How Long Do Heat Cycles Last For German Shepherds

You may have noticed a trend in this article so farheat cycles can vary widely, and size plays a pretty big role. Thats true for how long each heat cycle lasts, too.

Some dogs, often the very tiny breeds, may be in heat for only a few days. Others can be in heat for weeks on end. Shorter heat cycles of less than a week are pretty rare though.

The average heat cycle for a German Shepherd is about three weeks.

As your dog ages, her cycles may shorten or lengthen. If youre concerned, ask your vet. They may decide to check her hormone levels and do a physical to be sure nothing scary is happening.

Most likely, however, its just normal aging stuff.

Stages Of The Dog Heat Cycle

There are four stage of the dog heat cycle. These stages will vary in the changes that will happen to your furbaby’s body and behavior. The four stages are the following:

Proestrus: This is the beginning of your dogs heat period. Her body will get ready for mating and will begin to show heat signs like a swollen vulva and discharge.

Estrus: This stage is where your furbaby will begin becoming receptive to males and will approach males with her tail held to the side, getting ready for a possible breeding. Youll also notice her getting aggressive toward other female dogs.

Diestrus: This is the phase of the heat cycle in dogs where your furbaby’s body return to its normal state or develop for pregnancy.

Anestrus: Anestrus is the inactive phase of a dogs heat cycle. There will be no signs of hormonal or sexual behavior during this stage.

The heat cycle or Menstrual period in dogs is not all about Bleeding. Their body goes through a lot of chances and transformation, which breaks down into four stages. Heres a quick glimpse through them:

Proestrus stage

Proestrus is the first stage of the heat cycle which can last for a week or from 4 to 20 days.
