Are German Shepherds Considered A Dangerous Breed

Who Would Win In A Fight A Pitbull Or German Shepherd

SECRET ABOUT GERMAN SHEPHERDS – THE MOST DANGEROUS DOGS IN THE WORLD

It would be a close fight because German Shepherds have a bite force of 238 pounds of pressure measured bite force, and the American Pit Bull Terrier has a bit force of 235 pounds of pressure but most of the time a Shepherd and a pit would go strait for the throat so most likely the fist one to get a bite in would win.

Are Pit Bulls Naturally Aggressive

A dog who is aggressive towards one animal, may or may not be aggressive towards another animal it does not cross into other species, they are individual of one another. Aggression towards humans is very abnormal for pit bull type dogs. They are not naturally or inherently aggressive towards humans.

Insurance Companies’ Bad Dog Lists

In association with National Dog Bite Prevention Week a number of insurance companies have issued their lists of dog breeds that they consider dangerous and according to their rules can result in denial of coverage. These lists have various names depending on the company, such as “excluded dog breeds,” “aggressive dog list,” “insurance list of dangerous dogs,” “prohibited dog breeds,” and one simply labels it their “bad dog list.”

The dog breeds that can be found on these lists seem to be drawn from a series of research studies, such as one commissioned by the U.S. National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, published in 2000. It looked at the statistics on fatal dog bites .

However, it seems as though any dog bite incident that receives wide media coverage can also land a dog breed on such a list. Thus the Presa Canario was a dog breed that few people had heard of prior to the media coverage of a 2001 incident in San Francisco. The media luridly described how a woman was viciously mauled to death by two of these big dogs in the hallway of her apartment building. As a result, the owner of these dogs is now serving a sentence of 15 years to life in prison. Although the Presa Canario remains a rare breed in North America, it now seems to appear on every prohibited dog breed list issued by insurance companies.

Do Dog Breed Restrictions Work

Most studies agree that breed specific legislation is not actually very effective at increasing public safety against dog bites or attacks. Here are several problems associated with breed restrictions and legislation:

  • While specific breeds were bred for specific reasons , there is still something to be said for nurture over nature.
  • Just because a dog is of a certain breed does not immediately make it an aggressive attack animal. There are plenty of people who own aggressive breeds and never have an issue with their furry pal showing signs of aggression.
  • Where do mixed-breed dogs fit into this discussion? A mixed-breed dog may look like a banned breed, but it may not have the genetics of that breed.
  • Can you ban a dog based solely on its looks? This ambiguity also makes these laws very difficult to enforce.
  • There are also a lot of negative consequences associated with BSL. For example, people may abandon their dogs if theyre moving somewhere new where their dog is not allowed.
  • This increases the number of dogs in shelters or left out on the streets. People may also try to hide their dog indoors and potentially even neglect their vet care to keep their dog a secret.

Unfortunately,it seems that these laws seem to do little to improve the safety of the public, not to mention the safety of the dogs. Instead, they create a false sense ofsecurity.

10 Most Dangerous Dogs In The World

In the American Temperament Test Societys temperament test, the ten breeds listed below had some of the lowest passing rates overall. The breeds are listed in order from lowest to highest percentage of individual dogs that passed the test.

During the test, dogs with the lowest passing percentages often displayed extreme shyness, aggression, and panic.

Despite the fact that there are breeds with lower passing percentages than those in this article, I have chosen to focus on the 10 breeds most commonly ranked as highly aggressive .

In the sections below, we discuss each breed in more detail, including its overall passing rate.

How The Test Is Conducted

ATTS focuses and measures different aspects of a dogs temperament, including independence, shyness, aggression, and friendliness, in addition to its instinct to protect and/or defend its handler.

This test simulates a walk through the neighborhood where the dog is exposed to neutral, friendly, and threatening situations. The handler is approached by a series of strangers, and unexpected noises are heard from hidden locations. The test is designed to see how the dog responds to people, noises, and its surrounding environment.

Can A Pitbull Kill A German Shepherd

The pit bull is much more likely to attack your GSD than to attack you. In either case, the GSD is not likely to be able to defend itself against a pit bull. Theyre not bred for that type of scenario. GSDs can be trained to attack, and for that matter, can be trained to kill, and thats not insignificant.

