German Shepherd puppies are well socialized and are safe from any harm. A lot of things can happen to puppy in those early days. A mother dog can accidentally lay on a pup injuring it or a pup can choke on something. We are there 24/7 to make sure the puppies are okay. Rarely will we have a puppy ready for you immediately. All of our litters have waiting lists, and the wait can be a long time so if you want to have a puppy right away, we may not have one for you. And to be perfectly honest with you, that is the case with most responsible and ethical dog breeders.
Description Of The German Shepherd
Regardless of whether it comes from show or working lines, the GSD is 22 to 26 inches tall at the shoulders and weighs between 50 and 95 pounds. There should be noticeable masculinity of males and femininity of females. German shepherd puppies for sale should be outgoing, friendly, and inquisitive. As he becomes older, you will notice your German shepherd will be polite but aloof with strangers and openly hostile against intruders and threats. Show lines, including pet dogs, are generally less intense and do not require as much exercise as working GSDs. The breed standard is similar between the lines, the major difference being on the interpretation of joint angles. American show dogs, for example, have an extreme angulation of the hind legs leading to an exaggerated slope of the topline. A German shepherd is a medium-large powerful dog with tremendous stamina. She has a distinctive head with a slight dome shape to the top skull and large open upright ears. Eyes are medium, almond-shaped, and steady in their gaze. The breed is significantly longer than tall, a build that supports trotting effortlessly over long distances with short explosions of speed. A German shepherds athleticism has ensured its longstanding excellence and versatility in police and military operations, search and rescue, bomb detection, drug-sniffing, criminal apprehension, agility competitions, Schutzhund, herding trials, physical assistance, and guide dog for the blind.
How Much Does It Cost To Get Everything For My German Shepherd Puppy
If you are just getting your puppy, plan to make several other purchases, including a crate, dog bed, car crate, bowls etc.
The vet costs in the first year of a dogs life are usually much higher than later on, because the dog needs regular vaccinations and puppy wellness checks as well as a spay/neuter surgery. Because the German Shepherd is a large dog which frequently suffers from bloat , many owners elect to have the stomach tacked during the spay/neuter surgery. This will prevent future bloat episodes, but quickly hikes up the cost of this routine procedure to $1,000.

- Choose a breeder that has a good application and interview process.
German Shepherd Puppies Temperament
German Shepherds are one of the most popular breeds of dogs, and its easy to see why. These pups are intelligent, playful, and loyal companions. But German Shepherds are also working dogs, and they have a reputation for being serious and even aloof. They are natural guardians, and they will protect their families from any perceived threat. German Shepherds are also exceptionally trainable, and they excel in a variety of disciplines including obedience, agility, and tracking.
Despite their many talents, German Shepherds are not the right breed for everyone. They require consistent training and socialization, and they need plenty of exercise to stay happy and healthy. If youre looking for a low-maintenance pet, a German Shepherd is probably not the right choice for you. But if youre prepared to commit to training and exercise, youll find that a German Shepherd can be a loyal and loving friend for life.

How Much Exercise Do German Shepherds Need
In General your German Shepherd will be healthiest when getting an average of 1-2 hours of exercise each day. Having a big backyard and park nearby is very helpful for owning a big energetic dog like this. Throwing the ball or running with your German Shepherd daily will keep them fit mentally and physically. Like most bug dogs, physical exercise is essential to avoid temperament issues and poor health conditions. By combining this daily exercise with the right amount and type of healthy dog food, you can help your pup live long and avoid unnecessary medical issues.
Many Colors Of The German Shepherd Puppy For Sale
Show dogs emphasize bold colors preferably of the well-known black and tan saddle markings. West German show dogs are often red or mahogany in place of tan. In working lines, you will see darker colors, especially in the DDS dogs. Other colors in a German shepherd for sale are solid black, white, sable, bicolor, blue, liver, and Panda. Panda dogs look like tricolor German Shepherds, a result of a rare KIT gene that causes piebald or a specific expression of white spotting. A sable German shepherd is one with different bands of color on one hair shaft. In the GSD, sable usually shows up as black and tan in a nondescript pattern that does not show a distinct saddle. Some sables look like they have more of a wolf coloration. Blue represents a black German shepherd with a dilution gene that gives the coat a grayish color. Blue and liver GSDs as well as other dilutions receive severe penalty points in the show ring. Nevertheless, blue and liver show up in place of the dark areas in the sable German Shepherd as well as black and tan and bicolor. A white German shepherd can register in the AKC as a purebred but cannot show in conformation classes. Separate registries have established a community for the White German Shepherd whereby owners can show against their peers just like comparable conformation contests in the AKC. A bicolor dog is a black German shepherd with minimal tan markings.

