Your German Shepherd Dog’s Health
We know that because you care so much about your dog, you want to take good care of her. That is why we have summarized the health concerns we will be discussing with you over the life of your Shepherd. By knowing about health concerns specific to German Shepherd Dogs, we can tailor a preventive health plan to watch for and hopefully prevent some predictable risks.
Many diseases and health conditions are genetic, meaning they are related to your pets breed. There is a general consensus among canine genetic researchers and veterinary practitioners that the conditions weve described herein have a significant rate of incidence and/or impact in this breed. That does not mean your dog will have these problems it just means that she is more at risk than other dogs. We will describe the most common issues seen in German Shepherd Dogs to give you an idea of what may come up in her future. Of course, we cant cover every possibility here, so always check with us if you notice any unusual signs or symptoms.
Why Did Berger Picards Almost Go Extinct
Berger Picards breeding stock was decimated by the ravages of World War I and World War II, which decimated the Berger Picards breeding stock. As a result of trench warfare in the Somme, the breed was almost extinct due to its concentration on farms in north-eastern France. The United States and Canada have approximately 400 Berger Picards.
Want To Train Your German Shepherd With Peace Of Mind
If you havent trained your German Shepherd properly, then this is the perfect time to start. Whatever bad behavior your shepherd has, whether its barking at night or other bad behaviors, using the right training program is the key to having an obedient and happy pup.
The training program I love and highly recommend is Brain Training For Dogs.
With Brain Training For Dogs youll save yourself a ton of time and effort. Instead of banging your head against the wall trying to figure out why your dog wont listen, youll follow a path that has been tried, tested, and most importantly, thats given proven results. Not to mention the fact, youll be able to fit the course around your schedule, not fit your schedule around a trainer or obedience class.
So instead of worrying about whether theyre going to be well-behaved or not, youll only have to worry about how much fun youll have with them!
And in most cases its still going to be:
- Cheaper than hiring a professional.
- Cheaper than replacing everything they might break.
- And definitely cheaper than a lawsuit against you, if they decide to bite someone.
Just imagine how great it will feel to finally be able to trust your German Shepherd completely and never worry whether theyll be naughty or not. Instead, youll have the peace of mind that you have a well-behaved pup, and the boundaries you set for them, will always be there, EVEN IF YOURE NOT.

Such hard-core coprophagic continue to behave long after their peers have developed new interests. Such dogs, which seem to be addicted to the habit, can be described as compulsive.

Dog Eating Poop Other Animals Poop
This scenario usually plays out in rural areas.
Dogs are not true carnivores, which is a myth that many people believe. Dogs and the wolves they evolved from are omnivores.
Omnivores eat meat, but they also can sustain themselves on plants, grasses, and berries.
Animals like cows, horses, deer, rabbits, et cetera, eat plant and grass materials, so their stool is really just processed grass and weeds, and it is attractive to some dogs.

Gsds Are Incredibly Smart
If youre a German Shepherd owner, you have a strong suspicion your dog might actually be smarter than you are. After all, what cant your dog do? These dogs are known for their intelligence and many can learn a new behavior in only a few repetitions. In addition, they have a legendary desire to cooperate and work with us, a trait many see as a wish to please their humans. No wonder this breed excels at so many activities and is a top Obedience competitor. Because German Shepherds are one of the brightest breeds, be sure to be consistent, use positive reinforcement-based methods, provide plenty of mentally stimulating toys, and play brain-challenging games.

Mans Best Amigo: How To Speak To Your Dog In Spanish
Full disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. ?
I have to admit, I have a soft spot in my heart for cute little pups.
Ive mentioned before that Lauren and I have one of our own: an adorable little Dachshund mix that we rescued. We named her Schatzi a German nickname that means little treasure but shes a polyglot pup through and through!
I enjoy keeping up my language studies and talking about Schatzi or to her in other languages including Spanish!
Are there benefits to talking to your dog in the Spanish language? Absolutely! The first obvious benefit is that you get more practice speaking Spanish. Youll get a grasp on the imperative form, as well as basic commands. It can also help your dog to tune in better too, because your dog will learn that those Spanish words are for him. As opposed to English or other languages you may speak to others.
But first, lets start off with the basics How do you say dog in Spanish?
Does It Matter If Your German Shepherds Ears Never Stand Up Naturally
Not at all!
Its not unhealthy for them to have one ear flopped over and even adds to their fun personality.
And, most of the time, this isnt a problem. You should take your dog to the vet to have them complete a thorough vet exam if youre worried. This gives you some reassurance there arent any underlying issues.
Generally, there is no need for concern and your GSD is still totally healthy.

