Where Do Black German Shepherds Come From

Kraftwerk K9 German Shepherd Black & Red Gentle Giant!

German Shepherds, like many other breeds of dog, were founded to create a better working dog. The GSDs we know and love today are the result of breeding from a number of other breeds, most notably the classic herding dog, the Berger Picard.

The first German Shepherds came about at the very tail end of the 19th century and quickly spread around the world. Theyve excelled in military careers, as service dogs, in search and rescue, and many more lines of work.

Black German Shepherds are nothing new. As long as the breed has existed, these incredible dogs have shown their impressive form beneath a fine and shiny dark coat.

Sable Vs Black German Shepherd Genes

GSDs dont carry the dominant black gene at all. Their default color is sable. Instead, black German Shepherds get their color by inheriting two copies of a different, recessive gene for eumelanin. Recessive genes need to be inherited from both mom and dad in order to be expressed. If two sable German Shepherds carrying the recessive black gene mate, approximately one quarter of their puppies will be black.

When a black German Shepherd mates with a sable dog carrying the recessive gene, the proportion of black puppies in the litter rises to around half. Only mating two black GSDs together guarantees a litter of black puppies.

But a good breeder prioritises their litters health over their color, and its often difficult to find two black German Shepherds local to one another who are unrelated enough to breed safely.

Black German Shepherds As Pets

Black long haired German Shepherds are beautiful dogs. Their striking single tone comes from a rare combination of recessive genes for the black pigment eumelanin. This sets them apart from the majority of dog breeds, who inherit a solid black coat from a simple dominant gene.

Under that coat, black German Shepherds behave just the same as the rest of their breed. To make sure your black German Shepherd gets the best start in life, find a great breeder, who can prove their breeding dogs are health tested, and unrelated.

Unlike most of the colors in the list, this color is most suited to show bloodlines, as opposed to working GSD bloodlines.

The black and red German Shepherd strongly resembles the black and tan variation.

One difference is that the tan-colored areas are replaced with reddish-brown areas. This red pigment is much stronger than the tan pigment.

These red areas sometimes appear to be lighter in color .

The black color on their fur is still the same as the other variations with a black saddle-like marking and a black mask marking.

Black German Shepherd Grooming And Shedding

The black German Shepherd dog has a double coat. This extra hair doesnt require much more effort on the grooming front, though. Twice weekly brushing of your black German Shepherd will usually suffice.

All German Shepherd dogs shed their coats quite significantly throughout the year, and blow their coat in spring and fall.

As you can imagine, an all black German Shepherd will really make an impact on your floors and furnishings as this happens! In other words, there will be plenty of hair to clear up. So make sure you keep your vacuum cleaner close at hand.

Fawn / Yellowish White / Isabella

All these terms are essentially labelling what is a black and cream German Shepherd.

Isabella types can be very light and might just be a ploy to disguise a white or even albinistic dog.

These colors are extremely unusual among German Shepherds and not commonly seen and not desirable either in most cases.

Are German Shepherds Easy To Train

Some are easy to train, while others are more moderate.

As weve seen, different lines have different temperaments. German Shepherds from working lines are typically more assertive and stronger-willed. A tougher German Shepherd will be more challenging to train unless you pay closer attention to building the right Leader-Follower relationship with the dog.

That doesnt mean softer German Shepherds are automatically easy to train. Some dogs with soft temperaments are skittish or shy, making them just as challenging as a strong-tempered dog.

In general, though, a sound-tempered German Shepherd who is a good fit for family life should be easy to train. Just establish the right Leader-Follower relationship and the dog will be happy to work with you.

German Shepherds Are Known As A Mouthy Breed

Kraftwerk K9 German Shepherd dog Very Large, black & red with a tremendous head!

They tend to use their mouths as an appendage thanks to their herding heritage. Its even right there in their name, ShepHERD. This mouthing behavior is natural, so expect your GSD to mouth you and chew anything that will fit inside their mouth. However, that doesnt mean you should allow it. What might be cute in your small puppy will get more powerful as your dog grows up. Training your dog not to bite your hand or the chew on the furniture is essential with this breed. Teach your German Shepherd to channel those instincts safely and appropriately.

This is a big dog, though, capable of mistakenly bumping a toddler or small child. True to their reserved nature, theyre not tail-wagging friendly with kids they dont know, but theyre generally trustworthy.
