Pet Line German Shepherd Dogs:

How to breed a German Shepherd

Another type of German Shepherd is the everyday pet line dog. Most of the times these dogs come from either unregulated backyard type breeding or fallout from the working and show line dogs.

My Love My Pet would recommend to look at the dogs from a good solid working line or show line dogs that didnt make the cut rather than to looking to a dog that was bred by a backyard breeder.

When breeders find a puppy thats not cut out for thespecific purpose they still have all the good genetics that they were bred forbut they dont have the basic skills or ability to cut it in either the show lineor in the working line, breeders will often sell these puppies off to a pethome then theyll often ask the owners not to breed this dog because its not aproper continuation of the breed.

Effects Of Breeding Older Than Recommended Gsd

Male GSD should not be bred after 10 years as the quality of sperm starts deteriorating. After 8 years, you might want to check with the vet and test the same.

Female GSDs should not be bred after 8 years. As with aging, the quality of eggs would deteriorate. It would be harder for her to keep up with the full term of pregnancy.

She should also not be bred continuously without breaking for a season. This may have negative effects on both her and the litter.

What Is A Responsible Breeder

  • Responsible breeders believe that each new litter they breed should be an improvement on the parents and the breedResponsible breeders give careful consideration to health issues, temperament and the appearance of the dogResponsible breeders plan ahead of each mating to ensure that each puppy produced will be bred in the best possible environmentResponsible breeders accept responsibility for a puppy which they have bred, and make themselves available to give advice, help and information to new owners

The GSDCV have produced an education pamphlet that details much of what you need to consider in breeding with your animal.

History Of German Shepherd Breeding

The German Shepherd dog, or Deutscher Schäferhund, comes from a line of German herding dogs.

In the late 1800s, Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, began searching for a working dog breed with all the essential qualities of this class.

In 1899, he attended a dog show where he bought a Thuringian Shepherd dog, Verein für Deutsche, and named it Horand von Grafrath.

Horand was the first dog that von Stephanitz registered in his new breed club The Society of German Shepherds.

Horand was crossed with other breeds of working dogsfrom Württemberg and Franconia, fathering many puppies, including Hektor von Schwaben, who then sired Beowulf.

Beowulf went on to father more than 80 puppies. The early German Shepherds descended from Horands original line.

The wolf-like appearance of the German Shepherdhas led many to argue that wolf crosses were also bred into this early gene pool.

However, recent genetic testing has confirmed that German Shepherds do not have wolf DNA.

For the next 35 years, von Stephanitz strived to refine the breed standard of the German Shepherd and promote it as a fine specimen of working dogs.

The sought-after qualities of this breed, such as its intelligence, strength, speed, stealth, agility, loyalty, and beauty, were molded during this time.

In the early 1900s, the breeds popularityrose in the United States, and it became a sought-after family dog.

What To Expect During Your Pets Reproductive Cycle

Dolly

Your female German Shepherd will go through four phases during her heat cycle, each with its symptoms.

  • Proestrus lasts for approximately nine days of the reproductive cycle and is apparent when male dogs display an interest in females. However, during proestrus, the female German Shepherd has no interest in her male suitors. Despite starting to bleed lightly, the female cannot fall pregnant at this stage, which is why she has no interest in mating.
  • Estrus follows proestrus and lasts between four and 21 days. This stage is known as flagging, and your pet shows interest at this time because she can fall pregnant as her ovaries release mature eggs. The color of her bleeding becomes lighter, and your pet may rub her rear end against furniture and other items to indicate she is ready to mate.
  • Metestrus endures for about nine days and is when your pet may or may not be pregnant. There are few symptoms at this stage to indicate whether she is in a heat cycle or is pregnant other than her belly looking a little distended. If your female German Shepherd has not fallen pregnant by now, she will move into the last phase of her reproductive cycle.
  • Anestrus is the long period between bleeding and typically lasts for approximately six months. Although this part of your pets life is not strictly part of the reproductive cycle, it must happen before your pet goes into heat again.

