How To Wash Your German Shepherd

CLEAN HOUSE WITH A GERMAN SHEPHERD

Washing your German shepherd could be a very tricky task or it could be a piece of cake! It all depends on the temperament and personality of your pup.

When you begin to wash your dog, use warm water. Do not use hot water even if you like to shower with hot water.

You should begin by thoroughly soaking your dog. Begin to lather up with some dog-safe shampoo. You are going to want to build the shampoo into a rich, thick lather that is sudsy.

Work your fingers as deeply as you can into the fur, trying to reach the skin. Once all the shampoo is foaming, and you have done your best to scrub every inch of your German shepherds body, go ahead and give them a rinse.

After all the soap is out of their fur, you can either dry them off or continue their bath. Lastly, if you use a flea and tick treatment that washes off in the water, you should make sure that you reapply that treatment to your dog to keep them safe from all types of nasty parasites and critters.

What Will Be The Dimensions For The Large Dog House

  • The dimensions are measured in a principle where you add plus inches to the dogs length in width, height, and depth.
  • There are a lot of formulas for measuring the dogs, but the most suitable dimensions are based on the dimensions of your pet. All of the formulas are similar, but provide different sizes of dwelling.
  • If you plan to build one, then this will be a little bit tough for you since you need to be precise
  • The dwellings for extra-large breeds are quite difficult to find, but we reviewed several in the reviews below that are suitable for your GSD.
  • The large dogs need the biggest dwellings.

Finally, the most used formula for choosing a house is:

  • the length of the dog + 12 inches in depth,
  • the length + 18 inches in width
  • the length + 3 inches in the low side and 9 inches in the high side in height.

If we use this formula, it will be very difficult to choose the right booth.

It is better to use the formula developed by the Ontario Humane Society.

According to this formula, so to calculate:

  • the floor space, simply multiply the dogs height by 36 inches
  • the height add two inches to the size of the GSD in a sitting position

German Shepherd Behaviour And Temperament

German Shepherds can be a little shy with strangers on first meeting. However, once they get to know you they can be sweet and goofy. They are as loyal as can be to their family, and their protective nature makes them great guard dogs.

Female German Shepherds are a little more patient with rough play than males. As such, you might consider a female if you have small kids. Regardless, these dogs need proper socialisation and training from a young age. Doing so will make your German Shepherd a lot more easy-going when meeting new people and dogs.

These dogs need to use their brains to be happy – whether in learning, playing or performing tasks. As such, this isnt the right breed for you if you arent home much. Leaving a German Shepherd home alone for long periods of time will lead to problem behaviours, such as chewing and barking.

Massage For Stress And Shedding Reduction

  • Sit next to your dog on the floor in a quiet, comfortable room.
  • Using very light hands, stroke your dog softly from head to tail for 15 minutes.
  • Do this every week.
  • Not only is this relaxing for your dog, but petting a dog is shown to decrease your blood pressure and increases bonding.
  • Its also a great time to notice any health concerns in their body, like lumps or bumps, sore areas, or unusual smells.

Use these double-duty grooming gloves for extra hair removal. The innovative design features the perfect combination of rubber nodules on the fingers and palm, which feels like a massage, and helps to promote bonding.

But

Theres even more to these practical grooming gloves!

They work specifically as a heavy-duty de-shedder to capture hard to reach hair. And, the hair wont stick to the gloves whether used wet or dry.

Plus, its a useful tool to have since it is so gentle even puppies enjoy being brushed!

While this seems like a simple shedding solution, proving a massage with the right type of grooming tool reduces stress in your German Shepherd and goes a long way to keep them healthy.

How To Prevent Destructive Chewing

Dogs are perfectly capable of learning not to chew your stuff you just have to put in a little effort first, that’s all. Destructive chewing can be prevented.

1. Take control of destructive chewing: manage your own possessions. Your first step should be to dog-proof your home. Even if you have the best-behaved dog in the world, there’s still no reason to test her self-control after all, dogs explore the world with their mouths.

Dog-proofing your home means taking whatever you don’t want to end up in her mouth, and making it unavailable. Consider her size and agility when deciding whether something’s out of reach: can she jump? Can she climb, or leap onto something else to reach the desired object? How tall is she when standing on her back legs?

