Why Schutzhund Dog Training

Since Schutzhund is the demonstration of the German shepherds most desirable characteristics, dogs well trained in Schutzhund are usually excellent companions in the home. The German shepherdlike any other working dog that possesses mental stabilityhas trust and confidence in itself, allowing it to be at peace with its surroundings.

A dog that performs well in Schutzhund work is obviously a very good candidate for police work. Police dogs, like other service dogs, must have temperaments with a good foundation of intelligence and utility. A minimal amount of additional training makes many well-trained Schutzhund dogs ready for active police duty. Such fearless police dogs can also work around children and in crowds without worry on the part of their handlers.

Dog training shouldnt wait until youre having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Ask The Massachusetts Breeder If Your German Shepherd Puppy Has Any Health Problems

The best way to determine whether or not a breeder is ethical and responsible is to ask if the puppies they offer for sale have any health problems. Most reputable German Shepherd Dog Breeders in Massachusetts provide you with a written health guarantee that ensures every puppy they sell will be free of genetic health issues.

If your Massachusetts German Shepherd Breeder cant provide you with this kind of document, then its probably best not to buy one of their dogs. An honest and ethical breeder should be able to prove their claims by providing you with proof that all of their dogs are free from genetic health concerns. If they cannot do this, then walk away.

Get To Know The German Shepherd Puppy

First things first, you should go to the kennel and get to know your potential future puppy. By doing this, you will see the environment where the German Shepherd is living, and you will also be able to estimate his daily routine and his relationship with the breeders, too.

Just calling or texting your breeder before you buy is simply not enough! Beware that you are welcoming a new life into your home, and that both of you will have to make certain adjustments.

Therefore, one visit to the kennel could either allow you to decide whether you should become a German Shepherd owner, or maybe wait with this decision.

This is also the perfect opportunity to ask the breeder about the dogs family, its medical history, its energy level, etc.

Look Out For The Signs Of An Unethical German Shepherd Dog Breeder In Massachusetts

Trained German Shepherd behave around farm animals

It is important to be aware of the warning signs of an unethical German Shepherd Dog Breeder in Massachusetts. Some of these signs include:

  • The breeder does not allow you to meet any past customers
  • The breeder does not have a good veterinarian that they use
  • The puppies are kept in poor conditions
  • The breeder is asking for too much money for a puppy

If you see any of these signs, it is best to walk away and find a different breeder. It is not worth it to purchase a puppy from an unethical breeder, as you will likely end up with a dog that has health problems and behaves poorly.

Which Dog Training Method Is Best

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behave as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results Im after?

Visit Your Massachusetts German Shepherd Breeder In Person

Be smart, dont buy your German Shepherd sight-unseen. If you do not want to visit the kennel in person, at least meet with the breeder of your pup face-to-face before you put any money down. Dont just chat for 5 minutes on the phone or send a few emails back and forth. Ask lots of questions so you know who your dogs parents are, what his energy level is like, if he has any health issues in his bloodlines, why the breeder is choosing to part with this particular puppy etc., etc. Spend some time getting to know the breeder through email or even by telephone but insist that you will only purchase if they would be willing to let you come and visit their facility in person.
