How These Five Types Came To Be

Working Line German Shepherd Puppies – Shield K9

In Germany in 1961, they split the country into East and West by building the Berlin Wall. This is what initially led to the German Shepherd taking on different breeding structures between the two sides. The separation lasted until 1989.

The introduction of the German Shepherd to the United States dates back to 1906. Because of unregulated breeding, the U.S. has a problem with authenticity. Many original bloodlines are now broken, causing undesirable traits in the breed.

Czechoslovakia had their hand in things as well, developing their unique spin on the breed. Throughout 1955, the dogs were workers but didnt thrive as a breed until Germanys official reuniting.

Europe and American lines have differences relating to breed standards. While Europe has a focal point of the breeds temperament and ability, America is more focused on physical traits.

What Kind Should I Choose

The next question always seems to be, Which type of working line should I choose?

The answer is You shouldn’t.

Choose your breeder first, then let your breeder guide you to your puppy!

Except for high-level competitors or preservation breeders, most people don’t know enough about individual bloodlines, pedigrees, and working line German Shepherds’ subsets to make a well-informed choice. While each type of working line German Shepherd may have common traits, each individual puppy and dog is different and should be judged as such and not thrown into a specific category of traits due to his or her breed type. You may think the West German traits sound best for you, and your breeder may have the perfect Czech shepherd pup waiting for you!

Learning about the history and origin of the various working line shepherds is fascinating, but your best bet is to speak with a breeder and let them guide you to a puppy that is the right fit for your home and needs- regardless of its specific subset of bloodlines!

East German Ddr Working Line German Shepherds

East German DDR Working lines share many common characteristics with the West German lines. They share much of the same history as well. They were bred and tailored particularly for their extremely heightened desire to work, along with their quick ability to guard.

Because of their prey drive instinct, monitoring them around other animals and small children can help to avoid primal triggers. That doesnt mean that every dog in the line is as prey-driven. Some are incredibly docile and sweet, never hurting a fly. However, because of their working roots, it is something to watch for as a responsible owner.

They have incredible focus and endurance, suiting them perfectly for physically and mentally stimulating roles. Like their West brothers and sisters, East German DDRs have sable coloring, though most are darker and sometimes even black.

What Type Of Dog Do You Need

If you are considering getting a German Shepherd, its important to consider what you want to get the dog for. There are many differences between the East and West genetic lines.

If youre hoping to get a hard-working dog to act as a professional guard dog, you may want to invest in an East German Shepherd. If you want a family dog or are interested in competing in shows, a West German Shepherd might be more what you are looking for. But overall we are talking about averages, you’ll find excellent dogs in most breed types if you know what to look for.

These dogs need work and play, so make sure you are up to it. They are friendly with people and with other animals, are naturally loyal, and protective. These dogs will want to play and they will be very driven to fall your directives and do what they are told.

Is A Ddr/czech Or West German Working Line Dog Right For You

The joy of owning a working line bred German Shepherd is immeasurable but a companion and workmate that gives itself over to you so completely requires a significant reciprocal commitment. If youre considering a Vom Banach K9, a DDR/Czech or West German working dog, or any other working line breed, we ask that you consider these questions as part of your deliberation.

  • Do you have a fenced yard?
  • Are you able to devote at least 30 minutes per day to exercising your dog?
  • Will your puppy be raised inside of your home as a part of your family?
  • Do you have small children, infants or other animals in your home currently and if not do you plan to in the future?
  • Do you plan to crate train your puppy in addition to housebreaking?
  • Are you prepared to feed a high quality food to your dog such as a grain-free or holistic food as a regular diet throughout its lifetime?
  • Do you know the difference between the temperaments and character of a Working Line German Shepherd Dog over a show line or an American bred German Shepherd?
  • Have you already consulted with a private trainer or know of obedience classes that are offered in your area that may be more specific to working dogs over an average Pet Store style all breed pet training class?
  • Do you understand the commitment required to adequately socialize your puppy so that he/she will grow up to be a well mannered well trained dog?
  • Do you plan to spay or neuter your puppy when he or she is old enough?

Working Line Vs Show Line German Shepherd

Show line German Shepherds have a sloping back, with back legs that are shorter than the front legs.

