The Laekenois: A Big Cuddly Cousin

This cousin comes from the Belgian side of the family. The Laekenois is a breed recognized on its own, quite different-looking than other shepherd cousins.

The Laekenois dog breed has a coat that distinguishes him from other dogs. The hair isnt straight; its rather wooly, wiry, and lighter than other breeds. Hes a short haired shepherd with a peculiar hairstyle!

One look at this dogs face, and youll realize why theyre so affectionate and gentle. Still, they dont make good show dogs, but they will make a show every day for their family members.

Do German Shepherd Ears Stand Up Straight

All German Shepherds are born with floppy ears and your puppys ears will go through several weird stages before they become pointy and stand up straight.

You should expect your German Shepherds puppy ears to stand up and remain erect when he is finished teething. In most cases, the teething process lasts until the dog reaches five months of age, but it can last longer for some pups .

During this period, you will probably notice that your Shepherds ears are going through some funny changes. Its quite common for the ears to be up one day, just to drop down again the next.

If this happens, theres no need to be alarmed! In fact, this is a sign that your pups muscles and cartilage are developing properly.

Keep in mind that all puppies are individuals and develop differently. Thus, there is a big chance that your Shepherd puppys ears need seven months to stand up straight.

Generally, if your pups ears have gone up at some point and then dropped down again, they will stand up again and stay that way into adulthood. However, if the dogs ears dont go up by the time he is eight or nine months old, chances are that they never will.

Percentage of Ears Standing Up

According to owners, nearly one in five German Shepherd dogs have floppy ears . However, this doesnt mean that your GSDs ears wont stand up once hes finished teething.

Lets take a look at percentages of German Shepherd ears standing up by age:

Why German Shepherd Panda Have A Black And White Coat

Panda German Shepherd is a purebred GSD with a tan, black and white coat. A panda puppy with this exceptional fur color is mainly born due to a mutation in its genetics. Yes!

The mutation in the K.I.T. genes were reported to be the source of their black and white coat. However, the history of panda dogs is not that old, and they were first reported in 2000.

According to a white spotting test by UCDavis, only a German shepherd dog with N/P genotype can transmit panda coloring to their offspring.

The study concluded that a cross of two GSDs with normal and panda alleles would have the chance to transmit the mutation in 50% of the litter they produced.

Moreover, the fur color of all the panda dogs depends on their genetics or the characteristics of breeds mated to produce them.

You must be thinking about the amount of white color panda German shepherd puppy will have, like, 35%, 50%, or even more.

Well, honestly, you never know. Why?

Because the cause of piebald German shepherds is a mutation or alteration in the gene sequencing.

What it’s Like Owning a German Shepherd

There are a few ways to gauge how much bigger a German Shepherd will get.

First, check your puppy’s age. If your GSD is younger than two years old, they definitely have room to keep growing!

Another way to tell if your pup still has a lot of growing to do is their paw size. Do their paws look large compared to their legs and body? This is a classic adolescent feature of a dog, and means your pup is likely still growing!

If you bought your German Shepherd from a breeder, they should be able to give you a specific, estimated weight based on your puppys parents and past litters. Most of the time, a dog will not grow bigger than its larger parents.

Are Shepadoodles Aggressive

No, Shepadoodles are not often considered an aggressive breed. They are loyal, proud, and strong, but this doesnt mean that they are aggressive. This dog breed is known for its highly energetic personality as well as its devotion and loyalty to its owners.

However, some people mistake loyalty with aggression. If your dog senses that you or your house is in danger, your Shepadoodle might want to take charge and assert themselves to show whos boss.

They might bark or growl, but they wont jump to aggression. You will often be able to keep them under control during this time and command them to stop if you want them to. The good thing about this breed is that theyre very smart, so you can teach them to stop and listen to you before they reach aggression.

Shepadoodles make good guard dogs and watchdogs, provided you train them correctly. They will be alert for danger, but wont become aggressive unless they feel like a threat is imminent.

Dogs who have been neglected during their early life are more likely to have aggressive tendencies than dogs who have been brought up correctly. Dogs who have not been socialized or trained properly might also be more aggressive than others, so keep this in mind.

Are German Shepherds Smart

According to the author of The Intelligence of Dogs,, Stanley Coren, Ph.D., ranks the German Shepherd as the third smartest dog breed. This study took a look at more than 100 dog breeds as they were judged by 200 dog obedience judges while learning new commands. Dogs were ranked based on their ability to perform commands 95% of the time or better based on less than five command repetitions.

The incredible level of intelligence in the German Shepherd, a level only bested by the Border Collie and the Poodle, makes this breed incredibly versatile. An ability to quickly pick up new commands and an intense desire to please its master means that this breed is the perfect candidate for any number of professional positions available to canines. This trait is perhaps why this is the breed of choice for both military and police work worldwide.

When theyre serving professionally, the German Shepherd can take part in police work, guard dog work, sheepdog work, service dog work, military work, and search and rescue work. German Shepherds also frequently participate in dog sports, including obedience, tracking, flyball, ring sport, and agility.

How Smart Are Shepadoodles

Looks like my friends dog

The Shepadoodle is a mixed breed between two highly intelligent dog breeds the German Shepherd and Standard Poodle. The offspring will take genetics from both of their parents, meaning that they will inherit a lot of this intelligence.