Common targets for destructive chewing in the home include books, eye wear, clothing, shoes, garbage, and small crunchy appliances like cameras, cell phones, and remote controls.

It should go without saying that all food needs to be put securely away: don’t leave snacks on low tables .

You’ll be surprised how acrobatic your dog can be when there’s food at stake!), put all food into containers or the pantry. Rinse your dirty plates clean of any food scraps before leaving them by the sink.

4. Provide her with lots of tasty alternatives to your stuff to avoid destructive chewing in the first place.

Remember, most dogs need to chew if she’s an adolescent or a puppy , her needs will be even more pronounced.

The Three Main Reasons Why Dogs Chew:

Most dogs have a natural desire to chew. It’s fun, it passes the time, and it’s a self-rewarding, self-reinforcing activity

– Chewing provides a nervous, bored, or lonely dog with an outlet for her emotions. To an anxious dog, the repetitive act of chewing is soothing it’s the doggie equivalent of comfort food.

Under exercised dogs often use chewing as a way of burning up nervous energy and giving themselves something to do.

Don’t Miss: When Should I Start Training My German Shepherd Puppy

    Make The Dog Comfortable

You want to make this whole thing as easy for the dog as possible, so you should go through a pre-brushing routine before you start. Dogs understand this kind of thing, as they are naturally creatures of habit.

You should start by commanding them to sit, and then giving them praise and/or a reward for complying.

Then, make them stay in that position for at least ten seconds before praising/rewarding them again. A sitting position works well for brushing time, so you can start by getting them used to that.

After this, you can start petting the dog and handling their teeth and gums. If this seems disgusting, remember that their mouths are actually cleaner than ours .

Either way, you are trying to get them acclimated to the feeling of someone handling their teeth and gums, something that they otherwise might not tolerate.

Most experts say that its good to avoid standing over your dog when they are in this position. It can be a little intimidating, so you should get down on one knee. This will put you at their level and allow them to look you directly in the eye.

You should also avoid holding the dog forcefully in place, as this may frighten them and induce them to try and run.

If anything, you might simply place a reassuring hand on the dogs lower back without applying any real pressure. Most of the time, that is enough to keep the dog from bolting or squirming.

Why Is A Dogs Sense Of Smell So Strong

If you have a dog, you know that his sense of smell is way more sensitive than yours. Typically, a dog will have more than 220 million olfactory receptors in his nose. Some dogs have even more, depending on the breed.

Additionally, the area of a dogs brains that analyzes smells is about 40 times bigger than that in a human being.

Just like humans, dogs have pairs of nostrils that are used to inhale air, including odors. They also have a nasal cavity, which includes Ethmoturbinate bones that are covered with a layer of specialized olfactory epithelium.

The dog has a sub-ethmoidal shelf, a bony structure that is located under the ethmoturbinate bones within the nasal cavity. This will force the air that the dog inhales into the olfactory epithelium. The odor molecules within this air will be absorbed into a mucous layer. Then, these molecules will diffuse towards the receptor neurons, specifically their cilia.

From here, nerve impulses will be generated and then transmitted to the brain of the dog via the olfactory nerves.

This epithelium has many olfactory nerves connected with a very developed region of the dogs brain, the olfactory lobe. There are also olfactory receptors in the vomeronasal organ , which includes elongated, fluid-filled sacs that will open into the dogs nose or mouth.

    Training To Take The Plunge

The best way to bathe your dog is to start them young. Let them get used to the warm water. The water level should not be more than elbow high for them.

Work from their bottom and move forward, saving their head for last. They are very sensitive to having their faces handled.

When scrubbing them, use circular motions with your fingers to get through the undercoat. You can also use long strokes in a massage-like way. These two methods can calm them down. Who does not like a massage?

Make sure you rinse often and repeatedly to make sure that all of the soap has been cleaned off. Dried residue can create irritation on their skin.

Have at least 3-4 towels ready to dry them off. If you are going to use a hairdryer, do not focus on one spot for too long, to avoid making one spot too hot for them.
