Old Fashioned Straight Back German Shepherd

What Are Old Fashioned German Shepherds

Royalair German Shepherds “Large old-fashioned German S,hepherds”

“Old Fashioned German Shepherd Puppies for Sale.” What does that mean? What is an “Old Fashioned” German Shepherd Dog, and what differentiates them from regular German Shepherds?

Typically, when you see those ads or people who post a photo of their “Old Fashioned” German Shepherd, you see a very large dog with a plush or long coat. They’re also advertised to have “Straight Backs” and not the sloping back that is “the cause of hip dysplasia.” They’re also noted to not have as much drive as modern dogs who are hard to handle because they require consistent training. But are these what “Old Fashioned” German Shepherd Dogs actually looked like and what they were?

If you want a German Shepherd Dog with no drive, you don’t want a German Shepherd Dog. You want a dog who looks like a German Shepherd Dog but behaves like a stuffed animal or lawn ornament. The erect ears aren’t what make German Shepherds who they are, it’s the drive that does. If you step up to the challenge and harness that drive, you will have a dog that will do anything for you. Finding mines and IEDs, running communications wire across No Man’s Land in the trenches in WW1, fighting bad guys in the dark in crawl spaces, etc. How many dogs besides a well-bred German Shepherd will do that for you? Forget dogs, how many people would do that for you? Real Old Fashioned German Shepherds had drive and a lot of it.

Which Breed Is Right For You

We highly recommend choosing a German Shepherd with a straight-back, especially if youre looking for a companion animal. Those with straight backs are less prone to health problems and have higher endurance. They fit closer to what the German Shepherd originally was intended to be. They make much better working dogs as well since they have higher endurance and are bred for more practical purposes.

Those with sloped-backs have few benefits over the straight-backed GSD. For the most part, these dogs are only around in the show-ring, where they have been known to win some competitions. However, this has led to lots of controversies, as their backs likely led to excess health problems and are not in line with the original breed.

In fact, the breed standard specifically speaks against sloped-back dogs, so it is odd that they are winning competitions at all.

Many kennel clubs are starting to stand against these sloped-back dogs, especially after the extensive media coverage that some of them have gotten. For this reason, we highly recommend sticking with straight-backed dogs on all occasions. In fact, we particularly recommend finding a breeder that produces working dogs, as these will have more practical traits and temperaments.

How do I feed my German Shepherd healthy?

Old German shepherds dogbreed, like German shepherds, tend to have joint problems. These are usually hereditary and are also exacerbated by excessive stress and poor nutrition in the growth phase. Avoid eating too high in energy and fat in the first few months. As a rule, your breeder will give you an exact feeding recommendation that you should stick to. We recommend special puppy food that is optimally tailored to the needs of your young old shepherd dog. You should also keep these needs in mind when feeding your adult dog. Healthy food, therefore, takes into account the size, weight, age, state of health, and level of activity of the respective dog.

Regardless of whether you prepare your pets food yourself or use conventional dry or wet food, you should make sure that the feed contains as much as possible of high-quality meat and supplemented with vegetables, fruit, rice or pasta and enriched with valuable fats. A high proportion of grain, however, should be avoided due to the increased risk of allergies.

Long Haired Straight Back German Shepherd

Old German Shepherds, also known as Long Haired Straight Back German Shepherds are what their name suggests. They have long hair which gives them a unique look but rather made them unacceptable for a long time. Despite the long hair, their straight backs and sturdy appearance make them ideal for working and as a pet.

Why Do German Shepherds Backs Slope

GSD has evolved through the years which has resulted in many different bloodlines. From the original working line came the show line barely a few decades after the introduction of GSDs to the world.

Unfortunately, some influential breeders concentrated on the physical perfection of the GSDs. Their idea of a perfect GSD is a sloped back with bouncy movements and looked like floating in show rings. This resulted in sloping back and angulated hind legs.

According to some breeders and some GSD clubs, having sloped backs and angulated hind legs will give GSDs more force in their gait, allowing them to function better than straight backs. But some breeders went from sloped to extremely sloped backs which is way beyond the conformity of the show lines.

Old German Shepherd And The New German Shepherd

Why is the Old German Shepherd breed distinguished from the German Shepherd when it is actually only the long-haired variant of the German Shepherd? In order to understand this question, it is worth taking a look at the origins of the German Shepherd, whose ancestors already lived in Germany in the 7th century. The main task of these reliable and resilient dogs, which were long-haired, was originally to look after flocks of sheep. Due to their self-confident and alert nature, the intelligent old german shepherd makes to themselves a name as the best guard to the sheep and flocks and best friend to the families.

In 1871 Stephanitz started breeding working dogs. His primary goal was to breed an indispensable service dog for the military, which should be characterized by courage, loyalty, obedience, perseverance, and robustness, The Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde eV , which was founded in 1899 and is still responsible for the breed standard of the German Shepherd Dog, initially accepted all colors and hair variants, from rough-haired to straight and long-haired to long-haired Type.

These different breeding objectives created a division within the German Shepherd dog breed. This majestic breed has undergone a series of transformations.

To find out the differences between straight back and sloped back German Shepherds, we need to look at German Shepherds breeding dynamics.

So, to find out which one is the best option for you to go, lets have a look at the old-fashioned German Shepherd.

Where Can I Get A Straight Back German Shepherd Puppy

If youd like to opt for the old school German Shepherd back with your next puppy, then a reputable breeder is your best bet.

Although in many regions the sloped back is widespread, it shouldnt be too hard to find breeders that want to stay true to the original dog breed.

If youre asking any potential breeder these recommend breeder questions, most irresponsible breeders will be eliminated anyway.

For American buyers, it might be harder since the trend in AKC show lines strongly leans towards the sloping back.

German working lines are not free from that problem though.

Time and time again, I witness responsible breeders that turn their back on the German Shepherd breed due to the community that steers it in the wrong direction.

Even if youre not looking for a true working dog, theyve been bred that way for a reason. Performing a job.

A healthy and active furry companion will have a far higher quality of life when compared with the one thats been bred to garner champion titles.

That being said, I find the sentiment that the sloped back looks superior questionable. In my personal opinion, a weird stance and gait are not at all desirable.