Sit And Stay In Spanish
The two golden commands that every dog should learn are sit and stay.
These two commands are the basics for teaching obedience and the starting point for other tricks, so its good to start here with Spanish dog commands. For sit, you use the imperative form siéntate. And for stay, you can use quieto. It translates to quiet or calm but its used as stay in Spanish.

How To Stop Your German Shepherd Barking
Its nice to have a dog that has your familys safety in mind, but excessive barking can be too much for any family to deal with. If your German shepherd is more vocal than you imagined, there are a few things you can do to curb that behavior. Try any of the following things to keep your dogs barking to a minimum:
Bark on Command
A lot of times dog owners will teach their dogs to bark on command as one of their tricks. Teaching them a cue to bark on command can also be effective when it comes to getting them to bark less. This is because you can also teach them a quiet cue. Make sure you reward the dog for barking on command so they dont continue to bark.
Use Hand Signals
German shepherds can be trained to understand hand signals. If you want to use hand signals as a way to train them to bark less, then start by getting them excited so they bark. Once they begin barking, hold your hand up as though you were about to make a shadow puppet of a quacking duck.
Try to get the dog to focus on the movement of your hand. When they begin to bark, you can open and close your hand. This may take a lot of practice, but they should eventually learn to speak on command when you open your hand in this position. When you want them to bark, make sure you say the word speak along with the hand movement.

Why Do They Call German Shepherds Alsatians
Originally, Alsatian was a German Shepherd dog, but the name was changed to Alsatian after the German French border area of Alsace-Lorraine. German Shepherd Dogs were originally known as German Shepherd Dogs, but were changed back to German Shepherd Dogs in 1977 after a number of campaigns by dog breeders.
What Is A Blue German Shepherd
The Blue German Shepherd is not a mixed breed and is simply a variation of the standard GSD. Therefore, these dogs carry the same characteristics and temperament. However, they are much more rare and are therefore a lot more expensive. For a standard GSD you can expect to pay anywhere between $300 and $700 for a puppy.

Yes And No In Spanish
As with anything, you need to know your basic yes and no. And theyre very simple to remember! Yes is Sí. No is even easier: its No. These are easy to start practising commands with, and you can use them to reinforce what youre saying.
If you want to say a little more, you can say No, no hagas eso, which means No, dont do that. Make sure to be crisp and clear with your no which is natural in Spanish anyway to get your dogs attention.

Dog In Spanish Perro Or Perra
If youre going to talk to your pup in Spanish, you definitely need to know the word for dog in Spanish. That would be perro, with the Spanish rolled r.
What if you want to talk about your puppy in Spanish? Thats easy: puppy in Spanish is perrito, adding the cute ending of -ito which means little or small.
If you want to talk about your dogs size, you can say little dog in Spanish which is perro pequeño or big dog in Spanish which is perro grande.
Now, those are the male forms of the words. If your dog is a girl, you can say perra or perrita for a puppy.

Do German Shepherds Talk
A German Shepherd dog is an adorable, energetic, and driven companion. In addition to their vocal abilities, they are also very active. A study found that some German Shepherds can make sounds as high as 106 decibels. Barks are not the only sounds they make they also howl, whine, moan, and make other strange sounds as well.
When To Stop Taping
When your German Shepherd reaches the age of 9 months, their ears should stand on their own without the need to be taped. If your puppy is 9 months and their ears are still floppy, visit the vet for help.
This could mean that your German Shepherds ears might stay floppy permanently and there is no need to worry.

What To Watch For
Any abnormal symptom could be a sign of serious disease or it could just be a minor or temporary problem. The important thing is to be able to tell when to seek veterinary help and how urgently. Many diseases cause dogs to have a characteristic combination of symptoms, which together can be a clear signal that your German Shepherd Dog needs help.
Stop And Quiet In Spanish
You can use these commands to tell your dog not to do something. To teach him stop in Spanish, say detente. You might say, ¡Detente! No, no ladres.
Another useful phrase to quiet your dog is silencio for quiet. You may know that one already if youre a fan of Harry Potter and the Wizarding World. They take the Spanish word Silencio as the magic word for their silencing charm. Works like magic for pups too!
Your dog may get into things that they shouldnt from time to time. Besides dentente, you can say things like No comas , or sale as go on or shoo. If your dog has jumped up on someone, you can command them to get down with bájate.
