How Easy Are White Shepherds To Train

White German shepherd gives birth to rare lime green puppy

White Shepherds and white German Shepherds are both exceptionally intelligent. German Shepherd Dogs are rated as the third most intelligent breed of dog, behind Border Collies and Poodles. They are very easy to train if you are consistent in your commands and train regularly each day.

The German Shepherd Dog Club of America has some excellent short articles on training a German Shepherd puppy. Their advice can easily be applied to a White Shepherd puppy. Using consistency and practice in your training works for any dog. Rewarding positive behaviors is always good advice. And so on.

Things that White Shepherd puppies need to learn at home include:

  • House training
  • Bite inhibition
  • Rules of the home/manners
  • Basic obedience including walking on a leash, coming when called, etc.
  • Grooming

These are all important things for a puppy to learn. House training is huge. Soiling in the house is one of the biggest reasons why dogs are dumped at shelters. This is the very most basic thing that a dog needs to learn if he wants to keep his home.

Dont forget to clean your puppys ears or at least check them regularly. Shepherds can have some ear problems occasionally.

The Berger Blanc Suisse Aka The Snowy Shepherd

The Berger Blanc Suisse breed, often called the Snowy Shepherd, possesses all its standard cousins power, strength, and trainability but is slightly different in structure. The steep angulation from the shoulders to the hindquarters that is seen in traditional registered German shepherds is less evident in the BBS. Instead, the line along the back is more even, giving the animals a look of greater strength and stability.

The Berger Blanc Suisse white shepherd also has a gentler, mellower nature than the GS but still retains its protectiveness of the home and family members. Very social and easy to train, these dogs make great family companions but require a considerable amount of exercise to keep them fit and happy.

The breed is not as common as the German shepherd. The white German shepherd was not much favored by the Germans when they bred the German shepherd for the first time. Some people definitely appreciate the white dogs but they still had to fight and got recognition as a different breed altogether. But they are still not that common and as they are kept as pets, the breeding happens at homes and at the breeders in a large number. So, the exact population of the breed is hard to know. Hence, the conservation status of the breed is Not Listed.

History Of White German Shepherd Dogs

German Shepherd Dogs originated from Germany where theyre called Deutsche Schäferhunde. In 1889, Captain Max von Stephanitz created a breed standard for GSDs, which included white varieties in the show ring and whelping box. Many years later, the white variety was extinguished from the original GSD breed standard. We dont know exactly when and who started removing white GSDs from the gene pool, but history points toward the Nazis.

White dog coats are usually caused by a recessive gene.

This carries:

  • Complicated skin issues
  • Other serious health concerns

Basically, a recessive white dog coat is called an albino dog. So it makes perfect sense why ethical breeders would remove this problematic gene from their breeding programs.

White Gsds Produce Another

Why Try Whites (German Shepherd)

White German shepherd puppies arent the only offspring that can be produced.

Contrary to your belief, mating 2 white German shepherds, will definitely result in a standard colored offspring.

In fact, its only when with one white GSD that you can get different breeds such as a cute white German shepherd or a standard colored dog. So, theres no assurance.

Even without any genes of dwarfism, theres an off chance that a white GSD may produce a white miniature German shepherd offspring.

Temperament Of The White German Shepherd

White German Shepherds are loyal to the core, and will even risk their own lives to protect their human owner and family.

They have a well-balanced, cheerful, tranquil and at times serious personality. They also exhibit confidence, courage, faithfulness, and obedience. White GSDs, like all other colors, exude self-confidence and are great guard and herding dogs as well as an excellent family pet.

White GSDs tend to have a well-poised demeanor, but if a situation arises that requires their protective services they will react in an instant.

When they are around strangers, they become observant of the situation and may seem shy even. Dont underestimate them, though.

They are getting a clear picture of the stranger and sensing their intentions. If the stranger or friend means no harm, they will usually drop their guard and begin to warm up.

These dogs are capable of adapting to a variety of social situations and events.

They also have a playful nature and are highly interested in expressing their fun-loving nature by playing with various toys, playing fetch, running, and other activities, as long as it is with their pet owner and family.

Hip & Elbow Dysplasia

German Shepherds are among many breeds prone to elbow and hip dysplasia. Dysplasia happens when the joint is malformed and unstable. These abnormalities can happen in the socket, ball, or both. Either one of these conditions can cause premature osteoarthritis as well as laxity in the joint. About 20% of German Shepherds eventually develop hip and/or elbow dysplasia.

Hip or elbow dysplasia can be moderate to severe and it tends to be an expensive problem to treat. Anti-inflammatories, a special diet, and a heated bed may help a dog with dysplasia. Sometimes surgery is necessary which may involve hip replacement.

Does A White Coat Affect Hearing

Has anyone ever told you that white dogs are more likely to be deaf?

Theres some truth in it. Dogs like Dalmatians, who owe their white coat to the extreme piebald gene, are more likely to have hearing loss.

Thats because the same cells which produce skin and hair pigment also play an important structural role in the inner ear.

Dogs with the piebald or extreme piebald genes lack these cells, so they are white, and they may have hearing loss.

But remember that white GSDs inherit their white coat, by a different, special gene?

That means their coat is white, but their skin is still normally pigmented, and their hearing is unaffected!

Characteristics Of The White German Shepherd

White German Shepherd puppies look like little balls of fluff and are extremely cute! However, they grow very quickly and reach 50% of their adult size normally by around 4 months. The White German Shepherd can weigh anywhere between 50 to 85 pounds with a male weighing more than a female. They are classified as a large dog breed and stand tall at 22 to 26 inches at the shoulder. Again, females are normally shorter than the males.

They are a very muscular and athletic breed, which is no surprise because they were bred for their working capabilities. They are very strong and wear a proud posture and have erect ears. Their feet are big too, even when they are puppies!

The White German Shepherd has two different types of coat short coat and long coat. If your White German Shepherd has a long coat, it will typically be much longer than other German Shepherds in the breed. 2. The father of the German Shepherd breed

In 1895, Max Von Shlephanitz purchased the first Shepherd Dog at a dog show, naming him Horand Von Grafath. Horand was the genetic basis for the German Shepherd breed.