This structural form is the opposite of the working line German Shepherd, which has a straight back. As mentioned earlier, the work line GSD also has longer back legs than front legs.

Work line GSDs have sturdier torsos with much more muscularity than their show line counterparts. Work line German Shepherds are also more aggressive than show line dogs.

While both breeds can be aggressive and prey-driven, the work lines characteristics are more suitable for training to work in high-risk occupations.

Where the coats of show line animals must meet specific standards, the work line German Shepherds coat must have a medium thickness.

This double-coat must be of a medium thickness to ensure that the animal can tolerate diverse environments when working.

Work line German Shepherds are also explicitly bred to have specific characteristics that make them suitable as work animals.

For example, they must be aggressive, have an exceptionally well-developed prey drive, and be easily trainable.

These dogs work under arduous conditions at times, so they must be responsive to commands. They are also highly loyal, are one-person dogs in the workplace, and are super-intelligent.

All these characteristics ensure that the work line German Shepherd is preferable for training to work in various environments.

In contrast, breeders focus on breeding the show line German Shepherd for events.

About The Different Lines Of German Shepherd Dogs

THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG – Working line or Show?

When you study a dog’s pedigree both vertically and horizontally, it tells you of the dog’s genetic potential and the possibilities of what it could be. When you watch a dog working or performing in an event or competition, it shows you its capabilities and what the dog looks and appears to be. However, when you look at that same dog’s offspring and producing record together with how it’s progeny look, work and perform, it is only then will you know what the dog really is, and what it has to offer and contribute to the breed. – French’s German Shepherds

There are often differences in understandings, terminologies and definitions of what a “Working Dog” is, especially with German Shepherds. Some would define dogs only involved in IGP as “Working Dogs.” Others would use the term, “Working Dogs” to differentiate between “IGP Lines and “Show Lines,” especially “American Show Line” dogs that are bred according to “Breed Standards” to compete in Conformation Shows.

Wikipedia defines a “Working Dog” as a “canine working animal, i.e., a type of dog that is not merely a pet but learns and performs tasks to assist and/or entertain its human companions.” Many Show Line German Shepherds have Show and Performance Titles in Conformation, Herding and Farm Activities, Obedience,Scent Activities as Tracking,Agility, and for use asService, Therapy and Emotional Support. How Much Exercise Does A Working Line German Shepherd Need

A working line German Shepherd needs 90 to 120 minutes of intense exercise every day. However, you should conduct not all of a GSDs exercise in a single session you should split exercise sessions to 2 or 3 times per day depending on the activity. This is far better both physically and mentally. 2

    Are They Good Pets

If you want to go for a working line German Shepherd as a pet, prepare yourself to keep it active.

If not, youll probably end up replacing furniture regularly, getting landscaping services every other month, and spending your savings on these replacements.

However, if you train your working line German Shepherd, youll have an excellent guard dog that is willing to sacrifice its life for you and your family.

Ensure you stimulate this animal with frequent exercise and games to challenge its intelligence.

Take it on long family hikes, runs, or cycling, as it must have a constructive outlet for its intelligence and energy.

If you wish to purchase a working line German Shepherd, ensure you buy one from a breeder who deals in raising these dogs as pets.

Youll want to ensure that the animal comes from a heritage with an even temperament that makes it suitable as a family pet.

East German Working Line German Shepherds

East German Shepherd dogs, also known as Deutsches Demokratische Republik , have experienced a growth in popularity over the last few decades. While their popularity was high after the World Wars before subsiding with time, they have since carved out a name for themselves in recent times for their capacity to learn, work and provide companionship. DDRs trace their origin from the guard dogs lines initially bred in East Germany after the Second World War, and they are known mainly for their police work. Their name originates from Germany’s official name during the period, Deutsche Demokratische Republik, translating to the Federal Republic of Germany.

The East Germany Communist Party set up a strict breeding program for German shepherd dogs utilized in the military during the cold war era. DDR German shepherds emerged from these breeding programs, gaining popularity for their high work drive and working ability. The East German shepherd breeding program was established to keep pace with the shift in the security demands of East Germany. Within the territory, the government faced an increasing need to deal with attempted defectors from the military, and the country saw the benefits availed by superior dogs in dealing with their security issue, breeding dogs that excelled in police and military work.