On the whole, Shepadoodles are very bright dogs and can easily be trained within record timing. You can train them to be watchdogs or guard dogs, as well as when and where to bark and how to herd animals.

Shepadoodles are excellent dogs for a number of jobs that you might want them to help you with. You can also train out bad behaviors easily with this dog breed, making them a good option for beginners or older people.

Again, this does differ between each Shepadoodle theyre not all going to be the same level of brightness. Some will be much smarter than others, so youre not always guaranteed to get a smart dog when choosing a Shepadoodle.

This is especially true if youre purchasing a Shepadoodle puppy, as there is no way to know how smart the dog will be when it grows up. However, as a rule of thumb, Shepadoodles are considered very intelligent thanks to their lineage.

The Beginnings Of Standardisation

Stephanitz purchased property near Grafrath in the 1890s where he began experimenting with dog breeding. He used many of the techniques utilised by English dog breeders of the period. He was primarily interested in improving the German shepherding dogs because they were local and were the working dogs of his time. Stephanitz enjoyed attending dog shows and observed that there were many different types of shepherding dogs in use in Germany but there was no breed standardisation. He greatly admired those dogs with a wolf-like appearance and prick ears who also were intelligent, had sharp senses and willingness to work and believed that he could create a better working dog that could then be used throughout Germany.

He purchased his first dog Hektor Linksrhein in 1899 and changed his name to Horand von Grafrath. Horand was used as the primary breeding stud by Stephanitz and other breeders and is the foundation of the German Shepherd breed as we know it. Stephanitz used the knowledge he had acquired during his years at the Veterinary College and “…established a grand design he wanted breeders to aim for with judging based on angle of bones, proportions and overall measurements.” Horand’s son Hektor v. Schwaben and his grandsons Heinz v. Starkenburg, Beowolf and Pilot were also instrumental in standardizing the breed. Dogs from other areas of Germany such as Franconia, Württemberg and Thuringia were also used as breeders.

Mini Shepadoodle / Miniature Shepadoodle

A miniature or mini Shepadoodle is a medium sized German Shepherd and Poodle mix that typically ranges from 35 pounds to 45 pounds.; The name sounds a little bit off since these are supposed to be mini dogs, but for the Shepadoodle breed this is actually quite mini.; Consider that German Shepherds can reach over 100 pounds and a Poodle can reach to be around 90 pounds, this is considered a mini Shepadoodle.

A Great Addition To The Family

Black German Shepherds may look aggressive, but they are very loving and friendly. These loyal hounds are great family dogs and will fit in with different types of household.

They are known to be funny, which is a trait that helps them get along with children or teenagers. The Black Shepherd can also have a soft spot for cats or other pets when provided with socialization training during their puppyhood.

However, these dogs are aloof, and because of their watchdog nature, they will be wary of people they dont know.

How To Tape My German Shepherds Ears

What a GSD should look like

As mentioned above, its very important that you dont start taping your dogs ears too early! Give your dog time to develop and let him finish teething before you attempt to correct his ears in any way.

When it comes to taping there are two methods you can try:

Wrap

For this method, youll need foam hair rollers, thin white surgical tape, and a Popsicle stick. Dont use any duct tape or other similar products and remove the plastic part from the hair roller and use just foam.

Place the foam roller inside your dogs ear and wrap the ear around it making sure that everything is in a vertical position. Next, use the thin surgical tape to wrap the ear around the foam roller starting from the tip and working your way to the base.

Repeat the same for the other ear, and once both ears are taped use the popsicle stick and attach it horizontally across the top of both ear tips.

Keep the ears taped for a week and then remove the wrap to see if the ears are standing up. If the ears are erect you dont have to wrap them again.

But if they arent, give your dog a break for one day and tape the ears again. Continue wrapping the ears until they are standing up.

Your pooch will probably find it strange to have his ears wrapped and will most likely tear the tape several times. When this happens, just re-apply everything again and your dog will eventually get used to having his ears wrapped.

Black & Cream German Shepherd

Another beautiful standard color of the GSD, the black and cream German Shepherd is another popular choice among owners around the world.

Theyre very similar in appearance to the black and silver, but with a different shade of white. But if you look close enough, theyre quite different.

Instead of the metallic-like silver coloring, the black and cream has an off-white cream color. This cream color can vary from dog to dog, but usually has a hint of yellow to it.

Like the black and silver, this colored German Shepherd will have a bottom thats primarily cream and a top thats primarily black.

Again, the black can come in different hues and its not uncommon to see different shades of black on this dog.

Common Health Problems In German Shepherds

German Shepherds are great dogs for the right owners, but they are at risk of certain conditions and illnesses common with the breed. Making sure the parents of your puppy have had the relevant health screening can reduce the chances of your puppy being affected by some of these upsetting conditions.

German Shepherds are in a group of breeds classed as Category Three by The Kennel Club, which is the highest category of the health concerns due to their conformation. This means that these types of dog have been bred over many years to look a certain way, but that these changes to the way they look have started to cause them health problems. For German Shepherds, this is mostly due to the shape of their back legs and hips.

Some of the conditions German Shepherds may develop include:

This list is not exhaustive, and there are many other conditions that German Shepherds have been shown to be prone to.