How To Find A German Shepherd Breeder
Before finding out how much German Shepherd puppies cost, you need to know how to find a good breeder.
When searching for a breeder, you want to make sure they are reputable, honest, and ethical. We certainly want to avoid unethical breeders such as those that run puppy mills. But where do you start, you may ask.
Find a German Shepherd breeder by searching national or local kennel clubs websites and GSD clubs for registered and reliable breeders. Consult trainers, groomers, or vets for breeder references. Ask persons who already own a German Shepherd to recommend and refer you to their breeder.
So, an excellent place to start is the AKC Marketplace or the UK Kennel Clubs Find a Puppy. Next, try national and local German Shepherd clubs for reliable references or search their websites for registered breeders. See as an example the German Shepherd Dog Club of Americas Classified Ads.
You can also find breeder search websites such as these:
Please note that some ways of finding a reputable and ethical breeder are more reliable than others. For example, if you search on puppyfind.com, you can find a puppy that may cost only $600 to buy, but you may only have the phone contact of the seller and no further information. Instead, others like gooddog.com give a link to the breeders website so you can investigate further.

A Deposit Secures Your German Shepherd Puppy
When you are ready to make a commitment to getting a Haven Kennels German Shepherd puppy, we will ask you for a deposit on the pup in the amount of $500 $750. Our deposits, like most breeders, are non-refundable, except under one circumstance. We will refund your deposit if we cannot provide you with a healthy puppy, meeting the criteria you expressed in your application, within 2 years. We require the 2 year period because a lot can happen in the attempted breeding of a female dog. Female dogs can have split heats, hormonal imbalances, or even skip a heat. Deposits can be taken on specific littler and we only take 4 deposits on any one litter even though there may be more puppies produced. If you do not care about specific parentage, we will place you on a chronological reservation list with a deposit of $500. We list planned breedings on our home page so you can make a selection if you want a pup from specific parentage. Occasionally we will have quality puppies available from the use ofour stud dog, Baratheon von Haven. We are very careful about who we breed our boy to so you can be reassured that one of his puppies are of the same quality as the puppies born here in our kennel.

Which Puppies Are The Most Expensive
Many factors contribute to the high cost of some puppies. For example, breeds in high demand or with rare colorations are often more expensive. In addition, small breeds tend to be more expensive than large breeds, as they are more delicate and require more time and attention.
Puppies trained to perform tricks or have already begun obedience training are typically more expensive than untrained puppies. Ultimately, a puppys cost depends on various factors, including the breed, size, and training. However, all puppies are sure to bring joy and love into your life.

Where Can You Find Cheap German Shepherd Dogs
You will be able to find GSD puppies who cost much less than $1,500. The question is do you want to purchase a dog with questionable health and temperament?
On Craigslist or similar classified ads, many dog owners sell puppies from oops litters or puppies that they bred on purpose without any health testing. These dogs often are not purebred German Shepherd puppies, but are mixed with e.g. Labradors, Pitbulls or Golden Retrievers. They might be as cheap as $200. If you end up with a dog with genetically based health conditions however, be prepared to spend a multiple of the original purchase price on vet costs!