Overview Of The Basenji

The Basenji comes from East Africa and is among the three oldest known breeds of dog. 95-97% of races have their origin in wolves, but that of the Basenji is not clear. Genetically, there is not as much correspondence with Canis lupus familiaris, the domestic dog that we know now. That is why it is believed that it is even older than the wolf.

Basenjis are African dog breeds that are historically used for hunting. They are similar to the Ekuke dog or Bingo The Dog, a local dog breed found in Nigeria. Their hunting characteristics arent what distinguishes this kind of dog from the rest.

In many towns and cities, some dogs bark insistently and are a nightmare for the neighbors. There are breeds, like the German Shepherd, that for any little detail they cry into the sky.

Many neighbors tormented by the barking of dogs believe that the perfect dog does not bark or annoy. And that is why a breed that never barks, as is popularly said, has become famous. It is the Basenji breed, a small-medium-sized dog.

So, what is truly meant when they say the Basenji is a dog that never barks? And is it truly the case or not? There are many nuances here, but it is true that in terms of the anatomy of the phonation area, it has different peculiarities from the rest of the breeds.

This implies that the sound that comes out of the breeds mouth is different from the typical sound of dogs when they bark.

The Best Age Of Breeding

A breeder must first grasp how it can achieve healthy pregnancies and its impact on their aims before proceeding because premature breeding of German shepherd puppies can have devastating consequences to both the mother and the pups.

However, the worst-case may go to a premature female German shepherd as younger mothers pose a greater risk to their puppies than older mothers. When a young mother is pregnant with pups, there is a greater risk of stillbirths and miscarriages because she is still developing. If the German shepherds mother dies during the whelping process, the puppys life could be in danger because her pelvis isnt fully developed. Read how long is a German shepherd pregnant.

History Of The White German Shepherd

White German Shepherds are originally from European farms where they were valued for their obedience and loyalty as herding dogs. The white-coated dogs blended in with the sheep, making it easier for farmers to spot wolfs and coyotes.

White German Shepherds are direct descendants of Max Von Stephanitzs German Shepherd. White fur has been considered a fault since the 1930s and is still not recognized or accepted as a type of German Shepherd.

Since White German Shepherds pups only occur if both parents carry a recessive white gene, this magnificent breed is extremely rare. What is even rarer is a White German Shepherd with a long coat.

A common concern that many people have is how do German shepherds get along with other dogs, especially if yours is an only dog. This article will help answer this question so you can better understand the qualities of a good family dog and whether or not a German shepherd would be a good choice for you.

Many dogs do well being solitary animals, but some do much better when they have another furry friend around. If you have ever had more than one pet at home, then do german shepherds get along with other dogs shouldnt be a question for you. Dogs are pack animals by nature, and as such they enjoy the company of their own kind.

This is especially true for German shepherds, which are a particularly social breed. They thrive on companionship and will do best if they have another dog in the home to play with. Not only will this keep them happy and healthy, but it can also help reduce any destructive behaviors that may occur when they are left alone for too long.

Of course, not every dog is compatible with every other, so it is important to do your research ahead of time and make sure that a German shepherd would be a good fit for your current pet situation. If you already have a dog and are considering adding a German shepherd, do german shepherds get along with other dogs is a very important question to find the answer too.

When To Breed Germans Shepherd Dogs

Knowing exactly when to breed is crucial. The average heat cycle in a dog is about 3 weeks long, but there are many individual variances

A heat cycle in general takes place on average every 6 to 7 months. As mentioned, a German shepherd female dog should not be bred at least until 2 years old.

During the first part of the heat cycle , the female dog may urine mark more and there will be visible swelling and a pinkish discharge.

Male dogs may start being interested, although females will be reluctant to allow them to mount. This part of the heat cycle usually lasts for around a week.

The second part of the heat cycle lasts on average 7 days. The discharge at this point will typically change from pink to a straw color. This is the fertile stage of the heat cycle when the female is more willing. She may flirt and play and then will lift the tail out of the way and will eventually allow the stud to mount.

Allowing the dogs to mate every other day may be optimal during this stage until the female no longer stands for him.

Due to female dogs being less inhibited by new environments, they are typically taken to the chosen stud. Sometimes, breedings will require assistance to help the dogs attain a tie and then stay calm afterwards.
