Led By The Nose: Meet The Uae’s Covid

These 12 dog breeds might be banned from Dubai soon

DUBAI -Police in Dubai have built up a special unit of 38 sniffer dogs that can detect COVID-19 from human sweat samples with 92% accuracy, the supervisor of the training programme told Reuters.

Dubai Police trained the cohort, which includes German Shepherds, Labradors, Cocker Spaniels and Border Collies, to recognise the scent of COVID-19 using samples of sweat from people with confirmed infections, collected by holding a swab in an armpit for a few minutes.

“A very small amount of that is then put into a jar – it has the scent of the patient – then we put the sample out for the dog to sniff … When he gives us a sign, we give him a treat,” said First Lieutenant Nasser al-Falasi of Dubai Police, supervisor of the programme at the K9 training centre in Dubai’s Awir region.

In the centre’s large training hall, police handlers walk the dogs along a row of metal boxes, of which only one contains a positive sample. The dogs sniff the samples and within seconds sit down to signal that they have found something.

Police trainer Fatima al-Jasmi, who is on the COVID-19 detection team, guides an excited-looking black and white Border Collie through the exercises, getting it right every time.

“The training was a bit of a challenge, learning a new skill at an international standard, and then training the dog in that,” she said.

The study used sweat samples and PCR tests from 3,290 people to compare the dogs detection abilities.

Common Reasons For Breed

There are a number of reasons why some countries feel they must ban a specific dog breed.

  • Dog Bite Statistics Report: Breeds that have a history of aggressively biting and/or breeds with the most damaging bites.
  • Tendency Toward Aggression: Breeds that have a tendency to attack people or those that can be a risk to public safety.
  • Used for Illegal Activities: Some excellent breeds are unfortunately used for illegal activities like dogfighting and are, therefore, banned.
  • Rare or Unrecognized Breeds or Wolf Hybrid Dogs: In many countries, cross breeds or mutts are banned because people believe they have unpredictable behavior. If a certain breed is banned, mixing it with a legal breed will also make the mixed dog illegal.
  • Poor History: Dogs that have poor health or behavior records are banned. In specific countries with extreme weather, specific dogs that will not do well in the climate will not be allowed to live there.
  • Why Do Some Countries Ban German Shepherds

Every country has breed-specific legislation to ban specific breeds that are identified as being potentially dangerous in public places or used for illegal activities like dog fighting. German Shepherds are often banned in countries that identify them as “aggressive.” Of course, this is debatable. It makes you wonder whether there are other dog breeds not on the ban list that could be a threat to kids and other pets in public places.

ABU DHABI // The list of banned dogs for import is being expanded this year from seven to 12 by the Ministry of Climate Change, the department assigned to administer animal welfare law and its new amendments.

Those rules will be enforced by municipalities around the UAE.

Banned dogs include all types of pit bull, wolf-dog hybrids, American Staffordshire terriers, Japanese tosa, Brazilian and Argentinian mastiffs and crossbreeds of any of the above six types of dog.

Other breeds added to the banned list this year include the American bully, rottweilers, breed or hybrid, doberman pinschers, perro de presa canario and boxer dogs.

Banned breeds, once registered, cannot be re-homed or adopted if the owner decides to give up the dog. Re-registration with another owner will no longer be possible.

Dogs must be handed over to the municipality only, which will decide on a case-to-case basis what will happen to the dog.

It has been decided to not kill banned breeds if they are not aggressive, with suggestions to transfer them to a non-killing shelter and then re-home them abroad.

If a banned breed is found unattended or without its owner, the dog will be confiscated. This will be considered a case of neglect and the banned breed rules will apply.

Owners will have to ensure their dog is always walked on a leash. Breach of this regulation will lead to confiscation and no option to have the dog returned.
