What Causes A White German Shepherd
German Shepherds with all-white coats have always been present in litters. However, now that you know they are not albinos, what exactly causes their beautiful white coats?
A recessive gene is responsible for causing a white German Shepherd and appears to have been part of the breeds original gene structure. It masks the dogs true color, making it appear white. The gene is only related to coat color and has nothing to do with health or temperament.
When studying the genetics of coat color, its difficult to predict what colors a white German Shepherd Dog would throw when bred to a non-white GSD because its unclear what color or pattern the dog is masking.
The easiest way to explain it is that the white gene is a recessive gene that works independently of all other color genes. If a dog has two copies of that gene switched on, the white hides the color. Consider a white bed sheet on a grey mattress it conceals the mattresss color rather than changing it.
So, whats the bottom line?
If the colored dog has the recessive gene, the pups would have a 50/50 probability of being white or colored. To guarantee an all-white litter, two white GSDs will need to be bred.

White German Shepherd Genetics
Our understanding of the genes which control canine coat color is increasing all the time. But even as we unravel the unique DNA of other famously white dogs , the white German Shepherd remains stubbornly mysterious.
There was a time when all white German Shepherds were thought of as albinos. Whilst the gene for albinism does exist in the GSD population, the majority of white German Shepherds dont carry it. Nor do they carry the extreme white piebald gene which gives Dalmatians their white base.
At the time of writing, in 2019, the most widely accepted theory is that German Shepherds all have one spot in their genetic code which acts like a switch for white and non-white.
If a puppy inherits the non-white gene in this location from either mom or dad, then theyll be one of the other possible German Shepherd colors, depending on the other genes they have.
But if they inherit the white gene for from both mom and dad, then all else in their genetic code is forgotten, and they are white. Because they need to inherit the white gene from both parents, it is described as a recessive trait.

White German Shepherd Breeders
As weve seen, white German Shepherds are frowned upon by purists. But their striking looks are gaining legions of fans among a new generation of GSD lovers.
Its very important when breeding puppies for a recessive trait like white fur, to resist breeding from individuals who are too closely related. But for unscrupulous breeders, this is exactly the way to get the litter they want, without travelling to reach a breeding partner who is unrelated enough.
Good breeders will:
- Provide the results of hip and elbow dysplasia exams, and well as other health tests.
- Show you the full family tree of their puppies, and their co-efficient of inbreeding.
- Invite you to meet mom with her puppies, and dad if possible.
- Offer references from the buyers of previous litters, if this isnt their first litter.

Are White German Shepherds Hypoallergenic
The white German Shepherd is double-coated, just like the colored variety, and can have medium or long hair, although long hair is less common. If you suffer from an allergy, you may wonder if they are hypoallergenic.
White German Shepherds are not hypoallergenic. They are a heavy shedder that will shed all year round consistently due to their thick double coats. They will also undergo vast seasonal shedding during the spring and fall. This constant pet dander can seriously affect an allergy sufferer.
The breed requires the same basic grooming and maintenance care as any other variety of German Shepherd. Check out my guide on German Shepherd shedding, which Im sure youll find particularly helpful.
Regular brushing of your dogs coat can help to keep the shedding to a minimum. The white hair does benefit from being easier to see on floors and furniture, which makes it a little easier!
The rarer longer-haired white German Shepherd requires more frequent and thorough grooming, especially around the ears, to ensure that they remain clean and healthy.
I recommend the FURminator Undercoat De-Shedding Tool from Amazon. I use it on my GSD as it does a great job of safely reaching the undercoat through the topcoat. Ive tried other cheaper tools but havent found one as good as this.
Obviously, white GSDs would need more baths. Hopefully, you wont have one who enjoys rolling in fox poop!

