The History And Origin Of German Shepherd Dog Breed

Solid black German Shepherd puppy for sale

The German Shepherd Dog, one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. As the name implies, they were originated in Germany in the late 1800s. As part of the Herding Group, German Shepherds were generally used for livestock, herding, and guarding sheep. Back then GSDs were not considered as pets or companions, but rather servants of farmers. Although German Shepherds werent considered household pets, their owners did provide proper food, protection, and shelter.

In the early 1800s, a German cavalry officer named Captain Max Von Stephanitz made it his mission to create the most ideal German herder. He co-founded the worlds first club devoted to German Shepherds. Von spent 35 years promoting and refining the wonderful breed.

Eventually, people started noticing their strength, intelligence, and obedience traits. Hence, military forces have started employing German Shepherds as working dogs. Their intelligence, strength, speed, obedience, agility, and a keen sense of smell made them ideal as working dogs in the military force. The GSDs versatility is what made them capable-working dogs and peoples favorite companion.

Today, GSDs are not only considered as one of the most favorite household pets. Due to the breeds reputation for being loyal, courageous, and easy-to-train, German Shepherds are commonly used as police or military dogs. The versatility and outstanding characteristics are what make German Shepherds a wonderful pet, companion, and protector.

From 1949 until 1990, Germany was divided into the Deutsche Demokratische Republik in the East, and the Federal Republic of Germany in the West. The DDR, being a communist state under influence from the USSR, was kept wholly separate from West Germany. “I love Nadelhaus German Shepherds. They brought us our Phoebe and we couldnt be happier. We are so grateful for our stunningly beautiful and incredibly smart pup. She is amazing and turns heads wherever we go. I recommend Nadelhaus to anyone looking for a quality GSD! They deliver on their word!”

    Corina Bonelli, Concord, CA,

“The most critical element when buying a GSD is temperament. My vet said in his 40 years of working with GSs hes never taken care of one who has such a great disposition. I wouldnt trust any other Breeder. I bought the most gorgeous German Shepherd from Nadelhaus. He just turned nine years old. Dont try another breeder . I actually put money down on a dog but when I went to their location and listened I knew I could only buy from them. BEST part. Hes so smart, I mean it looks like I trained him but he already knows what to do. He is also very gentle to other people and animals. I listened to Traci and she said you start training them when you bring them home. I did and it was so worth it. Ill have to post pics.”

    Description Of The German Shepherd

Regardless of whether it comes from show or working lines, the GSD is 22 to 26 inches tall at the shoulders and weighs between 50 and 95 pounds. There should be noticeable masculinity of males and femininity of females. German shepherd puppies for sale should be outgoing, friendly, and inquisitive. As he becomes older, you will notice your German shepherd will be polite but aloof with strangers and openly hostile against intruders and threats. Show lines, including pet dogs, are generally less intense and do not require as much exercise as working GSDs. The breed standard is similar between the lines, the major difference being on the interpretation of joint angles. American show dogs, for example, have an extreme angulation of the hind legs leading to an exaggerated slope of the topline. A German shepherd is a medium-large powerful dog with tremendous stamina. She has a distinctive head with a slight dome shape to the top skull and large open upright ears. Eyes are medium, almond-shaped, and steady in their gaze. The breed is significantly longer than tall, a build that supports trotting effortlessly over long distances with short explosions of speed. A German shepherds athleticism has ensured its longstanding excellence and versatility in police and military operations, search and rescue, bomb detection, drug-sniffing, criminal apprehension, agility competitions, Schutzhund, herding trials, physical assistance, and guide dog for the blind.

    BUYING A GERMAN SHEPHERD PUPPY?

Some Breeders advertise that they are a member of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria Inc. This DOES NOT mean that the Breeder follows the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia Breed Improvement Schemes and the GSDCV Code of Ethics.

THE GSDCV RECOMMENDS THAT YOU PURCHASE YOUR GERMAN SHEPHERD PUPPY ONLY FROM A BREEDER WHO ADHERES TO THE STRICT GSDCA BREED IMPROVEMENT SCHEMES AND THE GSDCV CODE OF ETHICS. West German Working Line German Shepherd

West German Working Lines come in various colors, but youll find most of them to have strong, rich colors. Many can appear almost entirely black with hints of cappuccino shade closer to the mid-limb region. Black and tan colors are common.

However, this description is expansive enough to cover many working variety GSDs and shouldnt be taken as the sole identifying indicator of West German Working Lines. In addition to being visibly darker, these dogs are also more compact than their show-line counterparts.

Their smaller bodies make them more athletic, which means they demand more stimulation. But if you actually want a dog that can engage your family with high energy, then a Working Line GSD is perfect. This perfection also comes on a budget.

Show Line dogs are usually more expensive than the working variety, and you can expect to purchase a West German Working Line GSD for $1500 to $1800. Some breeders release working line puppies for as little as $700, while others charge over $2000 for a similar dog. Ultimately many business factors like supply, demand, experience, reputation, and cost of doing business need to be factored in.

One might think that with working line dogs, standard best practices like visiting the stud do not apply. Thats not true. You must always ask the breeder to show you the puppys parents, and you must observe the breeding conditions.

How To Care Of Your German Shepherd

7 week old White German Shepherd puppies

It is always exciting to bring a new dog home. When you introduce a German shepherd to your family, you may feel you have joined the cool club. You want to provide your Shepherd with the appropriate care. German Shepherds come from a long line of working dogs and a herding heritage. Your GSD will not do well alone nor will she like not having anything to do all day. You need to provide your dog not only with attention, food, and love but also a meaningful job or activity. Agility, Schutzhund, herding, or interactive games can keep your Shepherds mind active. Be imaginative. Your GSD puppy should eat three or four times a day. An adult German shepherd should eat four to six cups of high-quality dog food daily with an animal protein source in the first five ingredients. Divide feedings to help prevent bloat or GDV. Your Shepherd may need as much as two hours of exercise daily. Best results come from breaking physical activities into two or more sessions a day rather than doing all of them at once. For your young German shepherd puppy, you need to focus on not injuring its growth plates. Never pressure a puppy to keep going beyond the point he has indicated he wants to stop. German shepherd puppies need more time than some other dog breeds on socialization. The GSD is beginning to develop a reputation for unprovoked biting and is receiving bans in alarming numbers because of poor breeding, improper training, neglect of socialization, and handler mistreatment.
