Our breeder had him on Royal Canin, and weve just stuck with that. However, I am not really loving it. I am getting caught up in the fact Royal Canin is the only food sold at my vets office.

My guy would still be eating RC if he didnt have a chicken allergy. We considered going to the RC hypoallergenic dog food but by that time he was already doing well on Acana Pacifica, so thats what we stuck with.

RC has actual nutritionists who test the food, unlike brands like acana. The breeder recommended it, the vet said its fine, and the if you do enough research on the Internet, having a panel of animal nutritionists trumps not having nutritionists backing your brand.

Prescription foods, regardless of who makes them , really do have a purpose if you have an animal that needs them for things like severe food allergies and diseases of body systems like the GI tract and urinary tract, so I wouldn’t get too hung up on what your vet is selling unless your pup needs a prescription diet.

Royal Canin makes decent food. My pup was on the hydrolyzed protein prescription diet to rule out skin sensitivity and food allergies – chicken makes him an itchy guy – and he did well on it. I switched him to another brand because their consumer foods only really contain chicken as the animal protein. He does well on fish based foods. I have friends who feed their dogs consumer Royal Canin products and their dogs thrive on it.