Dog could be labeled as “dangerous” after saving owner from attack

The German Shepherd Pit Bull is a mixed breed doga cross between the German Shepherd Dog and American Pit Bull Terrier breeds. Medium to large in size, energetic, and loyal, these pups inherited some of the best traits from both of their parents.

The German Shepherd Pit Bull is also sometimes called the German Sheppit, German Pit, and Shepherd Pit. Despite their unfortunate status as a designer breed, you may find these pups in shelters and breed specific rescues, so remember to adopt! Dont shop!

These pups are friendly in nature when they have proper socialization training, and theyre loyal to a fault. Both parent breeds are hard working dogs. Due to their superior intelligence and athletic build they are often tasked with guarding and police work.

An apartment probably wouldnt do for these pups. German Shepherd Pit Bulls need large homes with yards to run around. If given rigorous duties, youll have one happy dog. When under-stimulated, these pups can become destructive and develop behavioral problems.

How Dangerous German Shepherds Are

When raised well, German Shepherds will normally be very protective of their family and not dangerous towards members of their family.

However, German Shepherds have been rated as being more aggressive towards other dogs and people outside of their families.

But, this study was based on survey data which may not be very reliable. Also, it found that there was a lot more variation in the dangerousness of different dogs of the same breed than there was between the different breeds themselves.

This would suggest that the way a dog is raised will have a much bigger impact on how dangerous it will be than the type of breed it is.

With that being said, German Shepherds can be very dangerous when they are not raised well towards strangers and even towards their own owners.

This study shows some of the common themes among dangerous dogs including not having positive human interaction, not being neutered and the owners being aggressive towards them.

Since German Shepherds are a large dog breed with a strong bite force, it does mean that they have the potential to be more dangerous than most other dog breeds.

This means that, before getting a German Shepherd, it is important to make sure that you will be able to spend time with it daily, that you do not intend to separate it from you or your family and that you will be able to devote time to training it regularly especially when it is a puppy.

Theyre Extremely Loyal And Protective

German Shepherds have a great personality, especially when it comes to their loyalty and protective nature. Once you build that initial loving relationship with your new German Shepherd, you can be sure that hell always have your back and protect you in the case of an intruder or an approaching stranger.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that German Shepherds are good family dogs.

If you are wondering why the German Shepherd is so loyal and protective, you only need to remember that he was originally bred for herding sheep and livestock. Its in his genes to serve and obey, hence another reason why he is used as a police dog.

How The Passing Rate Is Determined

Percentages under each breed indicate the number of dogs that passed the temperament test divided by the total number of dogs tested. Chihuahuas were tested 46 times, but 14 failed. The passing rate for Chihuahuas, therefore, is the number of dogs that passed divided by the total number of dogs tested , which is 69.9%.

Failure is determined when a dog shows any signs of the following:

  • Unprovoked aggression
  • Strong avoidance

American Staffordshire/pit Bull Terrier

Top 10 Most Dangerous Dogs Breed In The World

An American Staffordshire Terrier, also known as the American Pit Bull Terrier, is a medium-sized dog belonging to the terrier group. They usually weigh between 55 and 65 pounds.

They originated in the Staffordshire region of England, hence the name. This breed was originally bred to be used as guard dogs and for dog fighting, which meant they had to have a stockier frame. The second strain of this breed developed in America after dog fighting was banned. This new variation possessed a milder temperament and was smaller-framed. Newer strains of pit bulls called American Pit Bulls are very loyal and protective of their owners and families.

In addition to this, they are usually very patient and good with children. If you are uncertain of a pit bulls pedigree, do some background checks before you choose a pet to keep as a family pet.

What The Normal Behavior Of A German Shepherd Is

German Shepherds are widely considered as one of the most loyal dog breeds with a high drive to protect their owners and their territory when they are raised well.

They are often described as being a one-person dog because they will often become depressed when they are separated from their owners. But, they actually tend to be very loyal to their entire family and not just their primary owner so it would be more appropriate to describe them as one-family dogs.

Since German Shepherds were bred to be working dogs, they are also eager to please their owners. As a result, German Shepherds tend to respond well to training and will normally adapt to roles that they are given quickly.

