German Shepherd Lab Mix Shedding

The German Shepherd typically has a double coat of medium length. However, some German Shepherds have a long coat that can be wavy or wiry. On the other hand, the Labrador is known for having short, tight hair. Both breeds are infamous shedders, and blow their coats twice a year in spring and fall.

Like both their parents, a German Shepherd mix Lab has a double coat. An ultra-warm undercoat and a coarse outer coat to protect them from the elements as they work outdoors. Your German Shepherd Labrador Retriever mix pups coat will almost certainly be short and neat like their Labrador parents. Provide Adequate Space For Both Dogs

The most efficient manner to assure that a German Shepherd and a Labrador will get along in the same home is to provide both dogs with sufficient space.

With both breeds being large in stature and both being highly energetic, they will need adequate space to get their needed daily allotment of exercise.

Having a large yard for the two breeds to exercise in is crucial. Providing them with a yard will allow them to have their own space and not feel like they are on top of one another.

Labradors And German Shepherds Have Become Needier Study Finds

And humans are probably to blame

Two of the most popular domesticated dog breeds have lost some of their innate canine independence over the years which has subsequently made them needier towards their owners. This is due to artificial breeding by humans wanting to create more affectionate pets.

Italian researchers compared the behaviour of three breeds Labradors, German Shepherds and Czechoslovakian Wolf-dogs to see which one relied on humans the most when it came to a feeding experiment.

Scientists trained 56 dogs to retrieve hidden food from an upturned strainer, in a familiar setting such as their garden or a local park. They then secured the strainer to the ground, making it impossible for the dogs to retrieve the food. Researchers timed the dogs to see how long they waited before seeking help via ‘human-directed gazing’.

High levels of ‘human-directed gazing’, where a dog looks to its owner for reassurance and support, is associated with dependency and neediness.

They found Labradors were most likely to demonstrate this behaviour in the shortest space of time, taking just 4.5 seconds to look for help. Whereas Czechoslovakian Wolf-dogs spent the longest time problem-solving alone , and German Shepherds fell somewhere between the two.

The first thing to say here is that they are large and active dogs and any person that gets a Sheprador needs to have an active lifestyle to meet the high exercise requirements they have. A person thathas an active outdoor lifestyle will be better suited.

Also, as these dogs require lots of mental stimulation, having a large family is a bonus there will be more people to help train and exercise the dog.

Without stimulation, they can get bored and this can lead to chewing and other unwanted behaviors.

One thing to note is that they will have a thick double coat, so if a family member has any sort of dog allergy then the Sheprador isnt the right dog for your family.

Finally, as with any dog, you should teach your children to respect your dogs boundaries and be able to understand certain body language.

So to summarize, providing you meet their needs, Shepradors are great family dogs and will make a loving member of your family.

How To Train Your German Shepherd Lab Mix

But no matter how well trained they are, if they are left to get bored for too long, they can engage in some pretty destructive behavior, such as digging and chewing everything in sight. You have been forewarned.

The highly assertive nature of German Shepherds means they do not respond well to domination training.

They are likely to revolt when subjected to punishment. The best way to train a Labrador German Shepherd Mix is through positive reinforcement.

Labradors are pleasers that love to make their humans happy. This means their offspring are also likely to feel the same way. So they will respond rapidly to training based on rewards for positive behavior.

When training a German Shepherd Lab Mix, focus on socialization, as they may have inherited the German Shepherds tendency to be hostile toward strangers. Deal with this behavior early, with specific training for dealing with children and strangers.

While this dog will probably be great with your kids, as they are very loyal and will bond with them, teach your kids to respect the dogs boundaries and read their behavior.

Similar Size Or Larger

You dont need to necessarily look for a Great Dane to be a companion but your second dog is too small, they may not be able to play as well with your German Shepherd. When they start to get rambunctious, your little dog will be at a major disadvantage. However, shorter dogs like the Pittie can still make a decent compansion thanks to their powerful build.

In addition, German Shepherds have that prey drive we discussed. If you have a very little dog in the same house, its possible that your Shepherd gives chase and might even attack it.

Granted, this isnt exactly likely, but you shouldnt discount the possibility, especially when theyre first meeting.

Still, the best companion breeds for German Shepherds will usually be of a similar size. Since German Shepherds tend to weigh between 50-90 pounds, most of the tougher medium to large-sized dog breeds should be a good fit.