Do White German Shepherds Go Deaf
Another often asked question about the purebred white German Shepherd is whether or not the white coat causes deafness.
White German Shepherds do not go deaf due to the recessive gene that causes their white coats. This gene does not affect the dogs hearing, nor does it cause hereditary deafness. The confusion lies with the piebald gene that can cause hearing loss in some breeds, such as Dalmations.
Academic studies of the genetics of deafness in domestic pets indicate that dogs with the piebald gene are more likely to suffer from hearing loss.
Experts conclude that the same cells that generate pigments in their hair and skin also play a role in the inner ears structure. These cells are missing in dogs with the piebald or merle gene, which is why they are white and leads to their hearing loss.
White German Shepherds, on the other hand, inherit their white coats from a separate recessive gene. This means that their ears develop normally, and their hearing is unaffected.
Puppy Prices & Breeders
The cost of a German Shepherd puppy is, on average, between $1,000 and $1,500. Generally, you can expect to pay towards the higher end of the scale for White German Shepherd puppies as they are rarer. These uniquely colored pups cost upwards of $1000. This is relatively cheap for a purebred dog, however, this is down to this specific bloodline being relatively new.
Despite the controversy, if you are considering getting one of these white fluffy pups, you have the choice between a traditional German Shepherd breeder who may focus solely on the color white, or you can source your pup from a German Shepherd-specific lineage enthusiast.
The best way to ensure the health of your pup is to buy him from a reputable breeder. Regardless of their allegiance to the classic White German Shepherd, or specific lineage view of the White Shepherd, a good breeder will always introduce and show you to the parents, as well as provide you with health certificates.
If the specific shepherd lineage has piqued your interest then the American White Shepherd Association lists reputable breeders by state and should be your first port of call when looking into finding a pup of your own.

How To Find A Responsible German Shepherd Breeder In New York
When looking for a responsible German Shepherd breeder in New York, it is important to do your research. Some things you may want to ask the breeder include:
- Are the puppies parents certified free of genetic defects?
- Do the puppies have a health guarantee?
- What vaccines and deworming medications have the puppies received?
- What type of food and exercise do the puppies receive?
- Can I see the parents of the puppies?
- How often do the breeders screen for potential health problems in their breeding stock?
- Do they offer help with training or behavior issues after I take my puppy home?
If you cant find a responsible breeder in your area, consider adopting a dog from a local German Shepherd dog rescue. These organizations are full of wonderful dogs who need homes, and most of them are already housebroken and know basic obedience commands.
Registration Of The White Gsd
Many dog owners across the world like to enlist their pooch with kennel clubs for several reasons. Benefits could include gaining official certificates, eligibility to take part in competitions, and local events. Its also beneficial for achieving recognition titles such as a therapy dog, or search and rescue dog status. If registering your white German Shepherd is important to you then there are 2 ways in which you can do this.
Firstly, you can register him with the AKC as a German Shepherd. Youll register as a purebred German Shepherd that happens to be of the white color. It is important to remember that the AKC still considers the color to be a fault. Youll be disqualified from competing in conformation shows. However, he is still eligible to compete in performance-related events such as herding and obedience. Be aware though that German Shepherd fanciers prefer the traditional or darker colors of the breed. As such, its claimed that the white German Shepherds would likely be discriminated against in performance tasks.
Alternatively, you can register him with the UKC as White Shepherd. The UKC recognizes White Shepherds as a breed in their own right. As a result of this, they allow him to compete in conformation shows unimpeded. They can compete in any other event linked to this classification. However, in order to be registered as such, you must be able to prove that he is of the third generation.

Long Haired White German Shepherd
Do you think a white Shepherd is a rare sight? A long haired white German Shepherd Dog is even rarer! Long haired German Shepherds of every color owe their coats to a recessive gene for long hair.
Historically, long haired GSDs were considered a genetic fault. Long haired dogs lack a waterproof, insulating undercoat, so they were unsuitable for working. But they are famously good-tempered and devoted, so modern long haired German Shepherds of every color are gaining popularity as pets and companion dogs.

What Owners Of Our Puppies Have To Say
Got our girl home to Minnesota. Little freaked out by the snow and the zero temps. She is doing great. Ive had a lot of dogs and several white shepherds but she clearly has potential to be the best yet. She is a lovable sweetheart. Also fairly adventuresome. In and out of tight spaces outside and crawling over a pretty sizable and messy rock pile. Anyway, thank you. Tom

Are White German Shepherds Rare
The discrimination against the white German Shepherd by Nazi Germany quickly spread to breeders elsewhere. Breeders also wrongly believed they were inferior and had a genetic fault. So, in todays world, a question often asked is, how rare are white German Shepherds?
White German Shepherds are rarer than the colored variety as only two white German Shepherds are guaranteed to produce all-white puppies. However, they are not too rare, and if two non-whites both have the white recessive gene, a small percentage of the litter may be white.
A reputable and experienced breeder will confidently breed two white German Shepherds to produce a litter of purebred, fluffy white German Shepherd puppies, as long as the demand is there.