They Require A Ton Of Grooming

Youll have to at least do a quick brushing on a daily basis when you own a German Shepherd. In addition to shedding year-round, they also blow their coat in the fall and spring.

That means youll have a whole lot of grooming to do when your dogs undercoat begins to shed for around two weeks. Dont worry, though, as you can find some top tips on how to reduce German Shepherd shedding to help you with this.

You will need to get a good grooming tool. I use the FURminator undercoat de-shedding tool from Amazon. This is particularly suited to German Shepherds as it easily gets through the topcoat and safely removes the loose undercoat hair.

Dont waste money on cheaper brushes, as this tool does the job. I take my GSD on the field when I FURminate her, and anyone passing would think Id been shearing a sheep!

How To Socialize A German Shepherd Puppy

As early as possible you must teach the pup that it is safe and pleasing to be around people and other animals. During these first few weeks getting your puppy used to human contact is essential. It will need to accept handling like: Petting, Grooming and Brushing, people touching its head and front limbs, being picked up without any fear reaction such as struggling or panicking accepting nail trims and teeth brushing with no resistance tolerating collar, leash and harness training allowing objects like car travel, carrying the dog like a bag across the road, etc. How will I know if my new puppy is being socialized correctly?

If your new puppy is accepting all of the above treatment without being fearful or over-excited then he will be well on the way to being a happy and confident adult dog. How do I get my German Shepherd Puppy used to these things?

The key here is patience, time and repetition. Ensure that you have plenty of treats on hand for when your puppy accepts something willingly, reward him with praise or a treat. Also ensure that whenever he is exposed to new people, animals or situations you are there to reassure him with calm words of encouragement, always ask people to talk in soft voices while they are around your pet.

Skeletal Health And Supplementation

Musculoskeletal disorders are debilitating conditions that are often associated with genetic makeup, malnutrition, and stress-related events. Some breeds like the German shepherd, are predisposed to a variety of different skeletal disorders, including but not limited to: canine hip dysplasia, Cauda equina syndrome, and osteoarthritis. These conditions can be a result of poor breeding or induced by intense exercise and poor diet.

Canine hip dysplasia is an orthopedic condition resulting from abnormal development of the hip joint and surrounding tissue causing the instability and partial dislocation of the hip joint, resulting in pain, inflammation, lameness, and potentially osteoarthritis of the joint. German shepherds are genetically predisposed to CHD and the University of Veterinary Medicine in Germany found its prevalence estimated to be approximately 35% of veterinary cases associated with the disorder.

Osteoarthritis is one of the main contributors of musculoskeletal pain and disabilities that commonly affect German shepherds. Mechanical stress, oxidative damage and inflammatory mediators combine to induce the gradual degeneration of the articular cartilage in the joint, resulting in reduced muscle mass, pain, and locomotion.

Vitamins such as A and D also have crucial roles in bone development and maintenance by regulating bone and calcium metabolism. Adequate levels should be incorporated into a German shepherd diet to promote a healthy musculoskeletal system.

Legal Challenges To Breed Specific L Egislation :

20 Most Dangerous Dogs & Breeds That Are Known for Aggression

A number of different cases have come up over the past decade attempting to fight breed restriction legislation on constitutional grounds.

However, most of these arguments eventually fail in court. Below is one prime example that went all the way to the Supreme Court.

In 2008, in the City of Toledo v. Tellings, pit bull advocates tried to argue that Toledos laws about pit bulls were unconstitutional on several grounds.

Here are a few of the arguments that were made in court against the breed specific legislation:

  • Void for Vagueness: Thepit bull advocacy group argued that the breed restriction legislation was toovague. In order to satisfy due process , a lawmust clearly explain which acts are allowed and which are prohibited. TheTellings case argued that it was too difficult to determine which dogs were pitbulls and which were not. However, the Supreme Court rejected this defense anddeclared that a pit bull can be identified by physical and behavioral traits.
  • Substantive Due Process:This means that there is a constitutional limit to the controls that thegovernment can place on its citizens. Pit bull advocates believed that a lawgoverning dogs was not rationally related to the government interest. However, the Supreme Court found that the citys goal was to protect humans from dogattacks and that regulating pit bulls was directly related to that goal becausepit bulls cause a disproportionate amount of danger to people.
